In measuring step for reverse engineering of sculptured surfaces, computer vision system is used to simplify the complicated surface by boundary edge detection method that minimizes the measuring error. The measured data by Coordinate measuring machine is clouded data points of surfaces which is segmented surface using image process. In this research, the measured data is approximated as NURBS surfaces by new suggested algorithm. The position and number of control points, selection of parametric values and compensation of weight factors are proposed. Finally, surface model is simulated and improved resulting performance is obtained.
The Accuracy of a free-form artifact is affected by machine tool errors, machining process errors, environmental causes and other uncertainty. This paper deals with methodological approach about machine tool errors that are defined the relationship between CMM and OMM inspections of the free-form artifact. In order to analyze the measurement data, Reverse engineering was used. In other words, Surface of Free-Form Artifact is generated by NURBS surface approximation method. Finally, Volumetric error map is made to compare surface of CMM data with that of OMM data.
In general, the radial error motion of a machine tool spindle system is effected on the accuracy of the parts to be made. This paper presents in milling process an investigation into spindle rotational accuracy effects on surface roughness of processing parts. We experimented the effects on spindle rotational accuracy in milling process by cutting AL 7075 workpiece at various rotational speed. In order to analyze the effects of rotational accuracy on surface roughness, we proposed the method using iSIGHT's RBF Approximation. The proposed method can be used fur anticipating the surface roughness when some spindle rotational accuracy experiments could be done in milling process.
This paper presents a robust and computationally efficient optimal design algorithm for electromagnetic devices by combining an adaptive response surface approximation of the objective function and($1+{\lambda}$) evolution strategy. In the adaptive response surface approximation, the design space is successively reduced with the iteration, and Pareto-optimal sampling points are generated by using Latin hypercube design with the Max Distance and Min Distance criteria. The proposed algorithm is applied to an analytic example and TEAM problem 22, and its robustness and computational efficiency are investigated.
This paper presents a simple method for relieving the ambiguity problems within the sub-voxel based surface-fitting approach for the surface construction. ECB algorithm is proposed to avoid the ambiguity problem which is the root of the holes within the resulting polygon based approximation. The basic idea of our disambiguation strategy is the use of a set of predefined modeling primitives (we call SMP) which guarantees the topological consistency of resulted surface polygons. 20 SMPs are derived from the extension of the concept of the elementary modeling primitives in the CB algorithm [3], and fit one to five faces of them to the iso-surface crossing a cell with no further processing. A look-up table which has a surface triangle list is pre-calculated using these 20 SMPs. All of surface triangles in the table are from the faces of SMPs and are stored in the form of edge list on which vertices of each surface triangle are located. The resulted polygon based approximation is unique at every threshold value and its validity is guaranteed without considering the complicated problems such as average of density and postprocessing. ECB algorithm could be free from the need for the time consuming post-processing, which eliminates holes by revisiting every boundary cell. Through three experiments of surface construction from volume data, its capability of hole avoidance is showed.
Catmull-Clark subdivision scheme provides a powerful method for building smooth and complex surfaces. But the number of faces in the uniformly refined meshes increases exponentially with respect to subdivision depth. Adaptive tessellation reduces the number of faces needed to yield a smooth approximation to the limit surface and, consequently, makes the rendering process more efficient. In this paper, we present a new adaptive tessellation method for general Catmull-Clark subdivision surfaces. Different from previous control mesh refinement based approaches, which generate approximate meshes that usually do not interpolate the limit surface, the new method is based on direct evaluation of the limit surface to generate an inscribed polyhedron of the limit surface. With explicit evaluation of general Catmull-Clark subdivision surfaces becoming available, the new adaptive tessellation method can precisely measure error for every point of the limit surface. Hence, it has complete control of the accuracy of the tessellation result. Cracks are avoided by using a recursive color marking process to ensure that adjacent patches or subpatches use the same limit surface points in the construction of the shared boundary. The new method performs limit surface evaluation only at points that are needed for the final rendering process. Therefore it is very fast and memory efficient. The new method is presented for the general Catmull-Clark subdivision scheme. But it can be used for any subdivision scheme that has an explicit evaluation method for its limit surface.
