A Study of Concentration Characteristics of Acidic Air Pollutants During the Summer and Winter Seasons in Seoul (서울지역 여름철과 겨울철 산성 오염물질의 농도 특성에 대한 연구)

  • Winter and summer samples were collected from January 3 to February 7, 1997 and July 26 to September 11, 1997, respectively, in Seoul. This study was to characterize the concentrations of the annular denuder system (ADS) were $HNO_3$, $HNO_2$, $SO_2$ and $NH_3$ in the gas phase, and $PM_{2.5}$ ($d_p$〈2.5$mu extrm{m}$), $SO_4^{2-}$, NO3-, and $NH_4^+$ in the particulate phase. All chemical species monitored from this study showed statistical seasonal variations except for $SO_4^{2-}$ . Nitric acid (HNO3) and ammonia ($NH_3$) exhibited substantially higher concentrations during the summer, while nitrous acid ($HNO_2$) and sulfur dioxide ($SO_2$) concentrations were higher during the winter. $PM_{2.5}$, $NO_3^-$, and $NH_4^+$ were higher leves in the winter. High correlations were found among $PM_{2.5}$, $NO_3^-$ $SO_4^{2-}$ and $NH_4^+$ during two seasons.

  • The sulfur-iodine (SI) thermochemical water splitting cycle is one of promising hydrogen production methods from water using high-temperature heat generated from a high temperature gas-cooled nuclear reactor (HTGR). The SI cycle consists of three main units, such as Bunsen reaction, HI decomposition, and $H_2SO_4$ decomposition. The feasibility of continuous operation of a series of subunits for $H_2SO_4$ decomposition was investigated with a bench-scale facility working at ambient pressure. It showed stable and reproducible $H_2SO_4$ decomposition by steadily producing $SO_2$ and $O_2$ corresponding to a capacity of 1 mol/h $H_2$ for 24 hrs.

  • II-$III_{2}-(S,Se)_{4}$ structured of phosphor have been used at various fields because they have high luminescent efficiency and broad emission band. Among these phosphors, europium doped $BaGa_{2}S_{4}$ was prepared by solid-state method. We investigated the possibility of applying [ ] due to emissive property of UV region. Also, general sulfide phosphors were synthesized by using injurious $H_{2}S$ $CS_{2}$ gas. However, this study prepared $BaGa_{2}S_{4}:Eu^{2+}$ phosphor is addition to excess sulfur under 5% $H_{2}$/95% $N_{2}$ reduction atmosphere. So, this process could involved large scale synthesis because of non-harmfulness and simple process. The photo-luminescence efficiency of the prepared $BaGa_{2}S_{4}:Eu^{2+}$ phosphor increased by 20% compared with commercial $BaGa_{2}S_{4}:Eu^{2+}$ phosphor. From this, we could conclude that the prepared $BaGa_{2}S_{4}:Eu^{2+}$ could be applied to green phosphor for white LED of three wavelengths.

Electrochemical Approach in Plasma Display Panel Glass Melts doped with Sulfate and Sulfide I. Oxygen Equilibrium Pressure

  • The oxygen gas behavior in PDP (plasma Display Panel) glass melts doped with sulfate ($SO_4^{-2}$) or blast furnace slag (BFS, $S^{2-}$) or both by means of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrodes was observed after the first fining. The temperature dependence of oxygen equilibrium pressure ($P_{O2}$) in each melt showed typical behavior, namely $P_{O2}$ decreased as temperature decreased. This suggests that an oxidation of $S^{4+}$ to $S^{6+}$ took place. However, the $P_{O2}$-value at constant temperature increased in the following order: BFS$P_{O2}$ of the melt doped with sulfate+BFS was much lower than that of the melt with only sulfate, although only 10% of sulfur was added by the BFS. This behavior can be explained by the redox reaction between sulfide ions in the BFS and dissolved oxygen ions in the melt during the first fining.

Compositional Characteristics and Origin of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons[PAHs] of Crude Oils and Petroleum Products (원유와 석유제품 중의 다환방향족탄화수소류[PAHs] 분포특성과 발생원)

  • Compositional characteristics and origin of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs), which should be strongly regulated for environmental protection in the crude oils and petroleum products, have been investigated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC/MS). In the crude oils analyzed, two-rings compound(naphthalene) of PAHs was detected around $72.3\sim93.5%$, but five- or six-rings compound of PAHs was not detected. In the crude oils analyzed, the molecular ratio indices of Phe/Ant(phenanthrene/anthracene)>15, Fla/Pyr(fluoranthene/pyrene)<1, BaA/Chr(benzo (a)anthracene/chrysene)$\leq0.4$ could be effectively applied, and we found that the origin of PAHs was petrogenic sources. Total PAHs concentrations in the crude oils were increased with increasing API gravity and with decreasing sulfur contents of the analyzed crude oils. Five- or six-rings compound of PAHs were not included in ail petroleum products except bunker-C. Furthermore, the molecular ratio indices of Phe/Ant(phenanthrene/anthracene) vs. Fla/Pyr(fluoranthene/pyrene) could be effectively applied as the standard for the PAHs contamination criterion at the other Korean areas.

