Recently flexible electronic devices have attracted a great deal of attention because of new application possibilities including flexible display, flexible memory, flexible solar cell and flexible sensor. In particular, development of flexible memory is essential to complete the flexible integrated systems such as flexible smart phone and wearable computer. Research of flexible memory has primarily focused on organic-based materials. However, organic flexible memory has still several disadvantages, including lower electrical performance and long-term reliability. Therefore, emerging research in flexible electronics seeks to develop flexible and stretchable technologies that offer the high performance of conventional wafer-based devices as well as superior flexibility. Development of flexible memory with inorganic silicon materials is based on the design principle that any material, in sufficiently thin form, is flexible and bendable since the bending strain is directly proportional to thickness. This article reviews progress in recent technologies for flexible memory and flexible electronics with inorganic silicon materials, including transfer printing technology, wavy or serpentine interconnection structure for reducing strain, and wafer thinning technology.

Cemented carbides, best known for their superior mechanical properties such as high strength, high hardness and high wear resistance, have a wide range of industrial applications including metal working tools, mining tools, and wear resistance components. The cobalt has been used as a binder in the WC-based hard composites due to its outstanding wetting and adhesion characteristics even though its expensiveness. Therefore many studies attempted to find a better substitute for cobalt as binder to decrease production costs. This investigation is a pre-step to study dynamic fracture characteristic evaluation of a WC-Co hardmetal were evaluated by using the instrumented Charpy impact testing procedures. It was found that the dynamic characteristics of used strain amplifier were very important experimental factors to extract valid dynamic fracturing data in WC-Co specimens. It was suggested by showing some experimental examples that when we wished to evaluate dynamic fracture toughness for cemented carbide composites by using the instrumented Charpy impact testing procedure, a careful attention must be given to obtain valid results.
Complementary DNAs (cDNAs) to the coat protein gene of an ordinary Korean strain of potato virus Y (PVY-OK) isolated from potato (cv. Superior) were synthesized and cloned into a plasmid pUC119 and sequenced. The RNA of the virus propagated in tobacco (Nicotinaa sylvestris) was extracted by the method of phenol extraction. The first strand of cDNAs to the coat protein penomic RNA of the virus was made by Moloney murine leukemia virus reverse transcriptase. The cDNA were synthesized and amplified by the method of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using a pair of oligonucleotide primers. PVYCP3P and PVYCP3M. The size of cDNAs inserted in pUC119 plasmid was estimated as about 840 bp upon agarose gel electrophoresis. Double stranded cDNAs were transformed into the competent cell of E. coli JM109. Sequence analysis of cDNAs was conducted by the dideoxynucleotide chain termination method. Homology of cDNAs of the PVY-OK coat protein genomic RNA with those of PVY-O (Japan), PVY-T (Japan), PVY-TH (Japan), PVYN (The Netherlands),and PVYY (France) was represented as 97.3%, 88.9%, 89.3%, 89.6% and 98.5%, respectively. Homology at the amino acid level turned out to the be 97.4%, 92.5%, 92.9%, 92.9% and 98.5%, respectively.

Large and complex structures are being built now-a-days and, they are required to be functional even under extreme loading and environmental conditions. In order to meet the safety and maintenance demands, there is a need to build sensors integrated structural system, which can sense and provide necessary information about the structural response to complex loading and environment. Sophisticated tools have been developed for the design and construction of civil engineering structures. However, very little has been accomplished in the area of monitoring and rehabilitation. The employment of appropriate sensor is therefore crucial, and efforts must be directed towards non-destructive testing techniques that remain functional throughout the life of the structure. Fiber optic sensors are emerging as a superior non-destructive tool for evaluating the health of civil engineering structures. Flexibility, small in size and corrosion resistance of optical fibers allow them to be directly embedded in concrete structures. The inherent advantages of fiber optic sensors over conventional sensors include high resolution, ability to work in difficult environment, immunity from electromagnetic interference, large band width of signal, low noise and high sensitivity. This paper brings out the potential and current status of technology of fiber optic sensors for civil engineering applications. The importance of employing fiber optic sensors for health monitoring of civil engineering structures has been highlighted. Details of laboratory studies carried out on fiber optic strain sensors to assess their suitability for civil engineering applications are also covered.