The light-weight design of UTM (Urban Transit Maglev)-02 car-body frames are performed, based on initial configuration. The thicknesses of fourteen sub-structures are defined as design variables and the loading condition is considered according to weight of sub-structures, electronic and pneumatic modules and passengers. For efficient and robust process of design optimization, objective function and constraints are approximated by response surface approximation. Structural analysis is performed at some sampling points to construct the approximated objective function and constraints composed of design variables. Design space is changed to find many optimal candidates and best optimal design can be found eventually. The Matlab Optimization Toolbox is used to find optimal value and sensitivity analysis about each design variable is also performed.
Accuracy of a machined part is determined by the relative motion between the cutting tool and the workpiece. One of the important factors which affects the relative motion is the geometric errors of a machine tool. In this study, firstly, geometric errors are measured by laser interferometer, and the positioning error of each control point selected uniformly on the control surface CAD model can be estimated from th oirm shaping model and geometric error data base. Where a form shaping function is derived from the link of homogeneous transformation matrix. Secondly, control points are shifted to the estimated amount of positioning errors. A new control surface is modeled with NURBS(Non Uniform Rational B-Spline) surface approximation to the shifted control points. By generating tool paths to the redesigned control surface, we reduce the machining error quite.
For integrity analysis of nuclear reactor pressure vessel, including the Pressurized thermal shock analysis, the fast and accurate calculation of the stress intensity factor at the crack tip is needed. For this, a simple approximation scheme is developed and the resulting stress intensity factors for axial semi-elliptical cracks in cylindrical vessel under various loading conditions are compared with those of the finite element method and other approximation methods, such as Raju-Newman's equation and ASME Sec. Xl approach. For these, three-dimensional finite-element analyses are performed to obtain the stress intensity factors for various surface cracks with t/R = 0.1. The approximation methods, incorporated in VINTIN (Vessel INTegrity analysis-INner flaws), utilizes the influence coefficients to calculate the stress intensity factor at the crack tip. This method has been compared with other solution methods including 3-D finite clement analysis for internal pressure, cooldown, and pressurized thermal shock loading conditions. The approximation solutions are within $\pm$2.5% of the those of FEA using symmetric model of one-forth of a vessel under pressure loading, and 1-3% higher under pressurized thermal shock condition. The analysis results confirm that the VINTIN method provides sufficiently accurate stress intensity factor values for axial semi-elliptical flaws on the surface of the reactor pressure vessel.
Acoustic Target Strength (TS) is a major parameter of the active sonar equation, which indicates the ratio of the radiated intensity from the source to the re-radiated intensity by a target. In developing a TS equation, it is assumed that the radiated pressure is known and the re-radiated intensity is unknown. This research provides a TS equation for polygonal plates, which is applicable to near field acoustics. In this research, Helmholtz-Kirchhoff formula is used as the primary equation for solving the re-radiated pressure field; the primary equation contains a surface (double) integral representation. The double integral representation can be reduced to a closed form, which involves only a line (single) integral representation of the boundary of the surface area by applying Stoke's theorem. Use of such line integral representations can reduce the cost of numerical calculation. Also Kirchhoff approximation is used to solve the surface values such as pressure and particle velocity. Finally, a generalized definition of Sonar Cross Section (SCS) that is applicable to near field is suggested. The TS equation for polygonal plates in near field is developed using the three prescribed statements; the redection to line integral representation, Kirchhoff approximation and a generalized definition of SCS. The equation developed in this research is applicable to near field, and therefore, no approximations are allowed except the Kirchhoff approximation. However, examinations with various types of models for reliability show that the equation has good performance in its applications. To analyze a general shape of model, a submarine type model was selected and successfully analyzed.
