  • Traditional implementation schemes for automotive electronic control units look simple, but the tradition schemes need so many coarse works to satisfy the user requirements regarding time constraints whenever their microprocessors are changed. Recently, a movement toward using middle-wares, such as OSEK operating system, has risen in automotive industry. In this paper, we describe how to use the features of operating systems to replace traditional firmware based softwares in points of views of services, such as multitask support, preemption, and realtime property. To show an example, we implemented a parking assistance system as a prototype.

  • An approach to providing computational support with an expert shell is discussed with the scope of an industrial wire harness design, especially at a manufacturing stage. Key issues include the development of an architecture that supports a frequent design change among engineers associated with different parts of the wiring design process and the development of hierarchical representations that capture the different characteristics (e.g., connectivity, configuration) of the harnesses. The abstraction of design information results in features, while the abstraction of drawing elements leads to the definition of objects. These abstractions are essential for efficient transactions among people and computer tools in a domain that involves numerous interacting constraints. In this paper the strategy for the problem decomposition, the definition of features, and the ways in which features are shared by various operations and design changes, are discussed. We conclude with a discussion of some of the issues raised by the project and the steps underway to address them.

  • Advances in the technology of computational design are giving architects and engineers the opportunity to analyze buildings with complex geometries. This study explores the optimization and automation process using the parametric design method, and uses digital tools to achieve surface representation and panelization for curved shaped office buildings. In this paper, we propose parametric algorithms of dimensional and geometric constraints using the Knowledge-ware scripts embedded in Gehry Technologies' Digital Project. The knowledge-based design methods proposed in this study can be used to systemize the knowledge possessed by experts in the form of data. Such knowledge is required to promote collaboration between designers and engineers in the process of CAD/CAE/CAM. The aim of this study is to integrate the process into design, which establishes an integrated process. This integration enables two-way feedback between design and construction data by combining the methods used in designing, engineering, and construction.

  • Network optimization is being increasingly important and fundamental issue in the fields such as engineering, computer science, operations research, transportation, telecommunication, decision support systems, manufacturing, and airline scheduling. Networks provide a useful way to modeling real world problems and are extensively used in practice. Many real world applications impose on more complex issues, such as, complex structure, complex constraints, and multiple objects to be handled simultaneously and make the problem intractable to the traditional approaches. Recent advances in evolutionary computation have made it possible to solve such practical network optimization problems. The invited talk introduces a thorough treatment of evolutionary approaches, i.e., hybrid genetic algorithms approach to network optimization problems, such as, fixed charge transportation problem, minimum cost and maximum flow problem, minimum spanning tree problem, multiple project scheduling problems, scheduling problem in FMS.

  • This paper gives an overview on the some potential applications and key technologies of biomimetic underwater robot for naval operations. Unlike most manned underwater naval systems, biomimetic underwater robots can be especially useful in near-land or harbour areas due to their ability to operate in shallow water effectively. Biomimetic underwater robot provide advantages in reaching locations that would be difficult or too dangerous for a manned vehicle to reach, as well as providing a level of autonomy that can remove the requirement for dedicated human operator support. Using multiple or schools of underwater robots would provide increased flexibility for navigation, communication and surveillance ability. And it alleviate some of the restrictions associated with speed and endurance design constraints.

  • Various M2M applications have different quality-of-service(QoS) requirements to be implemented practically. QoS requirements are normally data rate and delay constraint. However, there are limited number of wireless communication chip solutions which cannot support QoS requirements for all M2M application. Hence, aggregated usage of plural wireless communication chip solutions should be needed to implement M2M applications. In this paper, we consider the case that two wireless communication chips using random access protocol work together to transmit data of an M2M application. In such case, data rate and delay performance are mathematically analyzed. In our results, practical data rate can be improved from 2.5 to 7 times while delay constraints are satisfied if we simply use two wireless communication chips together.

  • Generating a project network of a specific construction project is very time consuming and difficult task in the field. To effectiviely automate and support the planning process, we design a case-based project planning expert system inspired by the fact a human expert project planner uses previous cases for planning a new project. A construction project case consist of its specific characteristics and the corresponding project network (i.e. project plan). Using frame based representation. we represent the project features affecting the progress network and the entities composing the project plan such as the buildings, construction methods, WBS (work breakdown structure), activities, and resources. The project planning process runs through most similar case retrieval, case adaptation, and user requirement satisfaction. We represent the construction domain knowledge for each procedure using constraints and rules. We develop the methodology for constraint-based case adaption. Case adaptation process mainly consist of activity generation/deletion and predecence constraint satisfaction, for which we develop the dynamic constraint generation method and connect user-level requirement representation the system-level network modification knowledge. The methodology is being applied to the prototype for apartment construction project planning.

  • This study presents a mathematical programming model to develop production planning in the manufacturing processes for photovoltaic silicon ingots and wafers. The model is formulated as a linear programming model that maximizes total growth margin, which is composed of production cost, inventory cost, shortage cost, and sales profit while considering the constraints associated with the production environments of photovoltaic materials. In order to demonstrate the utility of the model for production planning, we run operations for a planning horizon of a year for a case study. When the primary results of this mathematical programming are compared with the historical records, the model could have resulted in the considerable increase of the total growth margin by effectively reducing inventory cost if a decision maker had employed the model as a decision support system with perfect information for sales demand.

  • An approach to providing computational support for concurrent design is discussed in the context of an automobile wiring harness design problem. Key issues include the development of an architecture that supports collaboration among specialists, the development of hierarchical representations that capture different characteristics of the design, and decomposition of tasks to achieve a tradeoff between efficiency and robustness of the system. We present an architecture in which the main design tasks are supported by agents-asynchronous and semi-autonomous modules that automate routine design tasks and provide specialized interfaces for working on particular aspects of the design. The agent communication and coordination mechanisms permit members of an engineering team to work concurrently, at different levels of detail and of different versions of the design. The design is represented hierarchically, with detailed models maintained by the participating agents. In conjunction with the architecture and design representations, issues pertaining to the exchange of information among different views of the design, management of dependencies and constraints, and propagation of design changes are discussed.

  • This paper presents a generalized fuel choice model in which restrictive constraints on cross-price coefficients as Baughman-Joskow-FEA Logit Model need not be imposed, but all demand elasticities are uniquely determined. The model is applied to estimating aggregate energy demand and fuel choices for the residential and commercial sector. The structural equations are estimated by a generalized least squares procedure using national-level EPB, KDI, BK, KRIS, MOER data for 1965 and 1980, and other related reports. The econometric results support the argument that “third-price” and “fourth-price” coefficients should not be constrained in estimating relative market share models. Furthermore, by using this fuel choice model, it has forecasted energy demands by fuel sources in, the residential and commercial sector until 1991. The results are turned out good estimates to compare with existing demands forecasted from other institutes.
