  • Carbon-based doping to MgB2 superconductor is the simplest approach to enhance the critical current densities under magnetic fields. Carbon quantum dots is synthesized in this work as a carbon provider to MgB2 superconductors. Polyvinyl Pyrrolidone is pyrolyzed and dispersed in dimethylfomamide solvent as a dopant to the mixture of Mg and B powders. Doped MgB2 bulk samples clearly show the decrease of a-axis lattice constant, grain refinements, and broadening of FWHM of diffraction peaks compared to un-doped MgB2 possibly due to the carbon substitution and/or boron vacancy at the boron site in MgB2 lattice. Also, high-field Jc for the doped MgB2 is enhanced significantly with the crossover about 3 T at 5 & 20 K when increasing the doping of carbon quantum dots.

  • Indium phosphide (InP) quantum dots (QDs) are considered alternatives to Cd-containing QDs for application in light-emitting devices. The multishell coating with ZnSe/ZnS was shown to improve the photoluminescence quantum yield (QY) of InP QDs more strongly than the conventional ZnS shell coating. Structural proof for this system was provided by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. QY values in the range of 50-70% along with peak widths of 45-50 nm can be routinely achieved, making the optical performance of InP/ZnSe/ZnS QDs comparable to that of Cd-based QDs. The fabrication of a working electroluminescent light-emitting device employing the reported material demonstrated the feasibility of the desired application.

  • We have studied the carrier relaxation of InAs/GaAs modulation-doped quantum dots depending on the excitation wavelength and modulation-doping concentration by using the time-ressolved spectroscopy. At the excitation below GaAs barrier band gap, the relaxation processes become very slow, implying to observe the phonon bottleneck effects. On the other hand, at the excitation far above GaAs band gap, phonon bottleneck effects are broken down due to Auger processes. Increasing modulation-doping concentration, the relaxation times, by virtue of Coulomb scattering between electrons in GaAs doped layer and carriers in InAs quantum dots, are observed to become fast.

  • Self-assembled InAs quantum dots (QDs) embedded in an InAlGaAs matrix were grown on an InP (001) using a solid-source molecular beam epitaxy and investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. TEM images indicated that the QD formation was strongly dependent on the growth behaviors of group III elements during the deposition of InAlGaAs barriers. We achieved a lasing operation of around 1.5 ${\mu}m$ at room temperature from uncoated QD lasers based on the InAlGaAs-InAlAs material system on the InP (001). The lasing wavelengths of the ridge-waveguide QD lasers were also dependent upon the cavity lengths due mainly to the gain required for the lasing operation.

  • A new method for the determination of josamycin has been developed based on quenching of the fluorescence of 3-mercaptopropionic acid-capped CdTe quantum dots (MPA-CdTe QDs) by josamycin in ethanol. Reaction time, interfering substances on the fluorescence quenching, and mechanism of the interaction of CdTe QDs with josamycin were investigated. Under optimum conditions, the relative fluorescence intensity was linearly proportional to the concentration of josamycin between 12.0 and 120.0 ${\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$ with a correlation coefficient of 0.9956 and a detection limit of 2.5 ${\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$. The proposed method was successfully applied to commercial tablets, and the results were satisfactory, i.e. consistent with those of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

  • Vertically coupled low density InGaAs quantum dots (QDs) buried in GaAs matrix were grown with migration enhanced molecular beam epitaxy method as a candidate for quantum information processing devices. We performed excitation power-dependent photoluminescence measurements at cryogenic temperature to analyze the effects of vertical coupling according to the variation in thickness of spacer layer. The more intense coupling effects were observed with the thinner spacer layer, which modified emission properties of QDs significantly. The low surface density of QDs was observed by atomic force microscopy, and scanning transmission electron microscopy verified the successful vertical coupling between low density QDs.

  • The development of quantum dots (QDs) has had a significant impact on various applications, such as solar cells, field-effect transistors, and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Through successful engineering of the core/shell heterostructure of QDs, their photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield (QY) and stability have been dramatically enhanced. Such high-quality QDs have been regarded as key fluorescent materials in realizing next-generation display devices. Particularly, electrically driven (or electroluminescent, EL) QD light-emitting diodes (QLED) have been highlighted as an alternative to organic light-emitting diodes (OLED), mostly owing to their unbeatably high color purity. Structural optimizations in QD material as well as QLED architecture have led to substantial improvements of device performance, especially during the past decade. In this review article, we discuss QDs with various semiconductor compositions and describe the mechanisms behind the operation of QDs and QLEDs and the primary strategies for improving their PL and EL performances.

  • Nanofabrication with finely focused ion and electron beams is reviewed, and position and size controlled fabrication of nano-metals and -semiconductors is demonstrated. A focused ion beam (FIB) interface attached to a column of 200keV transmission electron microscope (TEM) was developed. Parallel lines and dots arrays were patterned on GaAs, Si and $SiO_2$ substrates with a 25keV $Ga^+-FIB$ of 200nm beam diameter at room temperature. FIB nanofabrication to semiconductor specimens caused amorphization and Ga injection. For the electron beam induced chemical vapor deposition (EBI-CVD), we have discovered that nano-metal dots are formed depending upon the beam diameter and the exposure time when decomposable gases such as $W(CO)_6$ were introduced at the beam irradiated areas. The diameter of the dots was reduced to less than 2.0nm with the UHV-FE-TEM, while those were limited to about 15nm in diameter with the FE-SEM. Self-standing 3D nanostructures were also successfully fabricated.

  • In recent years, spins of confined carriers in quantum dots are promising candidates for the logical units in quantum computers. In many concepts developed so far, the individual spin q-bits are being manipulated by magnetic fields, which is difficult to achieve. In the current research the recent developments of spin based quantum computing has been reviewed. Then, Single-hole spin in a molecular quantum dots with less energy and more speed has been electrically manipulated and the results have been compared with the magnetic manipulating of the spin.

  • In this study, we report the doping effect of graphene quantum dots (QDs) in nematic liquid crystal (NLC) system on rubbed polyimide (PI) surface. The good LC alignment and high thermal stability in QD-LC cell system on rubbed PI surfaces can be measured. Also, the low threshold voltage of QD-TN cell was observed about 2.77 V. The fast response time of 13.2 ms for QD-TN cell can be achieved. Finally, the good voltage holding ratio of QD-TN cell on rubbed PI surface was measured.
