Urban Uses of Underground Space around the World

  • As our global population grows each day, it is apparent that we must find new ways to provide space for habitation and the services necessary to support large urban areas. It is no longer advisable nor acceptable to continue to expand our cities on the surface, encroaching on valuable agricultural land and open space. We must also find ways to be more energy efficient in every aspect of our societies. Effective use of underground space can provide the space necessary to accommodate larger populations and the services necessary for their support in existing urban areas we can also find new ways to utilize underground facilities to improve urban efficiency and function. Underground technology has improved dramatically in the last two decades and continues to evolve to meet a great variety of applications. The confluence of available technology, economic feasibility, and greater acceptance of underground solutions with recognition of the need to change the ways we build and use out urban areas and their surrounding environment indicates that we are witnessing only the beginning of appropriate and innovative use of underground space future generations will indeed 'Think deep'.

A Development of Decision Support System for Nurse Scheduling (일 대학병원 간호직원 근무 스케쥴링 전산화 개발 사례)

  • The critical problem of nurse scheduling in the hospital is determining the day-to -day shift assignments for each nurse for the specified period in a way that satisfies the given requirements of the hospital. As nurse scheduling involves many factors and requirements, manual scheduling requires much time and effort to produce an adequate schedule. A PC - based decision support system, developed in Turbo - C/sup ++/, for nurse scheduling was introduced. The system is composed of 4 sub-systems : 1) Entering basic information for each nursing unit : 2) Generation of an appropriate initial schedule and revised schedule for a given period, maximally satisfying each nurse's duty requests : 3) Provision of variety of statistical information, and 4) Help messages for each modular function. Icons and a mouse are used for easier graphic user interface and reducing the need for typing efforts. This system can help nurses develop quick and easy schedule generation and allow more time for the patient care.

  • A web crawler is used widely in a variety of Internet applications such as search engines. As the Internet continues to grow, high performance web crawlers become more essential. Crawl scheduling which manages the allocation of web pages to each process for downloading documents is one of the important issues. In this paper, we identify issues that are important and challenging in the crawl scheduling. To address the issues, we propose a dynamic owl scheduling framework and subsequently a system architecture for a web crawler subject to the framework. This paper presents the architecture of a web crawler with dynamic scheduling support. The result of our preliminary performance evaluation made to the proposed crawler architecture is also presented.

  • The thesis here by shows that the extant suspension wire, which is stretched between electric poles to support a variety of communication wires, can be replaced by specially-redesigned cables called OPSW(Composite Suspension Wire with Optical Fiber) which have been devised for the first time in the world so that the functions of both communication and support can be united into one cable which is sure to be successfully installed on site, hence leading to outstanding effects that it can sharply reduce the load applied to electric poles as well as the cost of forthcoming constructions and that it can accordingly make a great contribution to the building of Smart Grid network.

  • Color selection plays a vitally important role in creating impressions of individuals or companies. This is largely because colors have sensibility aspects, which relate, in part, to images and, in part, to associations. Based on theories of color harmony and sensibility ergonomics, we have developed quantitative and systematic metrics for color images. In this paper, we suggest a color coordinate system that supports color analysis and color harmony functions using color images, which can be captured by corresponding adjectival words. We focus on a prototype system for graphical logo design to exemplify our concepts. The system can be applied to a wide variety of design domains.

  • Wood carving has been extremely widely practiced, but survives much less well than the other main materials, being vulnerable to decay, insect damage, and fire. It therefore forms an important hidden element in the art history of many cultures. Even though wood is less durable than either steel or stone, it has been used for a long time due to its usefulness. Wood has a lot of benefits. So people have used wood for materials in houses, trains, cars, bridges, and simple utilities in their ways according to their own religions, climates, and environment they are living in. Nowadays, there are wood products that are made up for its weaknesses and this has made wood be used in variety fields. Moreover, wood has been widely selected materials for sculptures, interior, and also for architecture thanks to its colors and textures. Wood has helped our life more abundant and beautiful.

  • while they cannot overcome the limitation that arises in the process of representing the 3D real world to the 2D plane. Also, there exists requirements on performance to support realtime navigation capability.In this paper, therefore, we propose a cell loading algorithm for navigating virtual space that can support realtime visualization according to the multimedia objects in variety and the change of the view point by user, and that can accommodate the capacity imposed in the process of navigation regardless of the number of objects.

  • A mobile ad-hoc network is composed of only mobile nodes, which are distributed dynamically, without any wired backbone or centralized entities. Since the existing works on ad-hoc routing protocol are mostly biased toward a military application, we need a new routing scheme for a support of multimedia services in mobile ad-hoc networks. Therefore, we propose a novel scheme that can support a variety of traffic attributes and can be applicable to high-speed and multimedia data services in mobile ad-hoc networks by using adaptive transmission power level. As a result of simulation, the proposed scheme has better performance than conventional method, which is performed with uniform transmission power level, in view of route query delay time.

  • Flexible Manufacturing System(FMS) is an integrated, computer controlled complex of automated material handling devices and numerically controlled machine tools that can simultaneously process medium-sized volumes of a variety of part types. This paper discusses planning problems that can be solved for efficient use of an FMS and present an integrated decision support system for FMS production planning and scheduling problems. FMSDS(Flexible Manufacturing Systems Decision Support System) consists of data handling modules, part selection module, loading module, load adjusting module, scheduling module and simulation module etc. This paper presents the solution methodology of each subproblems and integrated interfaces between subproblems using hierarchical approaches and loop controls considering the relationships between subproblems. A case study by this model is presented.

  • The purpose of this research entails the study of the multicriteria graph-theoretic Facility Layout Problem(FLP), the development of a Decision Support System(DSS), and a sensitivity analysis for graph Theoretic heuristics. The graph theoretic FLP Decision Support System gives decision makers or planners more information as a guide in producing their final layouts. This information is provided by a variety of final result scores, so called upper bound values, based on different options and different criteria. The increased information provided will give decision makers more confidence in design a block plan. One case is presented to demonstrate the applicability of the system to real-world problem. Finally, applicabilities of the DSS to other format layouts, such as GT layout and JIT's U-line, are briefly mentioned.
