This paper aims to analyze the influences of the socio-cultural environment on discourse in translation. To illustrate a deep connection between discourses and societies in which they were produced, communicative patterns of high- and low-context cultures are examined. Though the original version of the translated text comes from a different culture, the translation reflects communicative preferences of the target culture. To uncover some of these preferences, a comparative study of two translations from Russian into English and from English into Russian is conducted. This study, together with further investigation of some more recent translations into Russian, revealed a number of choices affected by translators' cultural background (for example, making the translation more emotionally charged) and current ideological preferences in the society (excessive use of anglicisms).

Text, as one of the most influential inventions of humanity, has played an important role in human life since ancient times. The rich and precise information embodied in text is very useful in a wide range of vision-based applications such as the text data extracted from images that can provide information for automatic annotation, indexing, language translation, and the assistance systems for impaired persons. Therefore, natural-scene text detection with active research topics regarding computer vision and document analysis is very important. Previous methods have poor performances due to numerous false-positive and true-negative regions. In this paper, a fully-convolutional-network (FCN)-based method that uses supervised architecture is used to localize textual regions. The model was trained directly using images wherein pixel values were used as inputs and binary ground truth was used as label. The method was evaluated using ICDAR-2013 dataset and proved to be comparable to other feature-based methods. It could expedite research on text detection using deep-learning based approach in the future.

Pre-retrieval query formulation is an important step for identifying local text reuse. Local reuse with high obfuscation, paraphrasing, and translation poses a challenge of finding the reused text in a document. In this paper, three pre-retrieval query formulation strategies for heuristic retrieval in case of low obfuscated, high obfuscated, and translated text are studied. The strategies used are (a) Query formulation using proper nouns; (b) Query formulation using unique words (Hapax); and (c) Query formulation using most frequent words. Whereas in case of low and high obfuscation and simulated paraphrasing, keywords with Hapax proved to be slightly more efficient, initial results indicate that the simple strategy of query formulation using proper nouns gives promising results and may prove better in reducing the size of the corpus for post processing, for identifying local text reuse in case of obfuscated and translated text reuse.

이 논문은 한국고전문학의 영역(英譯)에 대해 논의한 것이다. 영역(英譯)에 대한 논의 범주를 소설에서 확장하여 인물전 작품의 영역(英譯) 양상과 번역 태도를 살피고자 하였다. 논의 대상으로 삼고 있는 "The Classical Novels of Korea"는 한국문화예술진흥원에서 발행한 한국문화예술에 대한 소개 시리즈 총서의 두 번째 책이다. 이 책에 5개의 작품이 영역되어 있는 데 그 가운데 이인전류 <장생전>, <검승전>, <오대검협전>을 논의하였다. 이들의 영역(英譯)은 번역 과정에서 나타나는 일반적 양상과 동일하였다. 생략과 첨가, 의역과 오역 현상이 나타났다. 보다 주목할 점은 이인전에 대한 번역 태도에 있다. 사건의 나열과 포폄의식으로 특징지어지는 전의 양식적 특징은 약화되고 이야기성이 강화되는 방향에서 서사성이 원텍스트 보다 더욱 강화되는 양상을 보였다. 이는 한국문학에 대한 흥미와 관심을 유발하고자 하는 "The Classical Novels of Korea"의 번역 목적에는 부합하는 것이다. 다만, 학습 및 연구 목적을 두고 이인전류가 영역(英譯)될 때는 전(傳)의 양식적 특징과 주제의식이 드러날 수 있도록 되어야 할 것이다.

본 논문은 RBMT, SMT, PBMT를 활용한 직렬 연결 방식의 하이브리드 번역 시스템을 제안한다. 번역 시스템은 입력된 문장에 대하여 구문 분석을 진행한 후, 이 정보를 바탕으로 구문 변환과 개체명 인식을 한다. 이 결과값을 의사 문장으로 변형, 문장 분리 규칙이 적용 가능할 경우, 분리된 문장에 대하여 다중 디코딩을 수행하고, 후처리기에서 접합 규칙에 따라 번역문을 생성하였다. 실험을 통하여 어순 배치의 경우 distortion 모델에 의존하지 않고 구문 변환(rule-based syntactic transfer)규칙을 사용하는 것이 더욱 효과적인 것으로 나타났다.

