This study examined patterns of engaging in "reading in connection to writing" (hereafter reading-writing practices) in the context of two ESL college composition classrooms. The purpose of this study was to explore whether the L2 proficiency level could be a key construct in explaining similarities and differences in reading-writing practices which students engaged in during the composing process. Multiple sources of data collected over the semester included interview protocols, written products, and observational notes. The results showed that the three proficiency groups under examination differed widely in the ways reading was connected to writing and in the types of intermediate texts produced during the composing process. The students in the high proficiency group produced more intermediate texts through an engagement in reading-writing practices connected to each other. On the contrary, the students in lower proficiency groups engaged in a limited range of reading-writing practices without support of intermediate texts. This study provides insight into the different ways ESL college students coordinate reading and writing while composing essays.

The Purpose of this study is to examine the effects of the Smart reading program, Smartree, in an elementary English class. Recently in Korea, the use of smart technologies in education has become an issue with the introduction of a new educational platform and increased social interaction between teachers and students. The Smart learning paradigm is converging with technology and social learning. This study examines an English reading method using smart technology and how it affects the improvement of elementary students' reading ability, we also suggest effective reading methods related to Smart learning suitable for this new educational trend. The results showed that the use of a tablet PC based Smartree reading program had meaningful effects on both improvements of cognitive reading ability and changes in affective attitude.

This paper examines Korean EFL high school students' reader responses on an expository text and a narrative text with the same topic. The purpose of the study is to investigate whether they have different reading models depending on the two genres and whether there are any differences depending on the learners' proficiency levels. The analysis focuses on textual, critical, and aesthetic reading models in the reader responses written in English by science-gifted high school students (N=30). The results show that the participants have different reading models in reading an expository text and a narrative text. They tend to read the expository text in a more critical way while reading the narrative text in a more personal and emotional way. Moreover, regardless of the proficiency levels, they wrote longer responses on the narrative text than the expository text. However, the proficiency level of English does not support any significant differences in the types of reading models. The findings provide Korean EFL high school students' characteristics in L2 reading and suggest the pedagogical implication to pursue linguistic development as well as reading for pleasure.

The purpose of this study is to identify the main subjects of the reading programs which are provided by the public libraries during september, "the reading month," in 7 metropolitan cities, Seoul, Pusan, Daegu, Incheon, Daejeon, Gwangju, and Ulsan. To achieve this purpose, the data are collected from 622 programs of the sixty-two libraries. The content analysis method was used to analyze data and find results from it. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Reading and culture are identified as the main subjects of the programs. 2. The preferred subjects among the public libraries in 7 metropolitan cities are identified as different.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze and look for improvement points of the ordinance for school libraries and reading education in Korea. For the purpose, the writer analyzed 15 ordinances of metropolitan city and provincial offices of eduction. The ordinance content were examined in terms of obligation of superintendents of education and principals, committees and administration department, reading promotion and education, and school libraries. According to the examination the writer discussed about effectiveness enhancement, operating integrated type ordinance, connections of school libraries and reading education and curriculum, and reflection of information literacy education.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of Reading Promotion Program of Public Library on Reading Activity. For this purpose, this study carried out carried out literature review, readingmarathon program development and operation. It was followed by the questionnaire survey and interview about reading activity of readingmarathon program participants. The findings are as follows 1) People of high satisfaction increased reading volume and frequency of library use 2) Book talk with family members increased after participating in readingmarathon program. The readingmarathon program had a positive effect on reading activity.

The Purpose of this study is to investigate how the different types of reading method of contrary concept : between "oral reading" and "silent reading", between "intensive reading" and "extensive reading", between "thorough reading", "selective reading", influence on the tendency of the creative ability and the self-directed learning ability. This study was collected using 2 classes of 6th-grade 62 children of an elementary school. The influences according to reading methods on creative ability and the self-directed teaming ability analysis were as follows : "Oral reading" more than "silent reading", "intensive reading" more than "extensive reading" had a significant influence on the creative ability and the self-directed learning ability. Out of reading methods, "selective reading" and "thorough reading" had no significant influence, or had negative factors on the creative ability and the self-directed learning ability.

The purpose of this study is to investigate on the effect of the elderly reading education activity for the children in local child care center. For this study, the data was collected, based on questionnaires by children who participated in the elderly reading assistant education activity program in 14 local child centers. And The study employs a survey observation of reading guidance lesson and individual interviews with the workers at the local child care center. As a result, this shows that the elderly reading guidance activity effects on draws children' interest in reading effectively, and that the workers' opinions about the elderly reading education activity are positive.

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between reading attitude, reading amount, and personality type of college students, and to prepare a plan to improve the reading rate. As a result of the study, Reading attitudes have been shown to affect reading volume, paper book reading amount, personal reading amount, and e-book reading amount. In the personality type, openness has had a positive impact on reading and reading attitudes. On the other hand, the attention was negatively affecting the reading amount and the reading attitude, except for the amount of e-book reading. The implications derived from this are as follows. First, college students need a library environment and a library environment that can read books that can read books. Second, in order to increase the reading amount of extraversion, it is necessary to conduct dynamic reading activities in the center of the activity and conduct a local reading club activity linked to community activities.

The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate a parent-child reading interaction program. Based on the importance of the parent-child relationship and the home literacy environment vis-a-vis the extent to which reading is encouraged, and with regard to the existing empirical research in this field, a five-session parent-child reading interaction program has been developed, targeting 18 parents with children enrolled in th lower grades of elementary school. The effectiveness of this program has been evaluated by a pretest and post test and then analyzed by a paired t-test. The findings are as follows: 1) Following the implementation of this program, there were improvements in scores related to the home literacy environment, the encouragement of reading, and the attitude of the child toward reading. 2) In addition, there was an increase in the level of the mother's "rational guidance" parenting while tendencies toward overprotective and hostile parenting traits declined. The importance of the parent-child relationship and home literacy environment concerning reading guidance was discussed.
