  • In this research, we interviewed primary school teachers and students with hypothetical situations questions and got a comprehensive picture of the status quo of what is happening in the new mathematics classrooms of Mainland China, that is, teachers' conceptions of mathematics and their teaching approaches influence the students' conceptions of mathematics to a large extent. For the teacher who emphasizes the precision and rigidity of mathematics, her students focus on the superficial characteristics of mathematics. On the contrary, for the teacher who believes that mathematics is an open process, related to real life and rich in content, her students are more interested in mathematics and have more diverse conceptions.

  • This study aimed to investigate beliefs of secondary pre-service teachers in mathematics. In particular, conceptions of teaching and learning were examined, For the purpose of this study, using an instrument, Teaching and Learning Conceptions Questionnaire, developed by Chan & Elliot(2004), a survey was conducted for 86 secondary mathematics pre-service teachers in Incheon area. The results showed that the mathematics pre-service teachers strongly agreed with the constructivist perspectives. In addition, compared to the juniors, the seniors responded more positive in the questions relative to the traditionalist view and the male students agreed more with the traditional conceptions, as comparing to the female students in this study. This study had limitations on the extent of the research site and participant. However, it would provide foundational information about pre-service teachers for teacher educators.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among teachers' conceptions of art education, and children's creative personality by mediating effects of teachers' role of creativity improvement. Participants included 156 teachers and 593 children in kindergartens and child care centers. Results indicated the following. First, the higher teacher's concepts of art education was the higher their role of creativity improvement was and children's creative personality was. Second, teachers' conceptions of art education and their role of creativity improvement were positively influenced by the children's creative personality. Third, the children's creative personality was influenced by the teachers' conceptions of art education and the their role of creative improvement control and the mediating effects of the teachers' role of creative improvement was significant in a partial way. The implication is that the teachers' conceptions of art education may enhance the their role of creative improvement and foster children's creative personality.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate pre-service elementary school teachers' understanding about alternative energy and to identify their alternative conceptions. The two-tier instrument had been developed by Cheong et al. (2015) were used for this study. Twelve items from the instrument consisted of four categories: 'source of alternative energy', 'greenhouse gas emission', 'cost in electricity and construction' and 'advantages and disadvantages'. One hundred and fifteen pre-service elementary school teachers were participated in online survey during the semester. The results analyzed using SPSS 26.0. were as follows: First, the correct response rate varied depending on the content of item. Items related to characteristics and advantages & disadvantages of alternative energy showed high percentage of correct answers. Whereas, items regarding the principles of alternative energy showed relatively low percentage of correct answers. Second, there are some items showing statistically meaningful differences according to students' high school track. Nevertheless, there are no significant differences in overall. Third, we identified twelve alternative conceptions about alternative energy from students' answer distribution. Educational implications were discussed based on the results.

  • In this study, we analyzed pre-service teachers' levels of pedagogical reasoning while watching video clips of elementary school students' discussions of their conceptions of solution and dissolution. 81 pre-service teachers participated in the study. It was found that many pre-service teachers had scientific conceptions, and pre-service teachers who had non-scientific conceptions showed misconceptions similar to those of elementary school students. In both conceptions, pre-service teachers partially or comprehensively interpreted the students' misconceptions with reference to the evidence. However, the rates of pre-service teachers who misinterpreted or simply restated the students' utterances were quite high. Many pre-service teachers suggested only one factor related to levels of reasoning about causes of misconceptions, and most suggested factors were related to the student factor. The level of reasoning about instructional decisions differed according to dissolution and solution conceptions. Actions linked to students' thinking were more closely related to students' specific thinking than to their generic thinking, and among these, student-centered action was seen. From the above results, we sought ways of improving pre-service teachers' pedagogical reasoning.

  • Scientific literacy implies an adequate understanding of the nature of science. However, little is known about factors that can influence students' conceptions of the nature of science. The purpose of this study was to test the validity of the prevalent assumption that teachers' philosophical perspectives of science directly influence their students' conceptions of the nature of science. A comparison between science teachers' and students' perspectives of science did not support the assumption that a science teachers' perspectives of science is significantly related to students' conceptions of science. The data clearly indicated that there was no relationship between teachers' philosophical perspectives and those of their students. The results convincingly indicated that the nature of science was not being considered or taught to students as a consequence of students' needs and curriculum guide objectives. It is believed that the results of this investigation will help to redirect the focus of future efforts to promote more adequate conceptions of the nature of science in our secondary schools.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate teachers'conceptions of mathematics through the conception on compositions of mathematical knowledge, the conception on structure of mathematical knowledge, the conception on status of mathematical knowledge, the conception on mathematical activity, and the conception of mathematics learning. This study reached the following conclusions: Most of teachers has more internal viewpoint than external viewpoint on the compositions, structures and status of mathematical knowledge, mathematical activity and mathematics learning.

  • This study was to understand the components that influence preservice secondary teachers' conceptions about 'seasonal changes' We selected 74 university science education students among whom 23 were in the second, 23 in the third, and 28 in the fourth year. The data collected from the paper-pencil test and individual interview with students. The results of this study show that the students had considerable apparent alternative conceptions, and that the 'distance theory' had most important effects on their alternative conceptions. It can be said that preservice secondary teachers' initial models of the seasonal change have their origin in their belief sets (specific theory) related to 'seasonal change', on the basis of which they can interpret their observations and cultural information with the constraints of a naive frame-work of physics. The structures and possible sources of their alternative conceptions for overcoming these alternative conceptions were also discussed. Implications for preservice science teacher education related to the results were discussed.

  • In order to study the effect of student's conceptions about force and motion into the graph construction in kinematics in college physics course, the tasks of constructing the qualitative graph in the similar problem context used in force conception was asked to the first 74 and third 97 student teacher in teachers' university. The frequencies analysis showed that student teachers had the naive conceptions that the throwing force was still acted to a upwarding ball. They also had the popular Aristotelian views about motion. These naive conceptions coexisted with the scientific conception about gravitational force. In a simple pendulum problem no one had the correct acceleration concepts which varies the direction in swing. This result suggest that student teacher had more difficulties in a acceleration problem than in a velocity problem In v-t and a-t graph construction tasks, the number of categories of a-t graphs were more than that of v-t graphs. There were many graph errors in a sign of velocity and acceleration. The acceleration conceptions without the relations of changes in velocity made the kinematics graphs more various shapes. The force and motion conceptions influenced the ability to construct the kinematics graphs.

  • The focus of this study was to identify and describe environmental preconceptions held by pre-service elementary teachers about three issues : greenhouse effect, ozone layer depletion and acid rain. Two hundred and twenty nine pre-service elementary teachers participated in this study. A 36 question survey was created by one of the authors. The questions focused on the cause, effects, and interactions of three environmental issues greenhouse effect of one layer depletion and acid rain. Pre-service elementary teachers answered the questions on a Likert scale. An analysis of the survey data indicated that the majority of pre-service elementary teachers possess an array of incorrect conceptions about the causes and effects of the greenhouse effect ozone layer depletion, and acid rain. and also many pre-service elementary teachers thought that there were causal relationships among the increase in greenhouse effect, the destruction of ozone layer, and the increase of acid rain.
