Effects of Different Fiber Content of Rice on Blood Glucose and Triglyceride Levels in Normal Subject (식이섬유함량이 다른 쌀이 정상인의 혈당과 중성지방에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to determine the effect of different fiber content of rice on blood levels of glucose insulin and triglyceride in normal subject. Ilpum and Suwon 464, which have different fiber content were used for the test. Two types of rice containing 50 g of carbohydrate were pressure-cooked and fed to ten healthy male volunteers after an overnight fast. After a meal, the 60-min blood glucose levels of Suwon 464 and Ilpum were 90.3$\pm$4.8 mg/dL and 111.6$\pm$2.7 mg/dL, respectively (p<0.01). And the 120-min blood insulin levels of Suwon 464 and IlPum were 2.9$\pm$0.8 mg/dL and 7.7$\pm$1.6 mg/dL, respectively (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in triglyceride level between two rice varieties. The calculated glycemic index (GI) was 64.5% for Suwon 464, suggesting that Suwon 464 high in fiber can be useful in low-GI diets.

  • Effort of rice resistant starch (RS) content on glucose blood level of normal Subject was examined using Suwon 464 and Ilpum, haying different RS contents. Enzymatic-gravimetric method showed RS contents of Suwon 464 and Ilpum were 16.3 and 0.7%, respectively. Both rice varieties, each containing 50g carbohydrate, were pressure-cooked and fed to ten healthy male volunteers after overnight fast. Significant difference was observed in 60 min blood glucose levels of Suwon 464 and Ilpum after meal, showing $90.3{\pm}4.8$ and $111.6{\pm}2.7mg/dl$, respectively (p<0.01).

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of dietary fiber content of rice on the postprandial serum glucose and insulin responses in normal subject. Two rice varieties, Ilpum and Suwon 464 which are different in dietary fiber content, were cooked in pressure cooker and used for the test. The rice with a higher dietary fiber content gave a significantly lower glucose level (p<0.01) and insulin level (p<0.05) than did the normal rice variety. After a meal, the 60-min glucose levels of Suwon 464 and Ilpum were 90.3${\pm}$4.8mg/dl and 111.6${\pm}$2.7mg/dl, respectively. The glycemic index (GI) of Suwon 464 shows 64.5%, which was apparently lower than that of Ilpum. These results indicate that Suwon 464 high in dietary fiber can be useful in low-GI diets.

Supplementary Effect of the High Dietary Fiber Rice on Blood Glucose in Diabetic KK Mice (고식이섬유쌀의 급여가 KK 당뇨 마우스의 혈당에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the supplementary effects of Suwon 464, which has over two times of dietary fiber content compared with normal rice (Ilpum), on blood glucose in diabetic mice. We supplied 5 kinds of experimental diets (corn starch diet as a control (CO), Ilpum polished rice diet (IP), Ilpum brown rice diet (IB), polished rice diet (SP) and brown rice diet (SB) of Suwon 464) to diabetic mice for 8 weeks, after analyzing dietary fiber contents of 5 experimental diets. Diet intake, body weight and contents of blood glucose, hemoglobin $A_{lc}$ and insulin were measured. The dietary fiber contents in CO, IP, IB, SP, and SB diets were 1.0, 1.2, l.4, l.4, and 2.0% respectively. Body weight was lower in SB group than the other groups though there was no significant difference in diet intake among experimental groups. The concentration of blood glucose in diabetic mice was lower in SB group than the other groups during the supplementary period of experimental diets. The hemoglobin Ale and serum insulin levels were lower in SP and SB groups. These results suggested that the brown rice of Suwon 464 with high dietary fiber can control diabetes in diabetic mice by reducing the blood glucose and hemoglobin Ale.   • This study was conducted to investigate the supplementary effects of Suwon 464 developed by Rural Development Administration, which has over two times of dietary fiber content compared with normal rice (Ilpum), on lipid metabolism in diabetic mice. We supplied 5 kinds of experimental diets (com starch diet as a control (CO), Ilpum polished rice diet (IP), Ilpum brown rice diet (IB), polished rice diet (SP) and brown rice diet (SB) of Suwon 464) to diabetic mice for 8 weeks, after analyzing dietary fiber contents of 5 experimental diets. Diet intake, body weight, organ weights, and lipids levels of serum, liver and feces were measured. The dietary fiber contents in CO, IP, IB, SP, and SB diets were 1.0, 1.2, l.4, 1.4, and 2.0% respectively. Body weight and liver and epididymal fat pad weights were lower in SB group than the other groups though there was no significant difference in diet intake among experimental groups. The concentrations of serum triglyceride was lower in SP and SB groups than CO and IP groups. The levels of hepatic total lipid and total cholesterol were significantly lower in SP and SB groups than CO group, and the level of hepatic triglyceride was lower in IB, SP and SB groups than CO group. The levels of total lipid and triglyceride excreted in feces were higher in IB, SP and SB, and the level of total cholesterol in feces was higher in SP and SB groups than CO group. These results suggested that the high dietary fiber rice (Suwon 464) decrease the triglyceride or total cholesterol concentrations of serum and liver by increasing of fecal lipid excretion in diabetic mice. Effects of Ti-capping Layers on the Thermal Stability of NiSi (Ti-capping층이 NiSi의 열적안정성에 미치는 영향)

