This paper presents a design approach for passive vibration control to reduce vertical vibrations transmitted to the control unit during hovering flight of a quadrotor drone. Ground vibration test simulation based on finite element model was performed for forced vibration analysis of the quadrotor drone. First, modal analysis was performed to evaluate dynamic characteristics. Forced vibration response analysis was then performed to obtain the steady-state response within the operating frequency range under the hovering flight condition. Furthermore, to obtain the vibration reduction effect, a viscous damping tape was applied at positions that could induce vibrations transmitted to the control unit under the same conditions. Such a passive vibration control approach was investigated. Relevant vibration reduction effect was assessed with respect to the application of damping materials and the attachment position.

The calculation of torsional vibration for marine diesel engine propulsion shafting is normally carried out by equalizing exciting energy to damping energy, or using the dynamic magnifier. But, with these methods, the vibration amplitudes are calculated only for resonance points and vibration amplitudes of other running speeds of engine are determined by the estimation. Recently, many energy-saving ships have been built and on these ships, two-stroke, supercharged, super-long stroke diesel engines which have a small number of cylinders are usually installed. In these cases, the first order critical-torsional vibrations of these engine shaftings appear ordinarily near the MCR speed and the stress amplitudes of their vibration skirts exceed the limit stress defined by the rules of classification society. To predict the above condition in the design stage, the synthesized vibration amplitudes of all orders which are summed up according to their phase angles must be calculated from the drawings of propulsion shaft systems. In this study, a theoretical method to fulfill the above calculation is derived and a computer program is developed according to the derived method. And a shafting system of two-stroke, super-long stroke diesel engine which was installed in a bulk carrier is analyzed with this method. The measured values of this engine shafting are compared with those of calculated results and they show a fairly good agreement.

This paper reports on a proof-of-concept experimental investigation focused on evaluating the vibration characteristics and control of smart hollow cantilever beams filled with an electro-rheological(ER) fluid. The beams are considered to be of uniform viscoelastic materials and modelled as a viscously-damped harmonic oscillator. Electric field-dependent natural frequencies, loss factors and complex moduli are evaluated and compared among three different beams : two types of different volume fraction of ER fluid and one type of different particle concentration of ER fluid by weight. Modal characteristics of the beams are observed in both the absence and the presence of electric potentials. It is also shown that by constructing active control algorithm the removal of structural resonances and the suppression of tip deflection are obtained. This result provides the feasiblility of ER fluids as an active vibration control element.

A method has been developed to tune the static stiffness at a rotation joint considering the whole machine tool system by interactive use of finite element method and experiment. This paper describes the procedure of this method and shows the results. The method uses the static experiment on measurement model which is set-up so that the effects of uncertain factors can be excluded. For FEM simulation, the rotation joint model is simplified using only spindle, bearing and spring. At the rotation joint, the damping coefficient is ignored, The spindle and bearing is connected by only spring. By static experiment, 500 N is forced to the front and behind portion of spindle and the deformation is measured by capacitive sensor. The deformation by FEM simulation is extracted with changing the static stiffness from the initial static stiffness considering only rotation joint. The tuning static stiffness is obtained by exploring the static stiffness directly trusting the deformation from the static experiment. Finally, the general tuning method of the static stiffness of machine tool joint is proposed using the force stream and the modal analysis of machine tool.

This paper describes the time rate of change of dynamic response of a cantilever beam inserted with a damping element, such as bonding, which is excited under a general force at various locations. A sensitivity analysis was performed in a finite element model to show that two types of second-order algebraic governing equations were used to predict the rate of change of dynamic displacement: one is related to the modal coordinate linked to a physical coordinate, and the other to the design parameter of the time rate of change of displacement. The sensitivity differential equation formulation includes more complicated terms compared with that of the undamped cantilever beam. The sensitivities of the dynamic response were observed by changing the location of the excitation force, displacement extraction, and cross-sectional area of the beam. The analytical results obtained by this suggested theory showed a relatively good agreement when compared with those obtained using the commercial finite element program. The suggested analysis procedure enables the prediction of the response sensitivity for any finite element model of the dynamic system.
The negative stiffness of an active or semi-active damper system has been proven to be very effective in reducing dynamic response. Therefore, energy dissipation devices possessing negative stiffness, such as viscous inertial mass dampers (VIMDs), have drawn much attention recently. The control performance of the VIMD for cable vibration mitigation has already been demonstrated by many researchers. In this paper, a new optimal design procedure for VIMD parameters for taut cable vibration control is presented based on the fixed-points method originally developed for tuned mass damper design. A model consisting of a taut cable and a VIMD installed near a cable end is studied. The frequency response function (FRF) of the cable under a sinusoidal load distributed proportionally to the mode shape is derived. Then, the fixed-points method is applied to the FRF curves. The performance of a VIMD with the optimal parameters is subsequently evaluated through simulations. A taut cable model with a tuned VIMD is established for several cases of external excitation. The performance of VIMDs using the proposed optimal parameters is compared with that in the literature. The results show that cable vibration can be significantly reduced using the proposed optimal VIMD with a relatively small amount of damping. Multiple VIMDs are applied effectively to reduce the cable vibration with multi-modal components.

