Engineered DNA-binding domains provide a powerful technology for numerous biomedical studies due to their ability to recognize specific DNA sequences. Zinc fingers (ZF) are one of the most common DNA-binding domains and have been extensively studied for a variety of applications, such as gene regulation, genome engineering and diagnostics. Another novel DNA-binding domain known as a transcriptional activator-like effector (TALE) has been more recently discovered, which has a previously undescribed DNA-binding mode. Due to their modular architecture and flexibility, TALEs have been rapidly developed into artificial gene targeting reagents. Here, we describe the methods used to design these DNA-binding proteins and their key applications in biomedical research.

Objectives The purpose of this study is to report the effect of oriental demonstration treatment for episodic vertigo of Meniere's disease. Meniere's Disease characterized by recurrent prostrating episodic vertigo, nausea, vomiting, sensory hearing loss, tinnitus, and a feeling of fullness in the ear associated with generalized dilation of the membranous labyrinth (endolymphatic hydrops). The cause of Meniere's disease is unknown, and the pathophysiology is poorly understood. Methods We experienced one case of Meniere's disease treated with Asian medical treatment, acupuncture and herbal medication. 64-year-old female patient was diagnosed with Meniere's disease by western medical doctor. Methods: Saam acupuncture Sojangjungkyuk applied to the patient. Results After treatment her episodic vertigo, nausea, vomiting and endolymphatic hydrops were decreased but the level of tinnitus it was not improved as much as other symptoms. Conclusions Saam Acupuncture of Asian medical treatment could be safe and effective.

Surface modifications using a radio frequency Ar-plasma treatment were performed on a polypropylene (PP) blend used for automotive bumper fascia. The surface characterization and morphology were examined. With increasing aging time, there was an increase in wettability, oxygen containing polar functional groups (i.e., C-O, C=O and O-C=O) due to oxidation, the amount of tale, and bearing depth and roughness on the PP surface, while there was a decrease in the number of hydrocarbon groups (i.e., C-C and C-H). AFM indicated that the Ar-plasma-treatment on a PP blend surface transforms the wholly annular surface into a locally dimpled surface, leading to an improvement in wettability. SEM showed that the PP layer observed in the non-plasma-treated sample was removed after the Ar-plasma treatment and the rubber particles were exposed to the surface. The observed surface characterization and morphologies are responsible for the improved wettability and interfacial adhesion between the PP blend substrate and bumper coating layers.

Humans do not have tails; however, a congenital anomaly named "human tail" has been recognized since old times. In contrast with its impactful name, the anomaly itself is not fatal, and thus it has not been considered as a clinically serious symptom. However, many case reports suggested that retention of "the tail" is closely associated with spinal cord malformation and should be treated with care by neurosurgeons. Therefore, this review summarizes our knowledge regarding the anatomy, function, and development of the tail as a general structure in mammals. Learning the basic knowledge regarding tail anatomy and development would help clinicians to understand the "human tail" more concisely and to select more appropriate examinations or treatments in relation to this congenital anomaly.

자녀 교육에 대한 관심의 증대로 다양한 미디어를 활용하여 많은 유아 교육용 프로그램이 상용화되어 있다. 그 중 스마트폰의 활용 분야가 넓어지면서 자연스럽게 유아 교육 분야도 스마트폰에 접목이 되고 있는 추세이다. 본 논문에서는 동화책을 읽어주는 행위와 90년대 초중반에 유행했던 게임북을 스마트폰에 접목시켜 자녀와 부모가 함께 할 수 있는 유아 교육용 어플리케이션 설계를 제안한다. 본 논문의 어플리케이션은 동화를 보는 중 스토리 중간 중간 간단한 미니게임 및 문제 선택 결과에 따라 본래의 동화 스토리 또는 허구 스토리 동화로 진행되어 다양한 엔딩을 볼 수 있다. 또한 동요듣기, 악기다루기, 율동 배우기, 스트레칭 등 여러 옵션을 제공한다.

프로그램 실행 시 동화(텍스트)를 읽을 수 있게 하는 입력 파일을 받을 수 있게 만든다. 이렇게 받은 텍스트를 프로그램이 읽어 들여 알고리즘으로 대입한다. 알고리즘은 읽은 텍스트 중에 중요 단어를 뽑아내어 DB에 이에 알맞은 삽화를 요청하게 된다. 요청을 받은 데이터베이스는 다시 프로그램에 이미지를 보내주고, 프로그램은 이 삽화를 그 텍스트에 출력시키게 된다. 이 과정이 한 페이지를 만드는 과정이며, 원하지 않는 페이지는 건너 뛸 수 있게 한다. 이러한 작업을 반복하여 새로운 책 한권이 완성이 된다.