  • Ni and Ti films were deposited by the thermal evaporator, and then annealed in the N$_2$ ambient at 300-80$0^{\circ}C$ in a RTA(rapid thermal annealing) system. Four point probe, AEM, FESEM, AES, and XPS were used to study the effects of Ti-capping layers on the thermal stability of NiSi thin films. The Ti-capped NiSi was stable up to $700^{\circ}C$ for 100 sec. RTA, while the uncapped NiSi layers showed high sheet resistance after $600^{\circ}C$. These results were due to that the Ni in-diffusion and Si out-diffusion were retarded by the capping layer, resulting in the suppression of the formation of NiSi$_2$and Si grains at the surface.

Studies on the Tobacco Growth Characteristics under Environmental Conditions between KOREA and U.S.A. (한국과 미국의 재배환경 요인과 담배생육비교)

  • To find main factors to affect tobacco culture and quality, NC 2326 (Nicotiana tabacum L.) was cultivated in Korea and in the United States under different plant density, fertilization, mulching and curing. Among the chemical characteristics of the both experimental soils, the organic matters were similar concentration in both locations but effective phosphorous contents were higher in Oxford in the United States. Plant height, length and width of the largest leaf, leaf thickness, and midrib ratios were larger in Oxford than in Suwon in Korea. Also they were larger in non mulching system than in mulching system. But the total numbers of the leaves were decreased in non mulching system. The content of nicotine was higher in the plant grown in Suwon than in Oxford. The concentrations of nicotine and sugar tend to increase in mulching system comparing of non mulching system. During the growing, the concentration of non-volatile organic acids was higher in Suwon, while it was lower in cured leaf produced in Suwon. Also the contents of total fatty acids were lower in the harvested leaf grown in Suwon, but not in cured tobacco. Forty three compounds identified among the volatile oils from these experimental samples were quantified. The concentrations of the major components related to the tobacco flavour such as damascone, damascenone, solanone, nor-solanadione, and megastigmatrienones were higher in the cured tobacco produced in Oxford rather than in Suwon.

Effects of Skipping Breakfast on Nutrition Status, Fatigue Level, and Attention Level among Middle School Students in Gyunggi Province, Korea (아침 결식이 경기지역 남녀 중학생의 영양섭취상태, 피로자각도 및 주의집중력에 미치는 영향)

