  • Inflammation is a frequent radiation-induced reaction following therapeutic irradiation. Treatment of human umbilical endothelial cells (HUVEC) with ${\gamma}$-irradiation (${\gamma}$IR) induces the expression of adhesion proteins such as intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), and E-selectin. Since the upregulation of these proteins on endothelial cell Surface has been known to be associated with inflammation, interfering with the expression of adhesion molecules is an important therapeutic target. In the present study, we demonstrate that vitamin C inhibits ${\gamma}$IR induced expression of ICAM-1, VCAM-1, and E-selectin on HUVEC in a dose- and time dependent manner. Vitamin C a1so inhibited the production of Nitric oxide (NO) induced by ${\gamma}$IR. These data suggest that vitamin C has therapeutic potential for the treatment of various inflammatory disorder associated with an increase of endothelial leukocyte adhesion molecules.

  • Railway vehicles driven by wheels obtain force required for propulsion and braking by adhesive force between wheels and rails, this adhesive force is determined by multiplying adhesion coefficient of the friction surface by the applied axle load. Because the adhesion coefficient has a peak at certain slip velocity, it is important to determine the maximum values of the friction coefficient on the contact area. But this adhesive phenomenon is not clearly examined or analyzed. Thus we have developed new test procedure using the scaled adhesion test-bench for analyzing of the adhesion coefficient between wheel and rail. This adhesion test equipment is an experimental device that contacts mutually with twin disc which are equivalent to wheels and rails of railway vehicles.

  • The hydrophobicity of the microbial cell surface is responsible for the various interactions between microorganisms and different surface, and results in the flocculation of microbial cells, their adhesion to liquid or solid materials, and the floatation of microorganisms at the air-water interface. Accordingly, cell surface hydrophobicity is important not only in medicine but in other areas of biotechnology. This article reviews the role of cell surface hydrophobicity and its applications.

  • The interaction between adherent molecules and gas molecules was modeled in the molecular scale and simulated by the molecular dynamics method in order to understand evaporation and removal processes of adherent molecules on metallic surface using high temperature gas flow. Methanol molecules were chosen as adherent molecules to investigate effects of adhesion quantity and gas molecular collisions because the industrial oil has too complex structures of fatty acid. Effects of adherent quantity, gas temperature, surface temperature and adhesion strength for the evaporation rate of adherent molecules and the molecular removal mechanism were investigated and discussed in the present study. Evaporation and removal rates of adherent molecules from metallic surface calculated by the molecular dynamics method showed the similar dependence on the surface temperature shown in the experimental results.

  • Plastic bonded explosive(PBX) is mainly composed of the nitramine explosives, RDX, HMX, and polymer binders. When the adhesion between nitramine crystals and binder is not particularly strong and can be failed under stress, dewetting occurs rather suddenly and this leads to a significant drop in tensile strength of explosives. Mechnical property of plastic bonded explosive depends on the surface characteristics of filler and binder. In order to design for better adhesion, an understanding of the surface properties of explosive and binder is essential. In this study, 2 kinds of RDX and 4 kinds of ethylene vinyl acetate copolymers are selected, since they are widely used in many plastic bonded explosives. The technical objective of this investigation is to calculate for the surface free energy of RDX and EVA using theory of Fowkes, van Oss, Neumann approaches and Kaelble equation and to predict the interaction between filler and binder from their surface free energies.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of polymer-modified surface preparation mortars with pozzolanic materials for corrosion prevention method in deteriorated sewage treatment structures. The prepackaged-type surface preparation mortars are prepared with a polymer-binder ratio of 10%, ground granulated blast furnace slag contents of 0, 15, 30%, a fly ash content of 15%. And, the specimens are tested for workability, adhesion in tension, water absorption, crack and impact resistance. As a result, the prepackage-type surface preparation mortars for sewage treatment structure are satisfied with quality requirements by KS F 4716, Japan sewage work agency(JS) and JIS A 6916 for surface preparation mortars.

  • The interfacial evaluation of surface modified Jute fiber/polypropylene (PP) composites before and after hydration was investigated using micromechanical test and dynamic contact angle measurement. The IFSS of alkaline and silane-treated Jute fiber/PP composites increased, whereas after hydration, the IFSS of the untreated, alkaline- and silane-treated Jute fibers/PP composites decreased due to swelled fibrils by water infiltration. The interfacial adhesion of silane treated fiber/PP composites was higher than alkaline-treated or the untreated cases. The surface energies of Jute fiber treated under various conditions were obtained using dynamic contact angle measurement. Especially after hydration, the thermodynamic work of adhesion was calculated by considering water interlayer, which indicated the stability of IFSS between silane treated Jute fiber and PP matrix showing better than others.

  • Morphological changes of polyarylate (PAR) fiber treated with formic acid and ultraviolet (UV) were observed by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and an atomic force microscope (AFM). The results were analysed by using root mean square (RMS) roughness. In addition, the chemical changes of surface was investigated using contact angle and the interfacial adhesive strength between PAR fiber and PEN (Polyethylene naphthalate) matrix was calculated using the Pull-out test results. As the acid treatment concentration and UV irradiation time increased, cracks and pores were produced on the PAR fiber surface. Due to the roughness increased, the contact angle was decreased. For this reason, RMS roughness of PAR fiber was increased and the interfacial adhesive strength between the PAR fiber and PEN matrix was improved. The increase of interfacial adhesive strength was responsible for the increase of surface area which have cracks and pores.

  • HVOF thermal spray coating of micron size Co-alloy powder has been studied for the durability improvement of high velocity spindle (HVS). Optimal coating process of this system for the best surface properties is hydrogen flow rate 75 FMR, oxygen flow rate 38-42 FMR, feed rate 30 g/min at spray distance 5 inch. Friction coefficient (FC) and wear trace (WT) decrease increasing coating surface temperature from 25$^{\circ}$C to 538$^{\circ}$C due to the higher lubricant effects of the oxides at the higher temperature. At the study of adhesion of T800 coating on a light metal alloy Ti-6Al-4V (Ti64) tensile bond strength (TBS) and tensile fracture location (TFL) of Ti64/T800 are 8,740 psi and near middle of T800 coating respectively. This shows that adhesion of Ti64/T800 is higher than the cohesion strength (8,740 psi) of T800 coating. Therefore T800 coating is strongly advisable for the surface coating on HVS such as high speed air-bearing spindle.

  • The formation of hydrophilic surface based on polymers has received great attention due to the anti-adhesion of bacteria on solid substrates. Anti-adhesion coatings are aimed at suppressing the initial step of biofilm formation via non-cytotoxic mechanisms, and surfaces applied hydrophilic or ionic polymers showed the anti-adhesion effect for bioentities, such as proteins and bacteria. This is attributed to the formation of surface barrier from hydration layers, repulsions and osmotic stresses from polymer brushes, and electrostatic interactions between ionic polymers and cell surfaces. The antifouling polymer coating is usually fabricated by the grafting method through the bonding with functional groups on surfaces and the deposition method utilizing biomimetic anchors. This mini-review is a summary of representative antifouling polymers, coating strategies, and antibacterial efficacy. Furthermore, we will discuss consideration on the large area surface coating for application to public facilities and industry.
