  • A structural coupling method is developed for the dynamic analysis of a nonlinear structure with concentrated nonlinear hinge joints or sliding lines. Component mode synthesis method is extended to couple substructures and the nonlinear models. In order to verify the improved coupling method, a numerical plate model consisting of two substructures and torsional springs, is synthesized by using the proposed method and its model parameters are compared with analysis data. Then the coupling method is applied to a three-substructure-model with the nonlinearity of sliding lines between the substructures. The coupled structural model is verified from its dynamic analysis. The analysis results show that the improved coupling method is adequate for the structural nonlinear analyses with the nonlinear hinge and sliding mode condition.

  • The investigation on vehicle-bridge coupling system (VBCS) is crucial in bridge design, bridge condition evaluation, and vehicle overload control. A real-time hybrid testing (RTHT) method for VBCS (RTHT-VBCS) is proposed in this paper for accurately and economically disclosing the dynamic performance of VBCSs. In the proposed method, one of the carriages is chosen as the experimental substructure loaded by servo-hydraulic actuator loading system in the laboratory, and the remaining carriages as well as the bridge structure are chosen as the numerical substructure numerically simulated in one computer. The numerical substructure and the experimental substructure are synchronized at their coupling points in terms of force equilibrium and deformation compatibility. Compared to the traditional iteration experimental method and the numerical simulation method, the proposed RTHT-VBCS method could not only obtain the dynamic response of VBCS, but also economically analyze various working conditions. Firstly, the theory of RTHT-VBCS is proposed. Secondly, numerical models of VBCS for RTHT method are presented. Finally, the feasibility and accuracy of the RTHT-VBCS are preliminarily validated by real-time hybrid simulations (RTHSs). It is shown that, the proposed RTHT-VBCS is feasible and shows great advantages over the traditional methods, and the proposed models can effectively represent the VBCS for RTHT method in terms of the force equilibrium and deformation compatibility at the coupling point. It is shown that the results of the single-degree-of-freedom model and the train vehicle model are match well with the referenced results. The RTHS results preliminarily prove the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed RTHT-VBCS.

  • The finite element analysis for rotor bearing systems has been an essential tool for design, identification, and diagnosis of rotating machinery. Among others, the unbalance response analysis is fundamental in the vibration analysis of rotor bearing systems because rotating unbalance is recognized as a common sourve of vibration in rotating machinery. However there still remains a problem in the aspect of computational efficiency for unbalance response analysis of large rotor bearing systems. Gyroscopic terms and local bearing parameters in rotor bearing systems often make matters worse in unbalance response computation due to the complicated dynamic properties such as rotational speed dependency and/or anisotropy. The present paper proposes an efficient method for unbalance responses of multi-span rotor bearing systems. An improved substructure synthesis scheme is introduced which makes it possible to compute unbalance responses of the system by coupling unbalance responses of substructures that are of self adjoint problem with small order matrices. The present paper also suggests a scheme to easily deal with gyroscopic tems and local, coupling or bearing parameters. The proposed method causes no errors even though the computational effort is reduced drastically. The present method is demonstrated through three test examples.

  • Substructure coupling or component mode synthesis may be employed in the solution of dynamic problems for large, flexible structures. The model is partitioned into several subdomains, and a generalized Craig-Bampton representation is derived. In this paper the mode sets (normal modes, constraint modes) is employed for model reduction. A generalized model reduction procedure is described. Vaious reduction methods that use constraint modes is described in detail. As examples, a flexible structure and a 10 DOF damped system are analyzed. Comparison with a conventional reduction method based on a complete model is made via eigenpair and dynamic responses.

  • This paper presents a precise and stable time integration method for dynamic analysis of vibration or multibody systems. A total system is divided into several subsystems and their responses are calculated separately, while the coupling effect is treated equivalently as constant force during time steps. By using iterative procedure to improve equivalent coupling forces, a precise and stable solution is obtained. Some examples such as a seismic response and multibody analyses were carried out to demonstrate its usefulness.

  • In periodically repeated cyclic structures, small property irregularity of their substructures often causes significant difference in their dynamic responses. which results in unpredicted premature failures. The small irregularity and the resulting phenomenon are called the mistuning and the vibration localization. respectively. In this paper, the vibration localization phenomena due to mistuned coupling effects are investigated. To effectively achieve the objective, a simple coupled multi-pendulum system Is employed. The results show that if there exists some coupling stiffness irregularity, vibration localization may occur and becomes more predominant as the number of substructures increases.

  • The Substructure Synthesis means the technology to predict the dynamic properties of an assembly from the properties of its components, or to predict the effect of a modification on a structure. The FRF Based Substructuring method is a kind of the Substructure Synthesis and very useful to predict the efficiency of the product in the early stage of development. Especially, the Hybrid FBS method is very useful to predict the vehicle NVH characteristics after modifying some components of the vehicle. Target components can be established on the basis of test models and FE models of the prototype constructed in the early stage of development. In this study, the Hybrid FBS method was applied to vehicle subframe and car-body in order to reduce vehicle interior noise induced by engine exciting force.

  • An accurate substructural synthesis method including random responses synthesis, frequency-response functions synthesis and mid-order modes synthesis is developed based on rigorous substructure description, dynamic condensation and coupling. An entire structure can firstly be divided into several substructures according to different functions, geometric and dynamic characteristics. Substructural displacements are expressed exactly by retained mid-order fixed-interfacial normal modes and residual constraint modes. Substructural interfacial degree-of-freedoms are eliminated by interfacial displacements compatibility and forces equilibrium between adjacent substructures. Then substructural mode vibration equations are coupled to form an exact-condensed synthesized structure equation, from which structural mid-order modes are calculated accurately. Furthermore, substructural frequency-response function equations are coupled to yield an exact-condensed synthesized structure vibration equation in frequency domain, from which the generalized structural frequency-response functions are obtained. Substructural frequency-response functions are calculated separately by using the generalized frequency-response functions, which can be assembled into an entire-structural frequency-response function matrix. Substructural power spectral density functions are expressed by the exact-synthesized substructural frequency-response functions, and substructural random responses such as correlation functions and mean-square responses can be calculated separately. The accuracy and capacity of the proposed substructure synthesis method is verified by numerical examples.
