  • This study's purpose was to provide basic data for the monitoring of ecological changes caused by change of vegetation structure of Abies koreana forest in a study site susceptible to climatic change in Yeongsil area of Hallasan Mountain, Jeju Island. Surveys revealed this: in Yeongsil area of Hallasan Mountain, per 1 ha of A. koreana forests, total number 1,781, and A. koreana number 989, accounting for 55.5% of the total number of trees. 190 A. koreana or 19.2% were found to be dead. For the number of individual trees by DBH, trees standing 5 cm - 10 cm tall formed the largest portion at 39.9%, and in the case of other trees except A. koreana, the number of individual trees below 5 cm accounted for 23.5% of the total number of trees. The survey of importance by height revealed this: at the top level, the importance of A. koreana was the highest at 106.23, but the sum of importance of temperate deciduous broad-leaved trees (Prunus maximowiczii, Quercus mongolica, and Taxus cuspidata) was higher at 142.84 than that of A. koreana. The analysis of species diversity revealed 0.645 species diversity for the tree layer and 0.817 for the shrub layer; for evenness, 0.549 for the tree layer and 0.664 for the shrub layer; for dominance value; 0.451 for the tree layer and 0.336 for the shrub layer. The analysis of tree vitality revealed that for the A. koreana forests in Yeongsil, the composition ratio of A. koreana by type is AS type>AL type>DS type>DB type, and that of the other trees is AL type>AS type>AF type>AB type. Compared with the forests in other areas, the A. koreana forests in the Yeongsil area have a very high occurrence rate of dead trees, and a high importance of trees is shown in the deciduous broad-leaved tree forests. Compared with the A. koreana forests in the Jindallaebat area, with the same level above sea, the vegetation structures are fast changing. Also, due to dryness and other non-physical environmental changes caused by a lack of rainwater and dry winds in winter, dead trees are fast increasing in number. Environmental changes such as climate change diversely affect the maintenance of A. koreana in individual areas, and if environmental changes are fast and continue long, of the A. koreana forest areas in the Hallasan Mountain, the A. koreana forests in the Yeongsil area will decrease fastest in number and will experience changes in the vegetation structure. Thus, it is necessary to survey the vegetation changes in A. koreana forests, which are distributed in all directions but are centered on Hallasan Mountain, and to thus conduct long-term monitoring and research.

  • Experiments of shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interaction were conducted by using a supersonic wind tunnel. Nominal Mach number was varied in the range of 1.6 to 3.0 by means of different nozzles. The objective of the present study is to investigate the effects of boundary layer flow bleed on the interaction flow field in a straight tube. Two-dimensional slits were installed on the tube walls to bleed the turbulent boundary layer flows. The bleed flows were measured by an orifice. The ratio of the bleed mass flow to main mass flow was controlled within the range of 11 per cent. The wall pressures were measured by the flush mounted transducers and Schlieren optical observations were made for almost all of the experiments. The results show that the boundary layer flow bleed reduces the multiple shock waves to a strong normal shock wave. For the design Mach number of 1.6, it was found that the normal shock wave at the position of the silt was resulted from the main flow choking due to the suction of the boundary layer flow.

  • Spherical space frame structure with triangular network pattern, which has the various characteristics for the mechanic property, a funtional property, an aesthetic property and so on, has often been used as one of the most efficient space structures. It is expected that this type will be used widely in large-span structural roofs. But because this structure is made of network by combination of line elements there me many nodes therefore, the structure behavior is very complicated and there can be an overall collapse of structure by buckling phenomenon if the external force reaches a limitation. This kind of buckling is due to geometric shape, network pattern, the number of layer and so on, of structure. Therefore spherical space frame with triangle network pattern have attracted many designers and researchers attention all over the world. The number of layer of space frame is divided in to the simgle, double, multi layer. That is important element which is considered deeply in the beginning of structural design. The buckling characteristics of single-layer model and double-layer model for the spherical space frame structure with triangular network pattern are evaluated and the buckling loads of these types are compared with investigation their structural efficiency in this study.

  • This paper proposes a micro gas sensor for measuring $H_2S$ gas. This is based on a $SnO_2$-CuO multi-layer thin film. The sensor has a silicon diaphragm, micro heater, and sensing layers. The micro heater is embedded in the sensing layer in order to increase the temperature to an operating temperature. The $SnO_2$-CuO multi layer film is prepared by the alternating deposition method and thermal oxidation which uses an electron beam evaporator and a thermal furnace. To determine the effect of the number of layers, five sets of films are prepared, each with different number of layers. The sensitivities are measured by applying $H_2S$ gas. It has a concentration of 1 ppm at an operating temperature of $270^{\circ}C$. At the same total thickness, the sensitivity of the sensor with multi sensing layers was improved, compared to the sensor with one sensing layer. The sensitivity of the sensor with five layers to 1 ppm of $H_2S$ gas is approximately 68%. This is approximately 12% more than that of a sensor with one-layer.