Dry-sliding-wear behavior of Fe-18Cr-l0Mn steel with various carbon and nitrogen contents was characterized, and the effect of carbon and nitrogen contents on the wear was investigated. Dry sliding wear tests of the steel were carried out at room temperature against an AISI 52100 bearing steel ball using a pin-on-disk wear tester. Applied wear loads were varied from 10 N to 100 N, and the sliding distance was fixed as 720 m. Worn surfaces and the wear debris of the steel were examined using an SEM to find out the wear mechanism. It was found that the Fe-18Cr-10Mn with both carbon and nitrogen exhibited superior wear resistance to the steel with only nitrogen. The wear resistance of the Fe-18Cr-10Mn-xC-yN alloy increased with the increase of the carbon content. The excellent wear resistance of the Fe-18Cr-10Mn-xC-yN alloy was explained by the increased strain-hardening capability with the interstitial atoms.
For decades, traditional mutation breeding technologies using spontaneous mutation, chemicals, or conventional radiation sources have contributed greatly to the improvement of crops and microorganisms of agricultural and industrial importance. However, new mutagens that can generate more diverse mutation spectra with minimal damage to the original organism are always in need. In this regard, ion beam irradiation, including proton-, helium-, and heavier-charged particle irradiation, is considered to be superior to traditional radiation mutagenesis. In particular, it has been suggested that ion beams predominantly produce strand breaks that often lead to mutations, which is not a situation frequently observed in mutagenesis induced by gamma-ray exposure. In this review, we briefly describe the general principles and history of particle accelerators, and then introduce their successful application in ion beam technology for the improvement of crops and microbes. In particular, a 100-MeV proton beam accelerator currently under construction by the Proton Engineering Frontier Project (PEFP) is discussed. The PEFP accelerator will hopefully prompt the utilization of ion beam technology for strain improvement, as well as for use in nuclear physics, medical science, biology, space technology, radiation technology and basic sciences.
Leuconostoc genus, which comprise heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria, reduces fructose to mannitol by recycling intracellular NADH. To evaluate the mannitol productivities of different Leuconostoc species, 5 stock cultures and 4 newly isolated strains were cultivated in MRS and simplified media containing glucose and fructose (1:2 ratio). Among them, L. citreum KACC 91348P, which was isolated from kimchi, showed superior result in cell growth rate, mannitol production rate, and yield in both media. The optimal condition for mannitol production of this strain was pH 6.5 and $30^{\circ}C$. When L. citreum KACC was cultured in simplified medium in a 2 l batch fermenter under optimal conditions, the maximum volumetric productivity was 14.83 $g{\cdot}l^{-1}h^{-1}$ and overall yield was 86.6%. This strain is a novel and efficient mannitol producer originated from foods to be used for fermentation of fructose-containing foods.

In an automotive body structure, a design configuration that fulfills structural requirements such as deflection, stiffness and strength is necessary for structural design and is composed of various components. The integrated design is used to obtain a minimum weight structure with optimal or feasible performance based on conflicting constraints and boundaries. The mechanical design must begin with the definition of one or more concepts for structure and specification requirements in a given application environment. Structural optimization is then introduced as an integral part of the product design and used to yield a superior design to the conventional linear one. Although finite element analysis has been firmly established and extensively used in the past, geometric and material nonlinear analyses have also received considerable attention over the past decades. Also, nonlinear analysis may be useful in the area of structural designs where instability phenomena can include critical design criteria such as plastic strain and residual deformation. This proposed approach can be used for complicated structural analysis for an integrated design process with the nonlinear feasible local flexibilities between system and subsystems.
It is necessary to develop new methods to prevent catastrophic failure of structural material in order to avoid accidents and conserve natural and energy resources. Design of intelligent materials with a self-diagnosing function to prevent fatal fracture of structural materials was achieved by smart composites consisting of carbon fiber tows or carbon powders with a small value of ultimate elongation and glass fiber tows with a large value of ultimate elongation. The changes in electrical resistance of CF-GFRP/GFRP (carbon fiber and glass fiber-reinforced plastics/glass fiber-reinforced plastics) composites increased abruptly with increasing strain, and a tremendous change was seen at the transition point where carbon fiber tows were broken. Therefore, the composites were not to monitor damage from the early stage. On the other hand, the change in electrical resistance of CP-GFRP/GFRP (carbon powder dispersed in glass fiber-reinforced plastics/glass fiber-reinforced plastics) composites increased almost linearly in proportion to strain. CP-GFRP/GFRP composites are superior to CF-GFRP/GFRP composites in terms of their capability to monitor damage by measuring change in electrical resistance from the early stage of damage. However, the former was inferior to the latter as an application because of the difficulties of mass production and high cost. A method based on monitoring damage by measuring changes in the electrical resistance of structural materials is promising for improved reliability of the material.
