Teaching Assistants as a Prerequisite for Best Practice in Special Education Settings in Saudi Arabia

  • The Saudi Arabian Special Education Regulations define the role and requirements from teaching assistants within the educational process. Although all public special education programs are subject to such regulations, their implementation in practice sometimes appears contradictory. Therefore, special educators frequently encounter a range of problems when they fail to comply with such regulations. This article discusses how teaching assistants influence the teaching practices delivered to students with disabilities in special education settings. A qualitative case study approach was conducted using 22 semi-structured interviews. The results suggest a need to focus on the role of the teaching assistant in special education classes to ensure exposure to effective learning practices for students with disabilities. Based on these findings, a number of important implications for future practice, in terms adopting appropriate provisions are suggested.

초등학교 수학교실에서 사회적 관행과 정체성의 상호작용 분석 (A Study on Interaction between Social Practices and Identities in Elementary Mathematics Classroom)

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the learning mathematics in elementary mathematics classroom by considering mathematics as a kind of social practices and mathematics classroom as a kind of community of practice. The research questions of this study are as followings: 1) Do the identities which teacher has on mathematics and teaching mathematics, influence the social practices formed in mathematics classroom, and the identities which students has on mathematics and learning mathematics? 2) Do the social practices formed in mathematics classroom, and the identities which students has on mathematics and learning mathematics, influence the identities which teacher has on mathematics and teaching mathematics? This study was based on ethnomethodology. It was executed participation observations, interviews and surveys with teacher and 5 graders to collect the data for the social practices formed their classroom and their identities, and was analyzed the interaction between the social practices of mathematics classroom and teacher and students' identities. We found the scenes that teacher's identities influenced the social practices of mathematics classroom and students' identities, and also the scenes that the social practices of mathematics classroom and students' identities influenced teacher's identities. So, we could know that there existed the interaction between the social practices of mathematics classroom and teacher and students' identities.

An Exploratory Analysis of Constructivist Teaching Practices and Science Teaching Interactions in Earth Science Classes

  • This study aimed to explore how to characterize the earth science inquiry in schools in terms of science teaching interaction and constructivist teaching practice. The constructivist teaching practices were analyzed with Reformed Teaching Observation Protocol (RTOP) in three aspects including (1) student oriented class implementation, (2) subject knowledge and representation, and (3) classroom communication. Fourteen earth science classes were observed and scored with RTOP. The class was evaluated to be transitional stage in terms of constructivist teaching, e.g., moving toward student-centered teaching practice. Especially, Korean teachers tend to lean their classes more on propositional knowledge than procedural knowledge. To interpret science teaching interactions, an earth science teacher with a RTOP top rank was selected. Her class was then videotaped for detailed analysis. I adopted the analytical framework of communicative approaches and discourse patterns among the five aspects of interactions presented by Mortimer and Scott (2003). It was found that this earth science teacher used more authoritative patterns than the dialogic. In addition, she used IRE discourse pattern more frequently. Interestingly, teachers interacted with their students more frequently in the form of repeated (or IRE chain pattern), that is IRFRF (teacher initiation-student response-teacher feedback-student response-teacher feedback) in the context of dialogic communicative approaches, while simple IRE occurred in an authoritative approach. In earth science classrooms, typical interaction may well be constructed in the form of IRFRF chains to allow students free conjectures and abduction.

교육실습이 중등 예비교사들의 순환학습에 대한 인식에 미치는 영향 (Influences of Teaching Practices upon Pre-service Secondary Teachers' Perceptions on Learning Cycle)

