  • Great concerns about atmospheric aerosols are attributed to their multiple roles to atmospheric processes. For example, atmospheric aerosols influence global climate, directly by scattering or absorbing solar radiations and indirectly by serving as cloud condensation nuclei. They also have a significant impact on human health and visibility. Many of these effects depend on the size and composition of atmospheric aerosols, and thus detailed information on the physicochemical properties and the distribution of airborne particles is critical to accurately predict their impact on the Earth's climate as well as human health. A single particle analysis technique, named low-Z particle electron probe X-ray microanalysis (low-Z particle EPMA) that can determine the concentration of low-Z elements such as carbon, nitrogen and oxygen in a microscopic volume has been developed. The capability of quantitative analysis of low-Z elements in individual particle allows the characterization of especially important atmospheric particles such as sulfates, nitrates, ammonium, and carbonaceous particles. Furthermore, the diversity and the complicated heterogeneity of atmospheric particles in chemical compositions can be investigated in detail. In this review, the development and methodology of low-Z particle EPMA for the analysis of atmospheric aerosols are introduced. Also, its typical applications for the characterization of various atmospheric particles, i.e., on the chemical compositions, morphologies, the size segregated distributions, and the origins of Asian dust, urban aerosols, indoor aerosols in underground subway station, and Arctic aerosols, are illustrated.

  • As a wet chemical drying process "hot petroleum drying method" was applied and developed for preparing uniformly fine oxide powder with high purity and sinterreactivity. Using this method solution of sulfates was dried in hot petroleum bath (~17$0^{\circ}C$) to sulfate powder from which corresponding mullite doped by Fe3+ ion was formed. Particle size, shape, decomposition by heat, and phase identification of sulfate andoxide powders determined by DTA, TGA, X-ray diffraction, analysis and electron microscopy: sulfate powder prepared by this drying method is an intimate mixture of the amorphous form of uniformly and finely distributed spherical particles (0.05-0.1$\mu$). Mullitization with the sulfate powder occurs at 110$0^{\circ}C$ in air. The morphology of mullite particle made by firing the sulfate powder at 135$0^{\circ}C$ in oxygen atmosphere is granular of 0.1-0.3$\mu$ in size. This drying process proved to be a very effective method for preparing fine, homogeneous, and highly sinterreactive multicomponent oxide powder without conventional ceramic process of mixing, milling, and granulating. This process can be also applied for preparing electronic ceramic materials which are requisite for high purity and homogeneity.mogeneity.

  • The fluidity of high flowing concrete can be affected by numerous parameters which characterize either the cement of the admixture. The reactivity of a cement as determined by its chemical composition(especially its $C_3$A content), its fineness and its content in sulfates and alkalies obviously plays a key role in rheology of high flowing concrete in fresh state. Specific properties of high range water reducing AE agent used to enhance the workability of high flowing concrete also exert important influence. The purpose of this experimental study is to investigate and analyze the effect of cement and high range water reducing AE agent in fluidity, setting, compressive strength of high flowing concrete. As a result, we found that fluidity of high flowing concrete is affected greatly by kind of cement and high range water reducing AE agent, also, there is harmonic character between high belite cement and polycarbonic acid high range water reducing AE agent.

  • Groundwater chemistry in Namwon area, Korea, was investigated to understand the contribution of geochemical processes on groundwater chemistry. For this study, a total of 279 groundwater samples were collected from 93 wells distributed over the study area. Higher concentrations of major ions are generally encountered in the shallow alluvial wells, suggesting that these chemicals are originated from the surface contamination sources. Mass balance analysis based on reaction stoichiometry reveals that the water chemistry is regulated by three major chemical processes: weathering of silicate/ carbonate minerals, input of C1/SO$_4$ salts, and nitrate generating processes. The results show that mineral weathering is the most dominating factor regulating the groundwater chemistry. However, the groundwaters with the higher salt concentration indicate the larger mineral weathering effect, suggesting that some part of the mineral weathering effect is also associated with the anthropogenic activities such as limes applied to the cultivated lands, carbonates (CaCO$_3$) in the cement materials.

  • In order to evaluate the distribution and behaviour of atmospheric particulate metals in high-altitude area, we collected 22 aerosol samples using a high volume air sampler at Soback Mt. Meteorological Observation Station from Jan. to Nov. 1993 and analysed for metals (Al, Fe, Mg, Na, Ca, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb) with ICP/AES and ICP/MS. Although sampling site is located in high-altitude and far from local sources of atmospheric pollutants, enrichments of metals are 2 times higher than those of western coastal reural area. This fact may imply that of metallic pollutants in the coastal rural site were came from further western side (e.g. China), atmospheric metals in this study area contain the signal of metropolitan cities located in the main wind direction (NNW). Sea salts are negligible in the aerosol particle population because reference elements of sea salts (Na, Mg) are all originated from soil particles. The contents of soil particles in aerosols are highest in spring and lowest in winter. Atmospheric enriched elements (Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb) are diluted with soil particles, especially during the yellow sand period. The results of factor analysis suggest possibility of interpreting their chemical significance in terms of sources (soil, pollutants) and gas-particle conversion processes (formation of ammonium sulfates, ammonium nitrates and/or their mixtures).

