  • The invention of computers is one of the best things that have ever happened to mankind and undergraduate students can benefit immensely from the use of computers. However, observations have showed that in the present Nigerian society, there are a number of issues arising from unethical use of computers. Interactions with some undergraduate students revealed that a majority have fallen into the trap of unethical use of computers at one time or another. This seemingly alarming rate of unethical use of computers therefore calls for concern. A literature search has shown that awareness and perception of computer ethics have not been adequately researched within the Nigerian context. Thus, the main objective of this study was to examine the awareness and perception of computer ethics by undergraduate students in a Nigerian university. Descriptive survey research method was used and the study population was comprised of 12,894 undergraduate students of the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. The multistage random sampling technique was used to select a sample size of 292 and the questionnaire was used to collect data. Findings showed that the level of awareness of respondents on issues associated with computer ethics was high (mean=45.19). A majority of the respondents had a favorable perception of computer ethics and the most prominent factor identified that could hinder adherence to computer ethics as noted by most of the respondents was the poor economic situation of the country. Part of the recommendations was that government at all levels should provide responsible and responsive leadership.

  • The main purpose of this research is to understand the strongest predictors of wearable adoption among athletes with an emphasis on the perceived ethics of biometric data. We performed a word co-occurrence study of biometrics research to determine the ethical constructs of biometric data. A questionnaire incorporating the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), Health Belief Model and Biometric Data Ethics was then designed to develop a neural network model to predict the adoption of wearable sensors among athletes. Our model shows that wearable adoption's strongest predictors are perceived ethics, perceived profit, and perceived threat; which can be categorized as professional stressors. The key theoretical contribution of this paper is to extend the literature on UTAUT by developing a predictive modeling of factors affecting acceptance of wearables by athletes, and highlighting the ethical implications of athlete's adoption of wearables.

  • This study was conducted to identify the effects of the degree of death orientation, attitudes toward withdrawing life-sustaining treatment, and awareness of biomedical ethics on paramedic students' own biomedical ethics. The participants of this study were 228 paramedic students from a college located in D city. Data were collected from April to June 2019 through a self-report questionnaire. There was a positive correlation between awareness of biomedical ethics and attitude toward withdrawing life-sustaining treatment (r=.63, p<.001). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that the factors affecting students' awareness of biomedical ethics were religion (β=.12, p=.018) and their attitude toward withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment (β=.61, p<.001), with an explanatory power of 41.0%. Educational programs must focus on attitudes toward withdrawing life-sustaining treatment to improve paramedic students' awareness of biomedical ethics.

A survey was administered for this study and a total of 594 pre-service science teachers studying in college/university of education participated. The survey was organized to examine participants' 1) experience in ethics education in science and technology, 2) recognition on the needs of ethics education in science and technology, and 3) the need for it in elementary and secondary school. Each item was responded using either 1 to 5 Likert type scale, multiple choices, or open questionnaires. The results showed that 37.4% of participants obtain science technology information from the mass media, and 23.5% from the school education. Only 8.4% of the participants had the experience of taking class on ethics in science and technology. In terms of level of confidence in understanding the ethical issues in science and technology, the average response was 2.73. However, their perception on the needs of the ethics education ranges from 3.34 to 4.58, which is much stronger than other responses on average. This strong perception on the needs was much higher for pre-service science teachers for elementary school, than those of the secondary school(p<.05). All participants recognized the need for ethics education in science and technology at both elementary and secondary school. In responses for which subject should provide ethical issues on science and technology, science class was most frequently suggested (62.4%), followed by ethics class (29.1%). In responses for the most efficient form of learning, they suggested that case studies (43.5%), followed by discussions (41.4%) would be an efficient way to learn. Even in the responses of open questionnaires asking for efficient ways of learning ethical issues, participants suggested that discussions on various ethical issues on the cases in the science and technology would provide practical and substantial learning.
