  • Farmers' perception on actual raising conditions and breeding improvement for Hanwoo were surveyed and analyzed in order to utilize such data as basic resources for further development of courses of Hanwoo improvement and instructions on raising techniques. The survey was held based on Hanwoo farmers in Gyeongbuk region and the results for the analysis were as follow. Candidate cattle for breeding was selected in consideration of 'appearance, body shape, and pedigree-registration' (39.0%) and 'artificial insemination' (38.6%) was the most frequently used breeding method for the breeding cattle. 'Body length' was revealed to be the most considered factor while purchasing fattening calves and the castration for the fattening calves were mostly performed when '6~7 months after the birth'. The farmers also responded that they 'try to comply with over 80% of items specified in program for production of high quality beef' in order to produce high quality beef. However, the farmers believed that '12 months after the birth' was the most economic market month. Although the results differed by each items surveyed, majority of those results showed statistically significant differences with significance level of 0.05 upon the surveyees' general characteristics and demographic factors including level of education, age, occupation, and family man power. Most surveyees responded 'around 30% of shipping heads' (22.1%) for the prevalence of beef graded better than 1++ grade when shipping, however, no significant differences in between general characteristics of surveyees were observed.

  • This study aimed to investigate the relationship between sleep duration and periodontitis in adult Korean women. This cross-sectional study was based on the 2014 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHNES). We selected the data from 3,292 women (over 19 years of age) out of 7,550 participants for analysis, after excluding data from men. Complex logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the effect of sleep duration on the risk of periodontitis; the crude and adjusted odds ratios (ORs) were calculated. The risk of periodontitis was higher in participants who had a sleep duration of 7 hours or more, than in those with less than 7 hours (crude OR) by 1.37 times (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.13~1.65). The adjusted OR of the participants after adjusting for the sample characteristics of the participants (age, education level, income level, diabetes, hypertension, obesity) was 1.04 times (95% CI, 0.82~1.32), but the risk for periodontitis was slightly higher, though not statistically significant. This study confirmed the relationship between sleep duration and the risk of periodontitis in Korean women. Therefore, it is necessary to develop and implement a comprehensive health promotion program that can improve the proper sleeping habits of adult women in Korea and to combine oral hygiene management programs to prevent periodontal disease.

This study investigated types of ways that the elderly at individual level are aware of social capital and the characteristic. In addition, factors that influence the types were studied. Data from 1060 elderly with the age of 65 and older were collected in Korea. Excluding missing data on variables used in the study, data of 960 elderly were used for analyses. K-mean cluster analysis was conducted to investigate types of elderly awareness on social capital at individual level. Multinominal logistic regression was used to find out factors of the types. K-mean cluster analysis resulted in three types of awareness on social capital among the elderly: (1) potential of social capital; (2) severance of social capital; and (3) wealth of social capital. Multinominal logistic regression resulted in that compared to potential of social capital type, when the elderly were younger, inclination of politics was more progressive, they did not have religion, they did not reside in rural, and they did not live in multiplex housing, the elderly were more likely to be in severance of social capital type. Also, when the elderly were women, had higher education and standard of living, were Christian, and did not reside in rural regions. they tended to be in wealth of social capital type. Based on the study results about awareness on social capital among the elderly and factors related to the awareness types, practical and political suggestions that promote social capital to solve problems of the elderly were provided.

  • This study examined the moderating effect self-rated health has on the association between grandparenting and depressive symptoms. The fourth wave (in 2012) of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (KLoSA) was used for the analyses (N=650). The Coarsened Exact Matching (CEM) method was applied in order to ensure randomness in the selection of grandparents who participated in grandparenting and those who did not. The dependent variable was depressive symptoms, the independent variable was grandparenting, and the moderating variable was self-rated health. Control variables were education level, age, household income, gender, marital status and life satisfaction. After matching data by CEM, weighted multiple regression was applied with STATA 13.0. Also, simple slope analysis and region of significance were performed to interpret the interaction terms. The results showed that self-rated health had a significant moderating effect. Specifically, for grandparents with high self-rated health, grandparenting was associated with a lower level of depressive symptoms. On the contrary, for grandparents with low self-rated health, there was no difference depending on whether they participated in raising grandchildren. Based on these results, we discussed the need for consideration of self-rated health for grandparents who participated in grandparenting.

  • Purpose To survey the perception, knowledge, wishes, and expectations of Korean radiology residents regarding artificial intelligence (AI) in radiology. Materials and Methods From June 4th to 7th, 2019, questionnaires comprising 19 questions related to AI were distributed to 113 radiology residents. Results were analyzed based on factors such as the year of residency and location and number of beds of the hospital. Results A total of 101 (89.4%) residents filled out the questionnaire. Fifty (49.5%) respondents had studied AI harder than the average while 68 (67.3%) had a similar or higher understanding of AI than the average. In addition, the self-evaluation and knowledge level of AI were significantly higher for radiology residents at hospitals located in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do compared to radiology residents at hospitals located in other regions. Furthermore, the self-evaluation and knowledge level of AI were significantly lower in junior residents than in residents in the 4th year of training. Of the 101 respondents, only 16 (15.8%) had experiences in AI-related study while 91 (90%) were willing to participate in AI-related study in the future. Conclusion Organizational efforts through a radiology society would be needed to meet the need of radiology trainees for AI education and to promote the role of radiologists more adequately in the era of medical AI.