최근 물리적 언택트(Untact)와 사회적 온택트(Ontact)를 이끄는 기술에 대한 관심이 커지면서 가상현실(VR:Virtual Reality) 기술을 활용한 교육이 주목받고 있다. 이와 더불어 교육 환경이 경험과 체험 위주의 맞춤형 교육으로 급격히 변화함에 따라 사용자 요구를 만족시킬 콘텐츠는 부족한 실태이다. 따라서, 본 논문에서는 효과적인 독서교육을 위해 종이책과 전자책을 비교 설명하며 가상현실 기술을 활용한 동화 체험 시스템을 제안하였다. 사용자 얼굴 3D 텍스처 모델링과 멀티플레이어를 통해 비대면 실감형 콘텐츠와 공공데이터를 활용하여 동화선택 기능을 구현하였다. 이처럼 교육적인 관점에서 스스로 선택한 동화를 함께 체험하고 인지한다는 점에서 효과적이다.

This paper presented a course plan based on the ideas I gained from conducting a lecture on Chinese language for students in the second semester of the Chinese language department at a four-year university. In the paper, we sought to deviate from the traditional grammar-translation teaching style and find ways for students to enjoy learning without difficulty in all areas by using the 'total language approach' such as writing, speaking, listening and reading through reading skills. Therefore, we discussed the educational significance and expression of the 'Chinese Languages' class, and introduced the class stages and methods of progress. In other words, they suggested introduction of text plots, explanation of vocabulary and grammar, presentation of original text, questions about text, arrangement of words, ordering sentences to fit the plot, and understanding the plot while looking at the picture.

This paper examines Du Boisian critique of American exceptionalism through a close textual analysis of his writings from early essays to later works. As an attempt to respond to the persistent grip American exceptionalism has on both the academia and the intellectual world at large, this paper tries to fill in the gaps within the discourse of American exceptionalism by exploring the works of one of the most towering American intellectual figures, and suggests that the discourse of American exceptionalism has remained within the purview of white scholars. Although at times inconsistent and contradictory, Du Bois's trenchant critique of American civilization and Western imperialism deconstructs the original ideals of America, creating more than a fissure in the ideology/hegemony/state fantasy of American exceptionalism. I argue that Du Boisian critique of American exceptionalism shows its violent marginalization and racialization based on white supremacy. Du Boisian critique should be a cautionary tale for those scholars who talk of "reform" or "replenishment" or even who occlude the possibility that American exceptionalism has not always functioned as a "state fantasy" by assuming its absolute blinding powers.

This study examined the Korean folklore "Borrowed Fortune from Heaven" from the perspective of Analytical Psychology, considering it a manifestation of the human psyche, and tried to gain a deeper understanding of what happens in our mind. Through the exploration, the researcher was able to re-identify the ongoing psychological process operating in the depths of our mind, pertaining to the emergence of a new dimension of consciousness. Particularly the researcher was able to gain some insights into how the potential psychic elements for the new consciousness are prepared in the unconscious, how they get integrated into the conscious life, and what is essential for the accomplishment of the process. The tale begins with a poor woodcutter who, in order to escape from poverty, starts gathering twice as much firewood. However, the newly acquired amount disappears overnight, so the woodcutter gets perplexed and curious about where it goes and who is taking it. He seeks to find out the truth, which leads him to an unexpected journey to Heaven. There he learns the truth concerning his very tiny amount of fortune, and discovers another big fortune for an unborn person. By pleading with the ruler of Heaven, the woodcutter borrows that grand fortune, on the condition that he must return it to the owner when the time comes. After that, the woodcutter's life undergoes a series of changes, in which he finally becomes a wealthy farmer, but gradually is reminded more and more that the destined time is approaching. In the end, the fortune is completely transferred to the original owner, resulting in a dramatic twist and the creation of a new life circumstances. The overall plot can be understood as a reflection of the psychological process aiming at the evolution of consciousness through renewal. In this context, the woodcutter can be considered a psychic element that undergoes a continuous transformation in preparation for participating in the upcoming new consciousness. In other words, the changes brought about by this figure can be interpreted as a gradual and increasingly detailed foreshadowing of what the forthcoming new consciousness would be like. Interestingly, as the destined time approaches, the protagonist's anguish in conflict reaches its climax, despite his good performance in his role until then. This effectively portrays the difficulty of achieving a new dimension of consciousness, which requires moving past the last step. All the events in the story ultimately converge at this point. After all, the resolution occurs when the protagonist lets go of everything he has and follows the will of Heaven. This implies what is essential for the renewal of consciousness. Only by completely complying with the entire mind, the potential constituents of the new consciousness that should play important roles in a renewal and evolution of consciousness through experiencing, can participate in the ultimate outcome. As long as they remain trapped in any intermediate stage, the totality of the psyche would develop another detour aiming at the final destination, which means the beginning of another period of suffering carrying a purposeful meaning. The tale suggests that this truth will be applied everywhere that renewal of consciousness is directed, whether for an individual or a society.
