  • The purpose of this study was to explore the possibility of implementing 'responsive teaching (RT)' in elementary school science classrooms. A review of relevant literature yielded a tentative framework of RT which consisted of three characteristics of RT and example practices for each characteristic. The RT framework was used to analyze elementary science lessons on the topic of the transpiration in plant leaves. The data sources were audio recordings of three $5^{th}$ grade classrooms which included both the whole-class instruction and student group activities. The data were examined through collaboration between the teacher who had taught the lessons and a university-based science education researcher. It was revealed that the implementation of RT was limited when the teacher's intervention was focused on completing tasks; when it was out of the contexts of student activities; when the teacher provided earlier what students were supposed to find out by themselves; and when the teacher's comments were evaluation-centered. By contrast, the implementation of RT was made highly possible when the teacher's intervention induced an intellectual debate among students; when the teacher negotiated meanings with students; when the teacher connected what students shared to scientific knowledge; and when the teacher prompted students to solve a new problem. Implications about implementing and studying RT were discussed.

  • The purpose of this research was to determine whether the present Korean teacher education programs for secondary science teachers are effective in improving the teacher conceptions of constructivism and STS. It is because the current Korean National Science Curriculum is consistent with both ideas as reforms. The teacher education programs sampled in the research included pre-service programs and two types of in-service programs. These two were the Qualifying In-service Program and the Iowa Korean Science Teachers Workshop. The Iowa Program was considered as an experimental program emphasized the constructivist perspective. Specially designed questionnaires for identifying teacher conceptions before and after the programs were administered. The conceptions about constructivism and STS improved as a result of the instruction in both of the pre-service and in-service teacher education programs. The pre-service program was more effective than the in-service programs in improving the teacher conceptions of both constructivism and STS. The Qualifying Inservice program was less effective than Iowa Korean Science Teachers Workshop. It was necessary for inservice programs for Korean secondary science teachers to be more emphasized on constructivism and STS. Iowa Korean Science Teachers Workshop provided a possible example to design a new special in-service program focused on constructivist perspectives as a way of aligning the Korean National Science Curriculum more quickly with recommended teaching practices in Korean schools.

  • Teachers' beliefs about teaching English are reflected in their practices in the classroom. They influence on the students' attitude to English learning. Any teacher training program expects the trainees to change or modify their existing beliefs and attitude through the new ideas and information introduced by the program toward a desired direction. The present study describes a teacher training program for elementary school English teachers and compares the beliefs of the teachers about teaching English before and after the training. The subjects are the elementary school English teachers around Chungnam area who get a special training of 120 hours during January 1997. The investigation of the subjects' beliefs on English teaching is conducted through examining two journals of each subject before and after the training. The journals show the teachers' inner flow of thought, so teacher trainers are expected to get insight on their general instructional considerations and have implications on the future teacher training program through examining these journals. In addition, the journal writing itself gives the teachers opportunity to reflect their practice and rethink about their beliefs, and develop themselves as professional English teachers.

  • school mathematics is based on the premise that teacher have extensively complex mathematics content and pedagogical content knowledge to employ teaching to facilitate students' conceptualization of mathematics knowledge. In this paper we have presented the realities of teacher education program about several countries and three source area in teaching school mathematics. As a result we suggest that for developing mathematics teacher education First, communities have to hold teachers in high esteem due to confucian heritage. Second, our university have t provide one year internship for training for practices and the use of interactive multimedia simulation. Third, college courses have to help students discard misunderstanding knowledge and briefs about mathematics and pedagogy they bring to the university. Fourth, our country have to reform teacher education system. Fifth, the government have to pay the tuition costs for more students.

  • This study is observed in this paper that how the mathematical beliefs of elementary pre-service teachers are reflected in planning and implementing actual mathematics classes. The subjects for this study are senior students at the university of education. After examining their mathematical beliefs and analyzing their actual mathematics classes in a teaching practicum, the following conclusions are drawn. First, the mathematical beliefs of elementary pre-service teachers have generally shown in a similar tendency. The beliefs formed by the students' experience and the beliefs established in the course of preparing to become teachers have coexisted. Second, the teachers' belief in learning mathematics and the teaching practices are largely inconsistent. Third, when elementary pre-service teachers plan and implement their mathematic classes, they are influenced by their guidance teachers and students as well as their own mathematical beliefs.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine what factors affect the construction of preservice white mathematics teachers' racial identities and the relationship between their racial identities and Culturally Relevant Teaching (CRT) practices. We examined five white female preservice teachers who enrolled in an elementary mathematics methods course at a private university in the US. We collected data consisting of lesson plans, semi-structured interviews, and reflection of a taught lesson in the 2018 fall term and examined them using qualitative research methods. We found that preservice teachers' racial identities were affected by their backgrounds, K-12 school experiences, and practicum school environment. We also found a relationship between teachers' sensitivity to racial issues and their endorsement of CRT strategies. The findings also revealed that the relationships were mediated by practicum school contexts. Based on the findings, we provided practical implications for the teacher education programs.

  • This study examined what questions posed, and for arranging the matters, what decisions made, what practices put into by elementary preservice teachers during his or her enacting and reflecting mathematics teaching. Analysis of the study focused on the mathematics instructions practiced by four participants in practicum for senior students. Their own questions raised by each one in the instructional designs, performances, and reflections were picked out and categorized by five dimensions of mathematics instruction; the nature of classroom tasks, the role of the teacher, the social culture of the classroom, mathematical tools as learning supports, and equity and accessibility. Their instructional decision-makings and action-takings for answering to these questions were analised.
