  • This study discusses frequency analysis based on autoregressive (AR) time series model, and the characterization of surface quality in orthogonal cutting of a fiber-matrix composite materials. A sparsely distributed idealized composite material, namely a glass reinforced polyester (GFRP) was used as workpiece. Analysis method employs a force sensor and the signals from the sensor are processed using AR time series model. The experimental correlations between the fiber pull-out and AR model coefficients are then established.

  • An attempt is made to characterize and synthesize engineered surfaces. The proposed method is not only an analytical tool to characterize but also to generate/synthesize three-dimensional surfaces. The developed method expresses important engineered surface characteristics such as the autocorrelation or power spectrum density functions in terms of the two-dimensional autoregressive coefficients.

  • Chemical modification of porous silicon surface has been investigated to have different physical surface properties. Porous silicon modified with dodecyl functionality exhibits hydrophobic feature, however the oxidation of porous silicon to modify with hydroxyl group displays hydrophilic properties. Surface characterization for both dodecyl and hydroxyl derivatized porous silicon was investigated by FT-IR spectroscopy. To determine the surface coverage, the amine functionalized surface was reduced by dithiothreitol (DTT) and the released 2-thiopyridone was quantified by UV/vis spectroscopy.

  • In this study, cerium nitrate was used as an alternative to chromate for the surface-treatment of Al coated steel to improve the corrosion resistance. The surface of Al coated steel was characterized by means of a X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS). It was found that cerium on the surface of Al coated steel had a mixture of oxidation states such as Ce(+4) and Ce(+3), and the relative concentration of each state was 57 % and 43 %, respectively. The surface film consisting of these cerium compounds played an important role for achieving the corrosion resistance of Al coated steel.