This year I published a Korean translation of On War in three volumes, written by Prussian general Carl von Clausewitz. I believe it is the first unabridged Korean translation from the original German text, Vom Kriege. It is true that the work has been translated into Korean several times, but some translations have been done from English or Japanese versions, while others are abridged ones. It is not easy to make a good translation of On War, partly because the book is actually an unfinished work, and partly because it contains almost all academic subjects in social sciences. Moreover, two aspects of the dialectical logic in the book make it more difficult to understand. One is inductive reasoning, the other is deductive explanation. The former is to 'ascend' to draw principles and generalizations from empirical experience, the latter is to 'descend' to describe and explain given principles, often by concrete examples. Considering these difficulties, if we want to have better translations than existing ones, there should be substantial commentaries which contain not only history of wars, but also biographies and geographies concerned. I hope that On War can be taught and studied in many universities, for it will make it easier to produce reliable commentaries.

본 연구는 '블리자드(Blizzard)'사(社)의 게임 '하스스톤(Hearthstone)'에 적용된 창조적·문화적 의역에 대해 확인하고 이에 대한 수용자들의 반응을 고찰하고자 한다. 본 연구에서는 의역의 기법에 대해 고찰한 뒤 다양한 의역 번역 전략이 '하스스톤'에 어떻게 적용되었으며 의역된 번역어들에 대한 수용자의 반응을 설문조사를 통해 확인하였다. 그 결과 수용자들은 번역어가 원어의 의미와 멀지 않은 번역을 선호했으나 대체할 적절한 단어가 없는 경우에는 다소 의미에 거리가 있어도 번역을 수용했다.

In this paper, a korean text to sign language translation system is designed and implemented for the hearing impaired people to learn letters and to have a conversation with normal people. We adopt the direct method for machine translation which uses morphological analysis and the dictionary search. And we define the necessary sign language dictionaries. Based on this processes, the system translate korean sentences to sign language moving picture. The proposed dictionaries are composed of the basic sign language dictionary, the compound sing language dictionary, and the resemble sign language dictionary. The basic sign language dictionary includes basic symbols and moving pictures of korean sign language. The compound sing language dictionary is composed of key-words of basic sign language. In addition, we offered the similar letters at the resemble sign language dictionary. The moving pictures of searched sign symbols are displayed on a screen in GIF formats by continuous motion of sign symbols or represented by the finger spelling based on the korean code analysis. The proposed system can provide quick sign language search and complement the lack of sign languages in the translation process by using the various sign language dictionaries which are characterized as korean sign language. In addition, to represent the sign language using GIF makes it possible to save the storage space of the sign language. Objectives : Classical texts such as 『Donguibogam』 and 『Yixuerumen』 have previously been used as primers to students of Korean Medicine. However, their massiveness in volume and comprehensiveness in contents make it unfit for students whose school curriculum lacked classical chinese. This paper suggests another introductory text that would be more practical in the current situation. Methods :Based on the translation of the main text and annotations, the clinical meanings of the contents were studied. Afterwards its practical application as a primer was considered. Results : The text focuses on the medically important issues in simple and accessible form, making it an important text for beginners to establish the foundation in medicine. Conclusions : Beginners will be able to establish a standard for basic medical knowledge through this text and also apply its contents to diseases that are relatively easy to treat.

Editors of medieval texts that are translated from other languages face difficulties when the translation differs significantly from the original. Are the differences unintended, the result of misunderstanding and mistranslation\ulcorner Or do they proceed from a conscious decision on the translator's part to change the meaning of the original\ulcorner Is it possible to be sure one knows the difference\ulcorner This paper discusses three test cases encountered in preparing for the Early English Text Society a critical edition of Sidrak and Bokkus, the fifteenth-century English verse translation of the Old French prose book of knowledge, Le livre de Sidrac.