Comparison of Volatile Flavor Compounds in Meat of the Blue Crab Using V-SDE and SPME Methods (V-SDE와 SPME법에 의한 꽃게(Portunus trituberculatus)육의 휘발성 향기성분 비교)

  • Volatile flavor compounds in meat of the blue crab Portunus trituberculatus were compared using vacuum simultaneous steam distillation-solvent extraction (V-SDE) and solid phase microextraction (SPME)/ gas chromatography (GC)/ mass selective detection (MSD) methods. A total of 100 volatile flavor compounds were identified by both methods: 77 by V-SDE and 59 by SPME. These compounds were composed of 17 aldehydes, 12 ketones, 19 alcohols, 5 esters, 4 sulfur-containing compounds, 6 nitrogen-containing compounds, 23 aromatic compounds, 6 hydrocarbons, 2 terpenes, and 6 miscellaneous compounds. Although more compounds were detected using V-SDE than using SPME, the levels of all groups detected, except esters, were higher using SPME than using V-SDE. In addition to trimethylamine, aldehydes, and aromatic compounds, the S- and N-containing compounds with low thresholds are thought to have positive roles for flavors in the meat of the blue crab.

Elucidation of Intergranular Corrosion of UNS N08810 alloys (UNS N08810 합금의 입계부식손상과 원인 분석)

  • Corrosion failure of petrochemical facilities is one of the difficulties in maintenance, since operating conditions of crude oil production, storage, and refinement are very aggressive. UNS N08810, which has been used for crude oil transportation pipes and storage tanks in petrochemical industries, shows good resistance to general corrosion and localized corrosion in several environments. Among its environments, UNS N08810 showed better corrosion resistance in fuel gas containing sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid and sulfur. However, ductility and toughness at high temperature over about $500^{\circ}C$ were greatly reduced due to microstructural change. In general, welding process is the representative method to join the parts in industrial components. Because the alloy by welding can be sensitized and corroded, the manufacturing process should be controlled. In this work, UNS N08810 was used and heat treatment conditions including solution and stabilization treatments were controlled. Oxalic acid etch test by ASTM A262 Practice A was done to evaluate the qualitative sensitization in room temperature. Huey test by ASTM A262 Practice C was done to evaluate the intergranular corrosion rate in boiling 65% $HNO_3$ solution. Also, the microstructure by thermal history was analyzed. Experimental alloy showed high intergranular corrosion rate and its corrosion mechanism was elucidated.

Empirical Study on water wall tube corrosion mechanism for Tangential type coal fired power plant boiler (석탄화력발전소 보일러의 수냉벽튜브 부식 메카니즘에 대한 실증적 고찰)

  • In this study, boiler tube thickness measurement and numerical analysis were conducted for standard 500MW coal-fired power plant in order to research the mechanism of tangential-fired boiler corrosion empirically. The most dominant corrosion mechanism of tangential-fired boiler waterwall was corrosion by sulfur contained in the unburned carbon. And the secondary mechanism was $H_2S$ gas corrosion at localized reducing atmosphere. It is required to decrease the air-stage combustion operation in order to mitigate the waterwall tube corrosion. Also stringent coal pulverization quality control and reinforcing work for corrosion susceptible area such as anti-corrosion coatings is required

Clinical Characteristics of Patients with Halitosis (구취 환자의 임상적 특징)

  • Objective : Halitosis, or bad breath, is a common concern for many people. The aim of this study was to investigate clinical characteristics of halitosis patients and correlation with their various associated elements. Methods: We surveyed 169 halitosis patients by reviewing questionnaires from the Halitosis Clinic in the Hospital of Oriental Medicine, Kyunghee University from January 2004 to March 2006. The questionnaires contained various items including sex, age, history of smoking and alcohol intake, duration of symptoms in a week, time and condition of severe halitosis, suggestive origin of halitosis, taste abnormality, oral hygiene, self-assessed halitosis severity, dry mouth, postnasal drip, tonsillolith, globus pharyngeus, reflux sensation, too much gas and Winkel tongue coating index. Volatile sulfur compounds were measured with a $Halimeter^{\circledR}$. Results : The halitosis patients actively carried out management methods such as non-smoking, moderation in drink, teeth brushing and tongue scraping in order to decrease their oral malodor. Tongue coating significantly affected the $Halimeter^{\circledR}$ reading score, and tongue coating and dry mouth significantly affected self-assessed halitosis severity. Conclusions: Our results suggest that tongue coating and dry mouth should be treated to improve satisfaction in halitosis patients.
