Teaching Linear Algebra to High School Students

  • University teachers of linear algebra often feel annoyed and disarmed when faced with the inability of their students to cope with concepts that they consider to be very simple. Usually, they lay the blame on the impossibility for the students to use geometrical intuition or the lack of practice in basic logic and set theory. J.-L. Dorier [(2002): Teaching Linear Algebra at University. In: T. Li (Ed.), Proceedings of the International Congress of Mathematicians (Beijing: August 20-28, 2002), Vol. III: Invited Lectures (pp. 875-884). Beijing: Higher Education Press] mentioned that the situation could not be improved substantially with the teaching of Cartesian geometry or/and logic and set theory prior to the linear algebra. In East Asian countries, science-orientated mathematics curricula of the high schools consist of calculus with many other materials. To understand differential and integral calculus efficiently or for other reasons, students have to learn a lot of content (and concepts) in linear algebra, such as ordered pairs, n-tuple numbers, planar and spatial coordinates, vectors, polynomials, matrices, etc., from an early age. The content of linear algebra is spread out from grades 7 to 12. When the high school teachers teach the content of linear algebra, however, they do not concern much about the concepts of content. With small effort, teachers can help the students to build concepts of vocabularies and languages of linear algebra.

선형방정식계의 해법을 중심으로 한 선형대수에서의 교수법 연구 (Research on Teaching of Linear Algebra Focused on the Solution in the System of Linear Equations)

  • 선형대수는 대수학, 해석학, 기하학 등 수학의 모든 분야의 문제 해결에 광범위하게 이용될 뿐만 아니라 항공공학, 전자공학, 생물학, 지질학, 기계공학 등 다양한 학문영역에서 문제해결의 수단으로 쓰이는 이용도가 높은 학문이다. 따라서 선형대수는 수학 전공 학생뿐만 아니라 일반 학생에게도 쉽게 다가갈 수 있어야 한다. 그러나 대부분의 학생들은 선형대수 학습에서 많은 어려움을 느낀다. 왜 어려움을 느낄까? 선형대수를 학습하는 많은 학생들은 개념을 아예 인지하지 못하거나 자신들이 가지고 있던 산지식을 통해 오개념을 갖게 되고, 연이어 학습되는 부분에서 학습장애를 일으키고 오류를 범하기 때문이다. 본 연구는 선형방정식계의 학습에서 나타나는 학생들의 어려움과 오류를 분석하고 연구하여 보다 효과적인 선형대수 교수법을 제시하였다.

  • We find the necessary and sufficient conditions for the smash product algebra structure and the crossed coproduct coalgebra structure with th dual cocycle $\alpha$ to afford a Hopf algebra (A equation,※See Full-text). If B and H are finite algebra and Hopf algebra, respectively, then the linear dual (※See Full-text) is also a Hopf algebra. We show that the weak coaction admissible mapping system characterizes the new Hopf algebras (※See Full-text).

자동차 엔진의 운동변위 결정을 위한 선형행렬연산법 (A Method Using Linear Matrix Algebra for Determination of Engine Motion in Automobile)

  • A method using the linear matrix algebra is developed in order to determine unknown external forces in linear structural analyses. The method defines a matrix which represents the linearity of the vibrational analysis for a structural system. The unknown external forces are determined by the operations of the matrix. The method is applied to find an engine motion in an automobile system. For a simulation process, an exhaust system is modeled and analyzed by the finite element method. The validity of the simulation is verified by comparing with the experimental results the free vibration. Also, an experiment on the forced vibration is performed to determine the damping ratio of the exhaust sysetm. Estimated model parameters(natural frequency, mode shape) are in accord with the experimental results. Because the method merely repeats the transpose and inverse operations of a matrix, the solution is extremely easy and simple. Moreover, it is more accurate than the existing methods in that there is no artificial assumptions in the calculation processes. Therefore, the method is found to be reliable for the analysis of the exhaust system considering the characteristics of vibrations. Although the suggested method is tested by only the exhaust system here, it can be applied to general structures.

SCAM 기상모델의 성능향상을 위한 LAPACK BLAS 라이브러리의 활용 (Performance Improvements of SCAM Climate Model using LAPACK BLAS Library)

  • 슈퍼 컴퓨팅 기술 및 하드웨어 기술의 발달로 수치 연산 방식 또한 고도화되고 있다. 그에 따라 이전 대비 향상된 기상 예측 또한 가능해진다. 본 논문에서는 SCAM(Single-Columns Atmospheric Model, CESM(Community Earth System Model)을 간소화 한 버전)에 포함되어 있으며 대기 연산을 수행하는 적운 모수화 코드, Unicon(A Unified Convection Scheme)의 성능을 향상하기 위하여 소스 코드 내의 선형대수 수치적 연산 부분에 고밀도 선형대수 연산을 위한 라이브러리인 LAPACK(Linear Algebra PACKage) BLAS(Basic Linear Algebra Subprograms)의 level1 함수를 적용할 것을 제안한다. 이를 분석하기 위하여 SCAM의 전체적인 실행 구조도를 제시하고 해당 실행환경에서 테스트를 진행하였다. 기존 소스 코드 대비 SCOPY 함수는 0.4053%, DSCAL 함수는 0.7812%, DDOT 함수는 0.0469%의 성능 향상을 이끌어 내었으며 이를 모두 적용한 결과 기존 소스 코드 대비 0.8537%의 성능 향상을 보였다. 이는 본 논문에서 제안한 고밀도 선형대수 연산을 위한 라이브러리인 LAPACK BLAS 적용 방법이 동일한 CPU 환경에서 추가적인 하드웨어의 개입 없이 성능을 향상시킬 수 있음을 의미한다.

