  • Density functional theory was adopted to study the various surface products and their reaction channels focusing on the on-dimer configuration which has not been suggested before. Energetic results show that the most stable on-dimer configuration is the 6,6-[2+2] structure which resembles the typical [2+2] cycloaddition product. The 6,6-[2+2] product is also more stable than any other possible surface structures of inter-dimer configuration further suggesting its existence. Potential energy surface scan along various possible initial surface reactions show that some of the possible on-dimer surface products require virtually no reaction barrier indicating that initial population of on-dimer surface products is thermodynamically determined. Various surface isomerization reaction channels exist further facilitating thermal redistribution of the initial surface products.

  • Process planning is a key feature that an intelligent CAD/CAM system should possess. In this paper, we address the problem of determinig process configuration to manufacture the free surfaces. For analyzing the surface, the method of surface subdivision is used. The developed algorithm evaluates the processability of the given surface by applying the three/four/five-axes procedures sequentially. To illustrate and test the developed algorithm, numerical simulations are presented.

  • The electrical repulsive energy between two model cylinders was calculated by solving nonlinear Poission- Boltzmann (P-B) equation under Derjaguin approximation. Effects of the surface potential, Debye screening length, and configuration of cylinders on the repulsive interaction energy were examined. Due to the anisotropy of the shape of cylinder, the interaction repulsive energy showed dependence to the configuration of particles; cylinders aligned in end-to-end configuration showed largest repulsive energy and crossed particles had lowest interaction energy. The configuration effect is originated from the curvature effect of the interacting surfaces. The curved surfaces showed less repulsive energy than flat surfaces at the same interacting surface area. The configuration dependency of interaction energy agreed with the previous analytical solution obtained under the linearized P-B equation. The approach and results present in this report would be applicable in predicting colloidal behavior of cylindrical particles.

  • This paper reports a characteristic motion of a polarity inversion line (PIL) formed at the solar surface, which is newly found by performing a three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulation of flux emergence in the Sun. A magnetic flux tube composed of twisted field lines is assumed to emerge below the surface, forming a bipolar region with a PIL at the surface. A key finding is the successive half-turn rotation of the PIL, leading to the formation of a quadrupolar-like region at the surface and a magnetic configuration in the corona; this configuration is reminiscent of, but essentially different from the so-called inverse-polarity configuration of a filament magnetic field. We discuss a physical mechanism for producing the half-turn rotation of a PIL, which gives new insights into the magnetic structure formed via flux emergence. This presents a reasonable explanation of the configuration of a filament magnetic field suggested by observations.

  • This paper presents the numerical algorithm that can obtain the surface configuration of the magnetic fluid seals. The magnetic field is computed by nonlinear finite element method considering the saturation of magnetic fluid and pole piece. The surface equilibrium condition in ferrohydrodynamics are used in algorithm. The influence of the surface configuration on the sealed pressure due to the magnetic, centrifugal and gravitational forces is analyzed and compared with other experimental results.

  • In this study, dry and wet surface pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics of heat exchangers having plain fins were investigated. Nine samples having different fin pitches and rows were tested. The wet surface heat transfer coefficient was reduced from experimental data using enthalpy-potential method. The wet surface heat transfer coefficients were approximately equal to the dry surface values except for one row configuration. For one row configuration, the wet surface heat transfer coefficients were approximately $30\%$ lower than the dry surface values. For the pressure drop, the wet surface yielded approximately $30\%$ higher values compared with the dry surface counterpart. Data were compared with existing correlations.

  • The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of surface defects and cross-sectional configuration of NiTi rotary files on the fatigue life under cyclic loading. Three NiTi rotary files ($K3^{TM},{\;}ProFile^{\circledR},{\;}and{\;}HERO{\;}642^{\circledR}$) with #30/.04 taper were evaluated. Each rotary file was divided into 2 subgroups : control (no surface defects) and experimental group (artificial surface defects), A total of six groups of each 10 were tested. The NiTi rotary files were rotated at 300rpm using the apparatus which simulated curved canal (40 degree of curvature) until they fracture. The number of cycles to fracture was calculated and the fractured surfaces were observed with a scanning electron microscope. The data were analyzed statistically. The results showed that experimental groups with surface defects had lower number of cycles to fracture than control group but there was only a statistical significance between control and experimental group in the $K3^{TM}$ (p<0.05), There was no strong correlation between the cross-sectional configuration area and fracture resistance under experimental conditions. Several of fractured files demonstrated characteristic patterns of brittle fracture consistent with the propagation of pre-existing cracks. This data indicate that surface defects of NiTi rotary files may significantly decrease fatigue life and it may be one possible factor for early fracture of NiTi rotary files in clinical practice.

  • The expansion of near shore aquaculture is feasibility of moving aquaculture facilities into the open ocean. Numerical modeling technique using finite element method was used to enable the optimum design and evaluation of submersible aquaculture cage system. The characteristics of mooring loads response in mooring lines under waves and current and their response amplitude operators were calculated for single and three point mooring configuration at the surface condition and submerged one. The static mooring loads without wave and current loading were similar for both the surface and submerged configuration. It was calculated that three point mooring was more adequate than single point mooring for the mooring configuration of submersible aquaculture cage system. The wave induced response amplitude operators for the single point mooring configuration with the influence of currents were identical to those without the influence of currents.

  • In order to rpovide proper SMT design criteria in a systematic way, a mathematical formulation has been developed to predict the configuration of the solder fillet formed between the gullwing type lead and rectangular pad. Effects of SMT design parameters such as the solder volume and pad dimension on the solder profile are investigated using the FEM that calculates the 3D configuration by minimizing the energy due to surface tension and gravity in the equilibrium state. Design criteria of QFP and SOP are illustrated by plotting the acceptable range of the solder volume with respect to the length and width ratios of the pad and lead. The results show that the acceptable design range increases with increase in the pad length and width. The pad length has more significant effects on design criteria compared with the pad width, and Bond number can be utilized to predict the joint quality.