  • Direct numerical simulation (DNS) of a turbulent boundary layer with moderate Reynolds number was performed to scrutinize streamwise-coherence of hairpin packet motions. The Reynolds number based on the momentum thickness (${\theta}_{in}$) and free-stream velocity (U${\infty}$) was varied in the range $Re_{\theta}$=1410${\sim}$2540 which was higher than the previous numerical simulations in the turbulent boundary layer. In order to include the groups of hairpin packets existing in the outer layer, large computational domain was used (more than 50${\delta}_o$, where ${\theta}_o$ is the boundary layer thickness at the inlet in the streamwise domain). Characteristics of packet motions were investigated by using instantaneous flow fields, two-point correlation and conditional average flow fields in xy-plane. The present results showed that a train of hairpin packet motions was propagating coherently along the downstream and these structures induced the very large-scale motions in the turbulent boundary layer.

  • The present study was performed to investigate whether Achyranthes Radix extracts play roles in the bone metabolism. Three kinds of Achyranthes Radix extracts (methylene chloride (MC), ethylacetate (Ea), and water (W)) were used for bioassay. We examined cellular activities of osteoblasts by measurement of cell proliferation rate, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, and calcified nodule formation. Osteoclast generation was assayed by measuring the number of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) (+) multinucleated cells after culture of osteoclast precursor cells. There was a maximum 20% increase in proliferation rate of osteoblastic cells after treatment with MC. First and second subfraction of MC layer increased proliferation of osteoblast. Ea layer and second subfraction of MC layer increased ALP activity. Also MC layer and second subfraction of MC layer from Achyranthes Radix extracts increased the calcified nodule. MC layer and second subfraction of MC layer from Achyranthes Radix extracts significantly decreased in the number of TRAP (+) multinucleated cells. Taken together, Achyranthes Radix stimulates the proliferation and bioactivities of bone-forming osteoblasts, and inhibits activities of bone-resorbing osteoclasts.

  • The Karman boundary-layer has been numerically investigated for the disturbance wave number, wave velocity, azimuth angle and radius (Reynolds number, Re). The disturbed flow over rotating disk can lead to transition at a much lower Re than that of the well-known Type I instability. This early transition is due to the excitation of the Type II. Presented are the neutral stability results concerning these instabilities by solving newly formulated stability equations with consideration of whole convective terms. When the present numerical results are compared with the previously known results, the value of critical Re corresponding to Type I is moved from ${Re}_{c.1}$=285.3 to 270.2 and the value corresponding to Type II from ${Re}_{c.2}$=69.4 to 36.9, respectively. Also, the corresponding wave number is moved fro)m $k_1$=0.378 to 0.386 for Type I; from $k_2$=0.279 to 0.385 for Type II. For Type II, the upped limit of wave number and azimuth angle is $k_u$=0.5872, $\varepsilon_u$=$-17.5^{\circ}$, while its lower limit is near $k_u$=0, $\varepsilon_u$=$-28.4^{\circ}$. This implies that the disturbances will be relatively fast amplified at small Re and within narrow bands of wave number compared with the previous results.

  • A great number of experimental data indicating shock-induced separation(SIS) in internal or external supersonic flows were reviewed to make clear the mechanism of SIS and to present the criterion of turbulent boundary layer separation. The interesting conclusions were obtained for the considerably wide range of flow geometries that the incipient separation is almost independent of the flow geometries, and that it is relatively unaffected by changes in gas specific heat, and boundary layer Reynolds number, Furthermore, the pressure rise necessary to separate boundary layer in external flows was found to be applicable to SIS in overexpanded propulsion nozzles. This is due to the fact that the SIS phenomenon caused by the interaction between shock waves and turbulent boundary layers is processed through a supersonic deceleration. This is, the SIS in almost all of interacting flow fields is governed by the concept of free interaction, and criterion of SIS is only a Function of upstream Mach number.

  • A numerical analysis is carried out for the marine propellers in open water conditions to investigate the effect of the wall treatments in model and full scale. The standard wall function to apply the low of the wall and the two layer zonal model to calculate the whole boundary layer for a transition phenomenon are used with one turbulence model. To determine an appropriate distance of the first grid point from the wall when using the wall function, a formula based on Reynolds number is suggested, which can estimate the maximum y+ satisfying the logarithmic law. In the model scale, it is confirmed that a transition calculation is required for a model scale propeller with low Reynolds number that the transient region appears widely. While in the full scale, the wall function calculation is recommended for efficient calculations due to the turbulence dominant flow for large Reynolds number.