Model Predictive Control for Productions Systems Based on Max-plus Algebra

  • Among the state-space description of discrete vent systems, the max-plus algebra is known as one of the effective approach. This paper proposes a model predictive control (MPC) design method based on the max-plus algebra. Several studies related to these topics have been done so far under the constraints that system parameters are constant. However, in practical systems such as production systems, it is common and sometimes inevitable that system parameters vary by each event. Therefore, it is of worth to design a new MPC controller taking account of adjustable system parameters. In this paper, we formulate system parameters as adjustable ones, and they are solved by a linear programing method. Since MPC determines optimal control input considering future reference signals, the controller can be more robust and the operation cost can be reduced. Finally, the proposed method is applied to a production system with three machines, and the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through a numerical simulation.

  • We consider a discrete event dynamic system called periodic job shop, where an identical mixture of items called minimal part set(MPS) is repetitively produced in the same processing order and the primary performance measure is the cycle time. The precedence relationships among events(starts of operations) are represented by a directed graph with rocurront otructure. When each operation starts as soon as all its preceding operations complete(called earliest starting), the occurrences of events are modeled in a linear system using a special algebra called minimax algebra. By investigating the eigenvalues and the eigenvectors, we develop conditions on the directed graph for which a stable steady state or a finite eigenvector exists. We demonstrate that each finite eigenvector, characterized as a finite linear combination of a class of eigenvalue, is the minimum among all the feasible schedules and an identical schedule pattern repeats every MPS. We develop an efficient algorithm to find a schedule among such schedules that minimizes a secondary performance measure related to work-in-process inventory. As a by-product of the linear system approach, we also propose a way of characterizing stable steady states of a class of discrete event dynamic systems.

선형대수학의 두 가지 기원적 개념 (Two original concepts in linear algebra)

  • 오늘날 선형대수학은 이론의 기초적 성격과 응용의 풍부성으로 인해 대학수학에 있어서 필수적인 분야로서 자리하고 있다. 하지만 선형대수학의 기계적인 계산위주나 딱딱한 형식적 개념위주의 학습으로 인해 학생들은 종종 큰 벽에 부딪치게 되고 심한 경우에는 수학자체에 흥미를 잃기도 한다. 따라서 선형대수학을 성공적으로 가르치는 것은 매우 중요한 문제이다. 이 문제를 해결하기 위한 방안으로 본 논문에서는 학생의 입장에서 선형대수학에 기원적 개념의 도입을 제안한다 기원적 개념이란 역사적 순서나 이론적 체계에 있어서 실제 출발점이 되면서 선형대수학의 중요한 개념들을 이끌어낼 수 있는 씨앗역할을 하는 개념을 의미한다. 여기서는 선형대수학의 두 가지 기원적 개념을 제시한다. 하나는 평면과 공간의 기하학이며, 다른 하나는 1차(선형대수)방정식이다. 전자가 기원적 개념이 되는 것은 [2]에 의거하며 여기서는 1차 방정식이 또 다른 기원적 개념임을 보인다.

Monitoring and Scheduling Methods for MIMO-FIFO Systems Utilizing Max-Plus Linear Representation

  • This paper proposes an approach to monitoring and scheduling methods for repetitive MIMO-FIFO DESs. We use max-plus algebra for modeling and formulation, known as an effective approach for controller design for this type of system. Because a certain type of linear equations in max-plus algebra can represent the system's behavior, the principal concerns in past researches were how to solve the equations. However, the researches focused mainly on analyses of the relation between inputs and outputs of the system, which implies that the changes or the slacks of internal states were not clarified well. We first examine several properties of the corresponding state variables, which contribute to finding and tracing the float times in each process. Moreover, we provide a rescheduling method that can take into account delays or changes of the internal states. These methods would be useful in schedule control or progress management.

New Learning Environment of Linear Algebra in Korea

  • We are introducing a new learning environment for linear algebra at Sungkyunkwan University, and this is changing our teaching methods. Korea's e-Campus Vision 2007 is a program begun in 2003, to equip lecture rooms with projection equipment, View cam, tablet PC and internet D-base. Now our linear algebra classes at Sungkyunkwan University can be taught in a modem learning environment. Lectures can easily being recorded and students can review them right after class. At Sungkyunkwan University almost $100\%$ of all large and medium size lecture rooms have been remodeled by Mar. 2005 and are in use. We introduce this system in detail and how this learning environment changed our teaching method. Analysis of the positive effect will be added.