  • 이 연구에서는 교육실습이 중등 예비교사들의 순환 학습에 대한 인식에 미치는 영향을 순환학습에 대한 이해도에 따라 조사했다. 2개 사범대학의 화학교육과 4학년 학생 37명을 대상으로 교육실습 전에 순환학습에 대한 이해도와 인식 검사를 실시했고, 교육실습 후에는 순환학습에 대한 인식 검사를 실시했다. 또한, 순환학습에 대한 인식이 크게 감소한 예비교사 7명을 선정하여 인식 감소에 영향을 미친 요인을 조사하기 위한 심층면담도 실시했다. 연구 결과, 교육실습 전 중등 예비교사들의 순환학습에 대한 이해도는 높지 않았으나, 순환학습의 장단점이나 실행의지, 실행과 관련된 외부요인 등의 측면에 대해 비교적 긍정적으로 인식했다. 그러나 교육실습을 마친 후에는 이런 긍정적인 인식이 다소 감소했으며, 특히 순환학습에 대한 이해도가 낮았던 예비교사들보다 높았던 예비교사들의 감소폭이 더 컸다. 그 원인으로 면담에 참여한 예비교사들은 예비교사 요인, 학생 요인, 교육과정 요인, 외부환경 요인을 지적했다. 이에 대한 교육적 함의를 논의했다.

Development of a Product Oriented Group for Mathematics Teachers Professional Growth

  • A research group consisting of some mathematics education scholars and school teachers has been formed to build a website which intended to combine both theories and practices of mathematical teaching since 2002. There were three working stages: video-tapping realistic math teaching, developing video discs of different themes, and designing e-Learning. The group members learned knowledge of teaching by actual participating. On the other hand, the products enabled the audience to get professional development in knowledge of both mathematics and teaching. Management process of this group and effects upon the participants and users will be presented and discussed in this paper. 유아 교사의 이론과 실천에 관한 고찰: bottom-up 관점을 중심으로 (Theories and Practices of Early Childhood Teachers: Bottom-up Perspectives)

  • 본 연구는 문헌연구를 통해 이론과 실천의 관계에서 교수 행위를 바라보는 상반된 두 가지 관점 중 bottom-up 관점에서 유아 교사의 실천을 탐색한다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 전통적으로 유아교육에서는 top-down 관점을 중심으로 발달심리학 이론, 발달에 적합한 이론과 실제에 관한 담론, 그리고 발달이론에 근거하여 개발된 다양한 프로그램모델의 틀 안에서 유아교사의 실천과 교수행위를 정의하고 합리화해 왔다. 둘째, 이와 반대로 bottom-up 관점은 현장에서의 교사의 행위와 실천이 이론을 이끈다고 보며 반성적 사고를 통해 교사가 현장에서 실천방법을 구성해 가는데 초점을 둔다. 이 관점에서 실천은 이론의 근거가 되며, 교사는 암묵적 이론을 형성하면서 연구자의 역할을 한다고 보면서 개인경험, 학교풍토와 맥락, 그리고 우세한 교육담론이 교사의 이론을 구성하는 데 영향을 미치는 요소로 본다. 셋째, 실제로 예비교사와 현직교사를 대상으로 하는 연구결과로부터 예비교사는 경험으로부터 오는 교수에 대한 기대가 양성과정에서의 담론과의 교류, 실습 및 학교의 영향으로부터 교수에 대한 이론을 발달시킨다는 것을 보여준다. 또한 현직교사들은 그들이 지닌 암묵적 지식의 전개가 지속적인 전문성 발달과 관련이 있으며 행정적 압력 및 현장의 복잡한 현실적인 문제들을 개인적으로 발달시킨 전략을 사용하여 해결함을 보여준다. 연구 결과에 따라 bottom-up 관점에 근거한 향후 교사 실천에 관한연구 방향과 시사점을 제안하였다.

Teacher Change in Teaching Practices Towards Developing Students' Reasoning in Mathematics

  • Research shows that formative assessment has a more powerful effect on student learning than summative assessment. This case study of an 8th grade algebra classroom focuses on how the implementation of Formative Assessment Lessons (FALs) and the participation in teacher learning communities related to FALs changed in the teacher's instructional practices, over the course of a year, to promote students' mathematical reasoning and justification. Two classroom observations are analyzed to identify how the teacher elicited and built on students' mathematical reasoning, and how the teacher prompted students to respond to and develop one another's mathematical ideas. Findings show that the teacher solicited students' reasoning more often as the academic year progressed, and students also began developing mathematical reasoning in meaningful ways, such as articulating their mathematical thinking, responding to other students' reasoning, and building on those ideas leading by the teacher. However, findings also show that teacher change in teaching practices is complicated and intertwined with various dimensions of teacher development. This study contributes to the understanding of changes in teaching practices, which has significant implications for teacher professional development and frameworks for investigating teacher learning.

