  • This study aimed to investigate how elementary school students' science reading ability is influenced by collaborative problem-solving for competency instruction strategy using science reading text. This study recruited two groups of elementary students in fifth grade. The experimental group underwent an instruction strategy using science reading text, while the comparative group experienced a science class using a textbook. Afterward, data from the science reading ability tests, voice recordings of the discussion process involving each group, and class videos were collected and analyzed. The results showed that science classes that used collaborative problem-solving for their competency instruction strategy via science reading text were effective in enhancing elementary school students' science reading ability. Meanwhile, the science reading ability test results indicated that the experimental group had statistically higher total scores than the comparative group in the three subelements, especially "introspection and evaluation" and "integration and interpretation" owing to their significant improvement in high-level cognitive processes. In these classes, the students read the materials that the teacher provided, participated in the discussion based on what they have read, and had the chance to reflect on their reading processes. Overall, students' science reading ability was enhanced through this process.

  • This study explores pre-service secondary mathematics teachers (PSTs)' noticing competency. 17 PSTs participated in this study as a part of the mathematics teaching method class. Individual PST's essays regarding the question 'what effective mathematics teaching would be?' that they discussed and wrote at the beginning of the course were collected as the first data. PSTs' written analysis of an expert teacher's teaching video, colleague PSTs' demo-teaching video, and own demo-teaching video were also collected and analyzed. Findings showed that most PSTs' noticing level improved as the class progressed and showed a pattern of focusing on each key aspect in terms of the Teaching for Robust Understanding of Mathematics (TRU Math) framework, but their reasoning strategies were somewhat varied. This suggests that the TRU Math framework can support PSTs to improve the competency of 'what to attend' among the noticing components. In addition, the instructional reasoning strategies imply that PSTs' noticing reasoning strategy was mostly related to their interpretation of noticing components, which should be also emphasized in the teacher education program.

  • This study is a hermeneutic phenomenological study on the experiences of 10 beginning science teachers who have been building positive or negative identity as teachers for the first 3 months. This study was conducted by four steps of the phenomenological qualitative research process suggested by Yeu (2015) based on the study of hermeneutic phenomenology suggested by van Manen (1990). The main data of this study is the transcription data of the telephone interviews collected in consideration of the working area of the research subjects. The main theme is found by categorizing and conceptualizing the meaning of the phenomenon revealed in the data and the process of confirming the legitimacy of the main theme. The results of this study show that the experiences of beginning science teachers that could affect their positive identity as teachers have common moments when they realize that 'I am a necessary person for someone'. On the other hand, the teachers create negative teacher identity when they doubt their teaching competency, particularly when they are not confident about their attitudes toward students or when they are unable to engage students actively in lessons. The results of this study provide important implications for pre-service science teacher preparation program in Korea.
