To assess tunnel safety, cracks in tunnel lining are measured by inspectors, who observe cracks with their naked eyes and record them. But manual inspection is slow, and measured crack data is subjective. Therefore, this study proposes inspection system fur measuring cracks in tunnel lining and providing objective crack data to be used in safety assessment. The system consists of On-vehicle system and Laboratory system. On-Vehicle system acquires image data with line CCD camera on scanning along the tunnel lining. Laboratory system extracts crack information from the acquired image using image processing. Measured crack information is crack thickness, length and orientation. To improve accuracy of crack recognition, the geometric properties and patterns of cracks in concrete structure were applied to image processing. The proposed system was verified with experiments in both laboratory environment and field environment such as subway tunnel.

A monitoring system for the subway structures using prestrained FBG sensors fixed with partially stripped fibers was developed. The sensor packages had pre-strain controllable fixtures. Tensile and compressive strain of the structure could be measured without slip. The FBG sensor system was applied to the concrete lining structure in Taegu subway. Near the structure, the narrow tunnel construction, for the electric power cables and telecommunication cables, started. We wanted to measure the deformations of the subway structures due to the construction by the FBG sensor. The applied sensors had the gauge length of 1 meter to overcome the inhomogeneity of the concrete material with enough length. In order to fix tightly to the structure, the partially stripped parts of the sensor glued to the package and slip phenomenon between fiber and acrylate jacket was prevented. Prestrain of the sensor was imposed by controlling the two fixed points with bolts and nuts in order to measure compressive strain as well as tensile strain. The behavior of subway lining structure could be monitored very well.

This study aims to design a tunnel part model for underpass and subway lines that correspond to tunnel sector among the underground facilities(structure types) covered in the integrated map of underground spaces. For this purpose, we compared and reviewed the characteristics of international standards related to tunnel data models. As a result, it was found that CityGML 3.0 - Tunnel module was the most suitable for designing a 3D tunnel data model. Afterwards we reviewed the legal and institutional regulations to derive the standard elements of the 3D tunnel data model. Then we conducted a demand survey targeting experts in related fields to derive standard elements for addition and extension of underpasses and subway lines. Based on the above process, we designed and presented a 3D tunnel data model using UML. This study is expected to be meaningful as a basic study to improve the utilization of tunnel model in the integrated map of underground spaces.

Underground Subway station's air pollutants are introduced from the indoor or outdoor. And Radon is a major pollutant in the subway station. Radioactive substances Radon is occuring naturally in granite tunnel wall and underground water. Especially inert gas Radon that causes lung cancer in human is anywhere but 5678 S.M.R.T. tunnels deep and pass through the granite plaque have a lot of Radon. The Radon concentration is determined by the following reasons : radon content of soil and concrete, underground water, ventilation, pressure difference, building structure, temperature, etc. So Radon concentration is hard to predict. And we can't only ventilate owing to era of high oil prices. This study focuses on our efforts for the reduction of Radon concentration. And the purpose is to provide basically datas of specially managed 15 subway station's Radon concentration.
The selected structure for the value engineering review is one section of cut and cover tunnel for Seoul Subway Line 9. The primary focus of the review is on the optimisation of the structures to save cost on the existing Line 9 contracts through variation of the design criteria as it affects the permanent works. This is to be achieved through comparison with design criteria for other selected international subways. Criteria resulting from the review must not compromise public safety and durability for the 100 year design life.

Ground-borne vibration is one of the main causes of environmental impact from subway systems. The vibration resulting from track-train interaction is transuutted through the tunnel structure and the surrounding ground to adjacent buildings. This paper provides a summary of proposed noise and vibration criteria, a review of the ground vibration propagation mechanism and the theoretical isolation effectivenesss of each of the following underground transit systems : track, tunnel and vehicle itself.
A certain amount of random vibration excitation to subway track is caused by subway operation. This excitation is transmitted through track foundation, tunnel, soil medium, and ground building to the ground and ground structure, causing vibration. The vibration affects ground building. In this study, the results of ANSYS numerical simulation was used to establish back-propagation (BP) neural network model. Moreover, a back-propagation neural network model consisting of five input neurons, one hidden layer, 11 hidden-layer neurons, and three output neurons was used to analyze and calculate the vertical Z-vibration level of New Capital's ground buildings of Qingdao Metro phase I Project (Line M3). The Z-vibration level under different working conditions was calculated from monolithic roadbed, steel-spring floating slab roadbed, and rubber-pad floating slab roadbed under the working condition of center point of 0-100 m. The steel-spring floating slab roadbed was used in the New Capital area to monitor the subway operation vibration in this area. Comparing the monitoring and prediction results, it was found that the prediction results have a good linear relationship with lower error. The research results have good reference and guiding significance for predicting vibration caused by subway operation.

Indoor radon($^{222}Rn$) concentrations of subway stations in Seoul area were measured to survey the environmental indoor radon levels and to identify sources of radon. The radon concentration of indoor air by method of long-term measuring with a-track detector were surveyed at 232 subway stations from 1998 to 2004. And the radon concentration in ground-water was measured with a method of alpha particle counting. To trace main source of radon, 8 out of 232 stations were selected and their radon concentrations in tunnel and on platform were analyzed. Total geometric mean and arithmetic mean of radon concentrations in all stations from 1998 to 2004 were $1.40{\pm}1.94pCi/L,\;1.65{\pm}1.07$ respectively. Geometric means of radon concentrations on platform and concourse were $1.54{\pm}1.96pCi/L,\;1.23{\pm}1.88pCi/L$ respectively, with higher concentration at the platform than at the concourse. The geological structure was significantly correlated to the indoor radon concentration in subway stations region. Radon concentrations of adjacent tunnel and ground-water of subway station was significantly correlated to the indoor radon concentration in subway stations. And There was a significant difference in radon concentration, depending on the depth levels in platform of subway stations(p<0.05).
For the purpose of determining the thickness of concrete lining and detect of the cavity where may be located behind tunnel lining, IE (Impact-Echo) method it effectively useful in the tunnel safety diagnosis and the quality control during the construction. As a part of case study, we applied IE method to various tunnel structure types such as road tunnel and subway tunnel constructed by NATM (New Austrian Tunnelling Method) and ASSM (American Steel Support Method). As tunnel specifications estimated from this method were compared with coring data, design drawing and other survey results, it was very good agreement with each other. In conclusion, we verified that IE method shows an accurate and reliable result. The conventional interpretation of IE method in frequency domain gives only vertical information at a certain point. However, the interpretation using time-frequency analysis and depth section imaging technique from two dimensional profiling surveys can show more reliable information about structure inside.
Recently, a longitudinal tunnel construction has increased because of subway construction extension, geomorphological effect and the development of construction Technologies etc. When the fire occurs in a tunnel and an underground structure, the many damage of human life and the economic losses are caused. In Korea, fire resistance character study of a tunnel and an underground structure is proceeding. However, when a concrete is exposed to high temperature, study of load carrying capacity reduction and stability evaluation for spalling of a concrete is not enough. Therefore in this study, fire resistance character of a concrete evaluated according to time heating temperature curve(RABT and RWS) and a result compared on virtual fire accident in order to apply fire scenario. Also this study performed thermo-mechanical coupled analysis of a FEM-based numerical technique and estimated fire-induced damage of a tunnel and an underground structure.