중학교 가정과 교사와 기술과 교사의 양성평등의식과 양성평등교육 실천도 차이 (Differences of Gender Equity Education between the Home Economics and Technology in the Middle Schools - Focusing on Awareness of Gender Equity and the Degrees of Gender Equity Teaching Practice)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the differences of gender equity awareness and the degrees of gender equity teaching practices between the home economics teachers and technology teachers in the middle school. For the final analysis of the study. the data collected from 277 teachers (127 home economics and 150 technology teachers) of the middle schools in Kyong-gi Province were used. The framework for the awareness of gender equity has been modified from the study made in 1999 by Korean Institute for the Development of Women. A set of questions on gender equity teaching practice developed by Chung Hae-suk in 1998 has been modified for the study. Mean. standard deviation. percentage. t-test. Pearson correlation. and regression analysis were used to analyze the data utilizing the SAS Program. The findings of the study are as follows : 1) Both the home economics and the technology teachers show relatively above average in the awareness of gender equity. In comparing the two groups. the home economics teachers were higher in the awareness score than that of the technology teachers. 2) The impact of individual personality on the awareness appeares most significant in relations to gender of subject and teaching subject : moreover. the gender of teacher appears to explain the awareness of the gender equity more than the subject they teach. 3) Both the home economics and the technology teacher show relatively balanced teaching practices as far as gender equity is concerned. Between the two groups of teachers. home economics teachers score is higher in practicing gender equity in their teaching activities than the technology teachers. 4) The awareness of gender equity proves to be the most influential variable in their gender equity teaching practices.

초임 중등 과학 교사의 교수활동에 대한 지향과 실행: 동기 유발과 학생 이해를 중심으로 (Orientations and Execution of Beginning Secondary Science Teachers' Teaching Practices: Motivating and Understanding Students)

  • 이 연구의 목적은 초임 중등 과학 교사들이 과학 수업에서 학생들의 동기 유발과 학생 이해에 대해서 어떠한 지향을 하고 있으며, 그것이 실제 수업에서 어떻게 실행되고 있는지를 분석하는 것이다. 연구 참여자는 수도권 중 고등학교에서 근무하는 경력 1년 미만의 과학 교사 6명이다. 자료 수집은 수업 관찰 및 녹화, 구조화된 심층 면담과 우선순위 면담, 수업 자료를 통해 이루어졌다. 모든 수업과 면담 자료를 전사한 후, 분석틀에 맞추어 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 초임 과학 교사들은 동기 유발과 학생 이해에 관해 '관리 중심 과학 수업'에서부터 '전통적 과학 수업'까지 지향하고 있었으며, '구성주의적 과학 수업'은 지향하지 못하였다. 지향하는 바를 실행하는데 있어서 한명의 교사는 전문 단계의 실행 수준을 보여주었지만, 나머지 교사들은 초보 단계의 실행을 나타냈다. 본 연구를 통해 과학 교사들에게 동기 유발과 학생 이해에 관한 구성주의적 과학 수업의 방향을 제시해 줄 수 있을 것이다.

University Faculty's Perspectives on Implementing ChatGPT in their Teaching

  • The present study explored a comprehensive investigation of university professors' perspectives on the implementation of ChatGPT - an artificial intelligence-powered language model - in their teaching practices. A diverse group of 30 university professors responded to a questionnaire about the level of their interest in implementing the tool, willingness to apply it, and concerns they have regarding the intervention of ChatGPT in higher education setting. The results showed that the participants are highly interested in employing the tool into their teaching practice, and find that the students are likely to benefit from using ChatGPT in classroom settings. On the other hand, they displayed concerns regarding high depandency on data, privacy-related issues, lack of supports required, and technical contraints. In today's fast-paced society, educators are urged to mindfully apply this inevitable generative AI means with thoughtfulness and ethical considerations to and for their learners. Relevant topics are discussed to successfully intervene AI tools in teaching practices in higher education.