  • Eating breakfast provides crucial nutrition for brain function and helps promote overall health. It is especially critical in growing adolescents, as it is known to form good eating habits and better study habits. This study investigated the effects of skipping breakfast on nutritional state, fatigue level, and attention level. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2010 on total of 828 adolescents composed of 414 boys and 414 girls. Students who ate breakfast never to twice per week were placed in the breakfast-skipper group while students who ate breakfast more than five times per week were included in the breakfast-eater group. Students performed a self-reported questionnaire on food behaviors, amount of food consumption, fatigue level, attention deficient hyperactivity disease (ADHD) level by Conners-Wells' Adolescent Self-Report Scales, depression scale, and self-esteem level. Statistical analysis was conducted using the SAS program (version 9.1). A total of 135 boys (32.6%) and 138 girls (33.3%) were included in the breakfast-skipper group, whereas 241 boys (58.2%) and 223 girls (53.9%) were included in the breakfast-eater group. The breakfast-skipper group showed irregular food behaviors and lacked nutrients. Specifically, energy (p< .001), protein (p< .001), dietary fiber (p< .001), calcium (p< .01), vitamin A (p< .01), thiamin (p< .05), niacin (p< .001) levels in boy breakfast-skippers were statistically lower compared to boy breakfast-eaters. Intakes of all nutrients except fat in girl breakfast-skippers were statistically lower than in girl breakfast-eaters. Girl breakfast-skippers (41.3%) showed significantly higher fatigue risks compared to girl breakfast-eaters (21.5%). Low attention level was also observed only in girls in the breakfast-skipping group. Moreover, students in the breakfast-skipper group showed higher scores for depression and low self-esteem (p< .001). In conclusion, skipping breakfast has effects on young adolescents' nutrition, manifesting as high fatigue level and low attention level, especially in girls.

Root vs. Shoot Genotype Effects on Growth Characters and Seed to Pod-Shell Ratio in Grafted Soybean Plants (콩 유전자형간 상호접목이 지상부 생육과 협실비율에 미치는 영향)

  • The partitioning of dry matter into seed and pod-shell is important because yield increase can be achieved by improving the distribution rate of assimilation products to seeds. The present study was undertaken to characterize whether the partitioning of dry matter into seed was shoot- or root-controlled through graftiong techniques. Self- and reciprocal-grafts were made among four soybean genotypes, which were 'Baekunkong', 'Suwon 168', and two local soybeans with black seed coat (hereafter referred to as the 'black soybean'), 'Kangleungjarae' and 'Keumleungjarae'. Self-grafted black soybeans showed lower ratio of seed to pod-shell dry wight than self-grafted Baekunkong and Suwon 168. Varying the shoot genotypes in grafts resulted in significant differences in growth characters as well as pod and seed dry weight per plant at physiological maturity. There were significant effects of shoot genotypes on the ratio of seed to pod-shell dry weight, indication that the partitioning of dry matter into seed and pod-shell should be shoot- rather than root-controlled. The grafts with large pod-shell dry weight tended to partition relatively smaller dry matter into seed than pod-shell.

Analysis of the current status of oral health guidance in community children's centers (지역아동센터교사들의 구강보건 지도현황 분석)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the oral health programs for children of the low income classes in order to prevent oral health problems and to provide the effective oral health programs in community children's centers. Methods : The subjects were 464 teachers in community children's centers in Seoul, Incheon, Gyeonggi-do, Chungcheongbuk-do, and Jeollabuk-do. Results : There were differences between the regions(p<0.05) in oral health guidance among teachers in municipal and provincial community children's centers. The oral health education was considered as the most important thing in those who had more than 6 years career(71.8%), and followed by those having less than five years career(61.3%) and those having two years career(53.8%)(p<0.05). Although many children registered the program and newsletter was sent to the children's homes, but 70% of the children did not brush their teeth regularly(p<0.05). Regardless of region, gender, teaching career, and number of enrolled children, 90 percent or more people found that it necessary for community children's centers to collaborate with dental clinics. There were gender differences between the male and female(p<0.05). Male accounted for 42.4% response rate and female accounted for 36.4%. Approximately About 48.5% of male and 61.6% of female thought that the oral health program is the most important thing(p<0.05). Conclusions : The development of the customized oral health program is the most critical factor to the oral health behavior change in the children in the community children's centers and public dental clinics.
