To this end, this study applied the context-pattern analysis method, which was known as one of the qualitative research approaches, to provide proper and effective evaluations of self-sufficiency program. The analysis shows that the context of the self-sufficiency program consists of such sub-contextual components as 'market economy', 'social service system', 'self-sufficiency system', 'self-sufficiency program', 'self-sufficiency program participant', 'procedural experiences of the program', 'outcomes of self-sufficiency program', and 'meaning of the self-sufficiency program'. Furthermore, such patterns as 'decreased vitality of self-sufficiency system', 'service flow', 'journey to the self-sufficiency', and 'sequences to small success', were also presented. Based on these findings, this study suggests policy and practice implications, and subsequent related research topics.

For this study, a sample of 775 self-sufficiency program participating workers completed depression questionnaire, optimism scale and willingness for self-sufficiency scale. The data was analyzed using the Baron & Kenny's moderating effect verification method. The results of the analysis showed that depression had a significant negative effect on willingness for self-sufficiency, and optimism had a significant positive effect on willingness for self-sufficiency. The results verified the moderating effects of optimism on the relationship between depression and willingness for self-sufficiency. On the basis of the results, We discussed that optimism can reduce the negative effect of depression on willingness for self-sufficiency and improve willingness for self-sufficiency. We discussed the optimism promotion program as an intervention method to improve willingness for self-sufficiency in self-sufficiency program participating workers.

The major findings that were drawn from this study were as follows : Frist, the difference in the self-sufficiency level of their family perceived between husband and married immigrant women was not significant. But, in the level of self-sufficiency will, the level perceived by the husband was higher than it of the women significantly. Second, the hierarchical regression analysis showed that the age of the women(${\ss}=.31$) affected most significantly the self-sufficiency in rural multicultural families, followed by the labour morale of the women(${\ss}=.25$), labour morale of the husband(${\ss}=.20$), academic background of the husband(${\ss}=.19$), academic background of the women(${\ss}=.12$), spouse support level of the women toward the husband(${\ss}=.12$). Third, as a result of a hierarchical regression analysis, the self-sufficiency will variables had more explanatory power on it than social-demographic and/or social support variables. In conclusion, based on results of this study, several plans improving self-sufficiency of the rural multicultural family were suggested. Findings of this study may be used as a basic material to establish the policy supporting self-sufficiency in rural multicultural families.

  • Self-sufficiency has been recognized as one of the most important welfare goals for women in the domestic violence field since the welfare reform in the U.S. A qualitative research design was conducted to explore the self-sufficiency experience of Korean-American single mothers with the history of domestic violence in poverty. The meaning of 'self-sufficiency' to participants is that a continuing task or process in life to move toward being independent mentally as well as economically. Their challenges toward self-sufficiency include the period of restoration of their potentials for self-sufficiency destroyed by domestic violence victimization and divorce, and the period of developing their sustainability for self-sufficiency. Their needs for 'help and support similar to care from the woman's parents' home', 'welfare service of select and concentration', 'mature dependency and self-sufficiency', and 'self-sufficiency from survival to dream come true' to cope with the challenges formentioned are reported. Concrete strategies for the development of self-sufficiency polices and services sensitive to immigrant single mothers with the history of domestic violence are suggested.

To fulfill this purpose, all data for this analysis were collected from participants who belongs to the 31 local self-sufficiency centers in Seoul. The findings are as follows. First, we found that there were no statistically significant differences among the groups of the quality of self-sufficiency services and the job satisfaction and the effectiveness of self-sufficiency according to the type of self-sufficiency program. This means all the same degrees of effectiveness that participants of social employment program and market type program and self-sufficiency community was perceived. In addition, although there were no statistically significant differences among the groups of the quality of self-sufficiency services and the job satisfaction and the effectiveness of self-sufficiency according to the type of self-sufficiency program, we found that the differences among groups existed partially with theoretical model established in this study. Through the above results, the policy limitation and suggestion were presented about effectiveness of current self-sufficiency.

While males' willingness for self-sufficiency were found to be higher with older age, possessing no debt, and higher family support, femails' willingness for self-sufficiency were found to be higher when they felt less depressed, and received more support from professionals and their family. Based on these findings, it was confirmed that family support played an important role both in male and female participants, and was found that different factors were associated with willingness for self-sufficiency in male and female program participants. It was also discussed that policy and micro-level intervention need to consider the gender differences in promoting willingness for self-sufficiency.

  • Self-sufficiency of the female victims of prostitution has been understood as a 'result' at a particular moment focusing on an economic self-sufficiency. Overcoming such limitation, this study originates from a problem posing that evaluating self-sufficiency of the female victims of prostitution should be approached as a series of 'processes' in which experiences of the victims are integrated. The methodology of the study included a questionnaire survey with questions designed based on the self-sufficiency experiences which were analyzed through an in-depth interview with 34 female victims of prostitution. The questionnaire survey was conducted with 243 female victims of prostitution, and construct validity and reliability were verified. As a result of an exploratory factor analysis, a validity of scale in four factors and 24 questions was verified. A reliability of each factor was high ranging from .823 to .871. It could be achieved to make a relatively invisible process of self-sufficiency visible by developing the scale. Subsequently it complements the existing concept of self-sufficiency and overcomes limitations of measuring its results, hence reflecting the reality of the self-sufficiency practices.

  • This study explores the moderating effects of economic stress in the relationship between organizational devotion and emotional self-sufficiency of the self-sufficient program participants. 698 persons who lived in Taegu participated in this study. Multiple regression analysis was adopted. Results indicate that higher level of organizational devotion is positively related to the higher self-sufficiency. In addition, economic stress moderated the effect of organizational devotion on emotional self-sufficiency. Practical implications of this study are two folds; One is that in order to increase emotional self-sufficiency, sense of community should be put into consideration; The other is that approach for decreasing economic stress should be included in the program for self-sufficiency. Overall, this study lays a groundwork for the self-sufficiency of the participants in the self-sufficient program.