In the Pohang Earthquake in 2017, considerable damage to non-structural elements, such as ceiling systems, exterior finishes, and curtain walls, was reported; thus, the seismic designs of non-structural elements are important. In this study, the modal characteristics of a ceiling system were investigated through the impact hammer test. The frequency and damping ratio according to the length of the hanger bolt were identified. In addition, collision experiments were conducted to obtain the impact duration for exactly considering the impact effects of the ceiling against a wall or other adjacent elements. Based on the identified dynamics and impact duration of the ceiling system, the seismic responses of the ceiling system were obtained numerically in case of collision. Numerical simulation results show that the impact load tends to increase with the clearance between the ceiling and adjacent elements, and is not correlated with the length of the hanger bolt.

Dynamic response measurements from natural excitation were carried out for three 18-story office buildings to determine their inherent properties. The beam-column frame system was adopted as a typical structural form, but a core wall was added to resist the lateral force more effectively, resulting in a mixed configuration. To extract modal parameters such as natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios from a series of vibration records at each floor, the most advanced operational system identification methods based on frequency- and time-domain like FDD, pLSCF and SSI were applied. Extracted frequencies and mode shapes from the different identification methods showed a greater consistency for three buildings, however the three lower frequencies extracted were 1.2 to 1.7 times as stiff as those obtained using the initial FE models. Comparing the extracted fundamental periods with those estimated from the code equations and FE analysis, the FE analysis results showed the most flexible behavior, and the most simple equation that considers the building height as the only parameter correlated fairly well with test results. It is recognized that such a discrepancy arises from the fact that the present tests exclude the stiffness decreasing factors like concrete cracking, while the FE models ignore the stiffness increasing factors, such as the contribution of non-structural elements and the actual material properties used.
The small turbocharger for the automotive application is designed to operate up to 200,000 rpm to increase system efficiency. Because of high rotation speed of turbocharger, floating ring bearing are widely adopted due to its low friction loss and high rotordynamic stability. This paper presents a linear and nonlinear analysis model for a turbocharger rotor supported by a semi-floating ring bearing. The rotordynamic model for the turbocharger rotor was constructed based on the finite element method and fluid film forces were calculated based on the infinitely short bearing assumption. In linear analysis, we considered fluid film force as stiffness and damping element and in nonlinear analysis, the fluid film force was calculated by solving the time dependent Reynolds equation. We verified the developed theoretical model by comparing to modal test results of test rotors. The analysis results show that there are two unstable modes, which are conical and cylindrical modes. These unstable modes appear as sub-synchronous vibrations in nonlinear analysis. In nonlinear analysis, frequency jump phenomenon demonstrated when vibration mode is changed from conical mode to cylindrical one. This jump phenomenon was also demonstrated in the test. However, the natural frequency measured in the test differs from those obtained using nonlinear analysis.

By applying METHOD 514.8 of the US military standard MIL-STD-810H, vibration analysis of the winding core automatic feeding device was performed during vehicle transportation. The contact point between the LM guide and main support frame was weak in the vertical axis, transverse axis, and longitudinal axis during the transportation of the automatic winding core feeder vehicle, and the maximum equivalent stress was 236.31 MPa in the longitudinal axis. When random vibration was applied, the safety margin in the longitudinal direction was 0.26, indicating low safety. The safety margin was changed by increasing the damage factor to 0.1. Finally, the safety margin was improved to 3.48 to secure safety. Resonance occurred with a Q factor of 9.34 in the harmonic response to which the RMS value of the ASD data was input, and the vertical axis safety margin was derived as 0.16. When the damping factor was 0.15, the Q factor was 3.37, and resonance was avoided with a safety margin of 6.62.