  • Due to the revised Korean standard KS L 5201 for Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), the use of mixed cement has grown from 5% to 10%. This study investigates the hydration behavior of $C_3A$, asit is a cement mixture that is more commonly used than granulated blast furnace slag or limestone alone. Paste samples were prepared with either granulated blast furnace slag or limestone alone. Each sample was compared with the widely used Rietveld method with a cement mixture containing blast furnace slag or limestone. The hydration behavior of $C_3A$ in each OPC sample was assessed and results were analyzed. Granulated blast furnace slag promotes a high initial level of ettringite, but as the days passed, it promotes an increase in monosulfate, leading to cracks and expansion due to the penetration of sulfates in the solution. However, when limestone is added to the mixture, a transformation of ettringite to monosulfate occurs in the presence of the $CaCO_3$ in the limestone. It is considered that this produces hemi-carbonate and mono-carbonate and thus maintains the ettringite level.

  • This paper summarizes the results of experimental research, and artificial intelligence methods focused on determination of compressive strength of lightweight cement mortar with silica fume and fly ash after sulfate attack. The artificial neural network and the support vector machine were selected as artificial intelligence methods. Lightweight cement mortar mixtures containing silica fume and fly ash were prepared in this study. After specimens were cured in $20{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ waters for 28 days, the specimens were cured in different sulfate concentrations (0%, 1% $MgSO_4^{-2}$, 2% $MgSO_4^{-2}$, and 4% $MgSO_4^{-2}$ for 28, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 210 and 365 days. At the end of these curing periods, the compressive strengths of lightweight cement mortars were tested. The input variables for the artificial neural network and the support vector machine were selected as the amount of cement, the amount of fly ash, the amount of silica fumes, the amount of aggregates, the sulfate percentage, and the curing time. The compressive strength of the lightweight cement mortar was the output variable. The model results were compared with the experimental results. The best prediction results were obtained from the artificial neural network model with the Powell-Beale conjugate gradient backpropagation training algorithm.

  • When glycosaminoglycan (GAG)-degrating enzymes were measured in normal human stool suspensions, all 5 tested different stools degraded titrable heparin and acharan sulfate. GAG-degrading bacteria were screened from the isolates of human stools. Among them, HJ-15 had the most potent activities of heparinases (GAGs-degrading enzymes). However, HJ-15 produced the enzyme even if in the media without heparin. Acharan sulfate lyase was induced by acharan sulfate and heparin. Heparinase production was also induced by these GAGs. These enzymes, acharan sulfate lyase and heparinase, were produced in exponential and stationary phase of HJ-15 growth, respectively. Optimal pHs of the acharan sulfate lyase and heparinase activities were 7.2 and 7.5 respectively. the biochemical properties of HJ-15 was similar to those of B. stercoris. However, difference from B. stercoris was utilization of raffinose. this HJ-15 also degraded chondroitin sulfates A and C.

  • Results from the most recent decade of Mars' missions to Mars highlight a liquid water and water-ice sculpted landscape. Evidence includes layered sedimentary sequences with weathered outcrops, debris flows, fluvial valleys, alluvial fans, deltas, glacial and periglacial landscapes, and geochemical/mineralogical signatures of aqueous activity, including the formation of sulfates and clays, and the leaching and deposition of elements such as potassium, thorium, and iron. Such evidence indicates weathered zones and possible paleosols in stratigraphic sequences, transport of water and rock materials to sedimentary basins, and the possible formation of extensive transient lakes and possibly transient oceans on Mars. This new evidence is consistent with Viking-era geologic investigations that reported magmatic-driven flooding, ponding to form large water bodies in the northern plains, and transient (tens of thousand of years) hydrological cycles. It may even indicate aqueous activity at present. Both endogenic (magmatic driven) and exogenic (both impact cratering and changes in orbital parameters) have influenced paleohydrologic and environmental change on Mars. Abundance of water and dynamic activity would be decisively important for the possibility of past and present life on Mars.

  • Purpose: In this study, porous type I collagen scaffolds were cross-linked using dehydrothermal(DHT) treatment and/or 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethyl aminopropyl) carbodiimide(EDC), in the presence and absence of chondroitin-6-sulfate(CS) and cultured autologous chondrocytes(Chondro) for cartilage regeneration. Methods: Cartilage defects were created in the proximal part of the ear of New Zealand rabbits. Four prepared types of scaffolds(n=4) were inserted. The groups included Chondro-Collagen-DHT(Group 1), Chondro- Collagen-DHT-EDC(Group 2), Chondro-CS-Collagen- DHT(Group 3), and Chondro-CS-Collagen-DHT-EDC (Group 4). Histomorphometric analysis and cartilage-specific gene expression of the reconstructed tissues were evaluated 4, 8, and 12 weeks after implantation. Results: EDC cross-linked groups 2 and 4 regenerated more cartilage than other groups. However, calcification was observed in the 4th week after implantation. CS did not increase chondrogenesis in all groups. Cartilage-specific type II collagen mRNA expression increased in the course of time in all groups. Conclusion: EDC cross-linking methods maintain the scaffold and promote extracellular matrix production of chondrocytes.
