  • YBCO thin films have good characteristics for current limiting materials due to compact size and high current carrying capability. But the irregularities and the extreme thin thickness of YBCO films cause some difficulties in simultaneous quench and thermal shock protection. In order to solve these problems, vertical magnetic field generated from solenoid coil was applied to the YBCO element. And also to minimize the inductance caused by the serial connection of magnetic field source with superconducting elements, magnetic field source was separated from the power lines adapting protective current transformer. In this study, electric field-current (E-I) and quench characteristics of YBCO films were analyzed both by electrical measuring method and observations of bubble propagation. From the experiment results, it was revealed that the magnetic fields generated by surrounding coil could induce the uniform quench distribution for all stripes of current limiting units and finally simultaneous quenches were realized in all serial connection of YBCO elements. In addition, the separation of magnetic field source form electrical network could be good solution for simultaneous quench of YBCO films without any unnecessary effect caused by serial connection.

  • The fabrication of high quality superconducting thin films using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) has been reported to find optimized processing conditions and to make the millimeter-wave devices. High temperature superconducting (HTS) YBCO films were prepared on MgO (10${\times}$10${\times}$0.5mm) substrates by the PLD. The 3 pole bandpass filter with the center frequency of 22 GHz for satellite communication was designed consisting of hairpin coupled-lines to reduce the configuration in size. YBCO films are c-axis oriented and show superconductive transition temperatures of 88∼89 K with the transition widths < 0.5 K. The insertion loss of passband at 70 K was about 5 dB. The measured frequency response of superconducting filter will be compared with the simulation result.

  • This study investigated the effect of Kr ion beam irradiation on the superconducting properties of Nb thin films, which are known for their high superconducting transition temperature (Tc) at ambient pressure among single elements. Using the Stopping and Range of Ions in Matter (SRIM) program, we analyzed the distribution of Kr ions and displacement per atom (DPA) after irradiation, finding a direct correlation between irradiation amount and DPA. In samples with stronger beam energy, deeper ion penetration, fewer ions remained, and higher DPA values were observed. X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed that the Nb (110) peak at 38.5° weakened and shifted with increasing irradiation. Tc decreased in all samples after irradiation, more significantly in those with higher beam energy. Irradiation raised resistivity of the film and lowered the residual-resistivity ratio (RRR). AC susceptibility measurements were also consistent with these findings. This research could potentially lead to more efficient and powerful superconducting devices and a better understanding of superconducting materials.

  • Transport and tunneling measurements of nanostructured superconducting thin films are presented. To understand the effects of film morphology on their superconducting properties, thermal annealing experiments have been performed. The transition temperature increases with thermal annealing temperature towards the bulk value. Also, thermal annealing results in a shift of transverse phonon mode. These can be understood with changes in film morphology and suggest its importance on the superconducting state properties.

  • Perovskite oxide materials are very important for the electronics industry, because they exhibit promising properties. With an interest in the obvious applications, significant effort has been invested in the growth of highly crystalline epitaxial perovskite oxide thin films in our laboratory. And the desired structure of films was formed to achieve excellent properties. $Y_1Ba_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ (YBCO) superconducting thin films were simultaneously deposited on both sides of 3 inch wafer by inverted cylindrical sputtering. Values of microwave surface resistance R$_2$ (75 K, 145 GHz, 0 T) smaller than 100 m$\Omega$ were reached over the whole area of YBCO thin films by pre-seeded a self-template layer. For implementation of voltage tunable high-quality varactor, A tri-layer structured SrTiO$_3$ (STO) thin films with different tetragonal distortion degree was prepared in order to simultaneously achieve a large relative capacitance change and a small dielectric loss. Highly a-axis textured $Ba_{0.65}Sr_{0.35}TiO_3$ (BST65/35) thin films was grown on Pt/Ti/SiO$_2$/Si substrate for monolithic bolometers by introducing $Ba_{0.65}Sr_{0.35}RuO_3$ (BSR65/35) thin films as buffer layer. With the buffer layer, the leakage current density of BST65/35 thin films were greatly reduced, and the pyroelectric coefficient of $7.6\times10_{-7}$ C $cm^{-2}$ $K^{-1}$ was achieved at 6 V/$\mu$m bias and room temperature.

  • We present current limiting properties of 1.2kV/70A superconducting fault current limiter based on YBCO thin films. This is consisted of 6 wafers (3 parallel $\times$ 2 serial connection) with 4 inch-diameter YBCO thin film. The quench current Iq of the switching elements vary between 33.9 and 35.6 A. Within the difference of 0.5 A in the sum of quench current Iq in two stacks, the serial connection of the stacks showed the simultaneous quench behavior in applied power of 1.2 kV/70A.

  • The mixed-state Hall angle has been measured in Hg-based superconducting thin films as functions of magnetic fields (H) up to 18 T. The temperature dependence of the Hall angle shows a peak (T$^{\ast}$) at low temperature, which is consistent with a crossover point from the thermally activated flux flow (TAFF) to a critical region (CR). At low fields below 10 T, T$^{\ast}$ shifts to low temperature with increasing fields. Interestingly, however, we found that T$^{\ast}$ is independent of fields above 10 T, suggesting unusual vortex state. A physical implication of H - T$^{\ast}$ line will be discussed.

  • The mixed-state Hall angle has been measured in Hg-based superconducting thin films as functions of magnetic fields (H) up to 18 T. The temperature dependence of the Hall angle shows a peak (T*) at low temperature, which is consistent with a crossover point from the thermally activated flux flow (TAFF) to a critical region (CR). At low fields below 10 T, T* shifts to low temperature with increasing fields. Interestingly, however, we found that T* is independent of fields above 10 T, suggesting unusual vortex state. A physical implication of H-T* line will be discussed.
