  • In the present paper the effects of combined heat and mass transfer on the fin efficiency were calculated. Sector method was used for calculating the fin efficiency of the continuous fin. The parameter Lewis No. and C which describe the combined heat and mass transfer is derived by using the heat and mass transfer analogy and effects of Lewis No. and C on the fin efficiencies were calculated.

  • In this paper we used Support Vector Machines(SVMs) recently proposed as the loaming method, one of Artificial Neural Network, to divide continuous speech into phonemes, an initial, medial, and final sound, and then, performed continuous speech recognition from it. Decision boundary of phoneme is determined by algorithm with maximum frequency in a short interval. Recognition process is performed by Continuous Hidden Markov Model(CHMM), and we compared it with another phoneme divided by eye-measurement. From experiment we confirmed that the method, SVMs, we proposed is more effective in an initial sound than Gaussian Mixture Models(GMMs).

  • This paper presents matrix inequality conditions for H$_2$optimal control of linear time-invariant descriptor systems in continuous and discrete time cases, respectively. First, the necessary and sufficient condition for H$_2$control and H$_2$controller design method are expressed in terms of LMls(linear matrix inequalities) with no equality constraints in continuous time case. Next, the sufficient condition for H$_2$control and H$_2$controller design method are proposed by matrix inequality approach in discrete time case. A numerical example is given in each case.

  • In this study, a method for measuring the jitter component in continuous speech is presented. In the conventional jitter measurement method, pitch variabilities are commonly measured from the sustained vowels. In the case of continuous speech, such as a spoken sentence, distortion occurs with the existing measurement method owing to the influence of prosody information according to the sentence. Therefore, we propose a method to reduce the pitch fluctuations of prosody information in continuous speech. To remove this pitch fluctuation component, a curve representing the fluctuation is obtained via polynomial interpolation for the pitch track in the analysis interval, and the shift is removed according to the curve. Subsequently, the variability of the pitch frequency is obtained by a method of measuring jitter from the trajectory of the pitch from which the shift is removed. To measure the effects of the proposed method, parameter values before and after the operations are compared using samples from the Kay Pentax MEEI database. The statistical analysis of the experimental results showed that jitter components from the continuous speech can be measured effectively by proposed method and the values are comparable to the parameters of sustained vowel from the same speaker.

  • This paper focuses on the applicability of a continuous monitoring method on trace sulfur compounds in the ambient air by TD and GC/PFPD. The target compounds for monitoring include H2S(hydrogen sulfide), Methyl mercaptan, Dimethyl Sulfide, and Dimethyl disulfide. The result of QA/QC on monitoring instruments satisfies all the standards of Odor Measurement and Analysis Method, showing that the reproductivity of the compounds by concentration is within 10%, linearity is above 0.98 of a correlation efficient, method detection limit is 0.16 ppb by MM standard, and recovery rate is over 70%. Monitoring was conducted for two years from March 2006 to February 2008. As a result of the monitoring, the average concentration of H2S was 0.08 ppb, with the maximum concentration at 16.15 ppb. The result indicates that it is reasonable to do continuous monitoring as there appears a spontaneous event of high concentration by the condition of the site during monitoring odor-causing substances. Therefore, it is suggested that the continuous monitoring method used in this paper is appropriate to identify the characteristics of sudden occurrence and concentration variations of sulfur compounds.

  • A hybrid bridge deck is proposed, which includes steel bars, concrete and glass-fiber-reinforced-polymer (GFRP) plates with channel sections. The steel bar in the negative moment region can increase the flexural stiffness, improve the ductility, and reduce the GFRP ratio. Three continuous decks with different steel bar ratios and a simply supported deck were fabricated and tested to study the mechanical performance. The failure mode, deflection, strain distribution, cracks and support reaction were tested and discussed. The steel bar improves the mechanical performance of continuous decks, and a theoretical method is proposed to predict the deformation and the shear capacity. The experimental results show that all specimens failed with shear failure in the positive moment region. The increase of steel bar ratio in the negative moment region can achieve an enhancement in the flexural stiffness and reduce the deflection without increasing GFRP. Moreover, the continuous deck can achieve a yield load, and the negative moment can be carried by GFRP plates after the steel bar yields. Finally, a nonlinear analytical method for the deflection calculation was proposed and verified, with considering the moment redistribution, non-cracked sections and nonlinearity of material. In addition, a simplified calculation method was proposed to predict the shear capacity of GFRP-concrete decks.

  • This paper presents the continuous hoop reinforcement method as a means to overcome the difficulty of rebar construction due to the seismic detail of lateral reinforcement. Because the continuous hoop has no seismic hook, and there is less interference during the rebar work, rebar quantities and construction time can be reduced. Since the details of column and beam continuous hoops are different from those of conventional lateral reinforcements, the construction method should be developed through mock-up tests. The length of the beam mock-up is 8m and the section size is $500mm{\times}700mm$, the height of the column mock-up is 2.8m and 4m, and the section size is $800{\times}800mm$. The length and the size are determined based on the elements that are generally used in reinforced concrete basement parking lots and office buildings. The results of the mock-up test showed that the quantities of rebar could be reduced by 20% and the time could be reduced by up to 40% compared with conventional lateral reinforcements.

  • In this paper, we propose the fast and efficient detection method using the continuous measurement technique for the gamma-ray signal acquisition. This method is improved than the conventional method for the getting information of the radiation distribution. First, we implement the stereo radiation detection system using gamma-ray sensors and the motion controller. We apply continuous measurement technique to the gamma-ray detector and conduct gamma-ray irradiation test for the comparison of detection techniques. The results show that the continuous measurement technique has the high efficient performance than the conventional method.

  • In conventional small signal stability analysis, the system is assumed to be invariant and the state space equations are used to calculate the eigenvalues of the state matrix. However, when a system contains switching elements such as FACTS equipments, it becomes a non-continuous system. In this case, a mathematically rigorous approach to system small signal stability analysis is performed by means of eigenvalue analysis of the system's periodic transition matrix based on the discrete system analysis method. In this paper, the RCF (Resistive Companion Form) method is used to analyze the small signal stability of a non-continuous system including switching elements. Applying the RCF method to the differential and integral equations of the power system, generator, controllers and FACTS equipments including switching devices should be modeled in the form of state transition equations. From this state transition matrix, eigenvalues that are mapped into unit circles can be computed precisely.
