  • Using the Selective Area Growth (SAG) technology of Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD), we successfully integrated an active device and passive devices on the same substrate. In other words, we integrated a Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA) as an active device and an S-bend waveguide and a Multi Mode Interference (MMI) waveguide as passive devices. The SOA is successfully integrated with passive devices on the same substrate. The Cross-Gain Modulation (XGM) characteristic of the integrated SOA and the loss of an MMI and an S-bend waveguide were measured. Measured XGM characteristics of the SOA showed an extinction ratio of 8.82 dB. The total loss of the MMI and S-bend waveguide was 18 dB.

  • Analog ferrite phase shifters based on rectangular waveguides which are used as component of passive phased array system have high power handling capability, but it is heavy and has high cost to fabricate. In this paper, we propose an analog ferrite phase shifter using substrate integrated waveguide(SIW), which has low cost and is easy to fabricate because it uses printed circuit board(PCB) process. The proposed structure is fabricated by using centeral dielectric material removal for inserting a ferrite bar. The measured results show that the proposed structure has not only $5.1^{\circ}$/mm phase variation but also return loss variation under 12.9 dB. Therefore, it is expected that the proposed phase shifter can plays an role to reduce weight and to has low cost on the phased array system.

  • We propose a novel planar optical interconnection scheme for 100 Gb/s optical packet address detection, which consists of waveguide grating couplers and a diffractive microlens integrated on a glass substrate 3-dimensionally. Length and duty cycle of the grating couplers have been determined on the bases of the ray-optic propagation-mode analysis in a slab waveguide and of the rigorous coupled-wave diffraction analysis for out-coupled radiation-modes. The 3-dimensionally integrated planar optics makes it possible to connect each address bit-signals of $TE_ 0-waveguide$ mode to the detector with a power uniformity of 6.4 % and a total coupling efficiency of 72.3 %.

  • In this paper, the SIW(Substrate Integrated Waveguide)-based feeding antenna for the application of SDR(Software Defined Radar) is designed and manufactured. It is usually well-known that SIWs are easily integrated on PCB and have low transmission loss toward high powered input signal. Also, it is recommended that SIWs are strongly immunized to Electromagnetic Interferences(EMI). In particular, the manufactured antennas are loaded on the USRP(Universal Software Radio Peripheral) platform and employed to detect target RCS as an experiment in this paper. The operating frequency of the proposed antenna is in ISM(Industrial, Scientific and Medical) band(2.4~2.48 GHz) and the measured gain is over 8 dBi at 2.44 GHz.

  • Recently, SIW(Substrate Integrated Waveguide) is intensively studied because of its high Q and easy integration with other devices. However, lacks of analytic characterization of SIW makes it difficult an accurate design of a SIW filter along the conventional filter design method. In this paper, two kinds of a three-stage 10 GHz SIW bandpass filter of fractional bandwidth 10% are designed using 3D EM simulator HFSS based on the recently presented EM filter design method. Two types of a modified CPW to SIW transition is proposed and employed as a SIW to microstrip transition necessary for measurement. The transitions provide an easy measurement with commercial test fixture by TRL calibration. The two proposed transitions are included in the SIW filters. The fabricated filters shows the center frequency of 10 GHz, fractional bandwidth 10%, a return loss of about 12 dB, and insertion loss of about 0.8 dB.

  • An SIW cavity is a useful tool to design an FSS which shows a rapid roll-off rate and insensitivity to polarizations and incident angles of electromagnetic waves. However, due to its high Q-factor, the FSS also shows narrow bandwidth which is undesirable for high-capacity communication. To address this drawback, we propose a novel technique to enhance the bandwidth while maintaining similar frequency response characteristics and minimizing the increase of the overall thickness of the SIW cavity FSS. In order to verify the performance of the technique, simulated frequency responses will be provided. Also, a parameter which affects the bandwidth will be studied. Finally the stability to polarizations and incident angles will be observed through the simulated results.

  • This paper reports on a fabrication of novel substrate integrated waveguide (SIW)-based shielded stripline applicable to the broadband transverse electromagnetic (TEM) single-mode propagation. We suggested a structure for half-SIW and half-shielded stripline, which combined through the benzocyclobutene (BCB) bonding layer. The electrical interconnection between the sidewall of anisotropic wet-etched silicon and patterned BCB layers is measured subsequent to the metalization on the side wall. The proposed SIW-based shielded stripline has great potential in terms of simple fabrication, integration with planar circuits and monolithic system fabricated on a SIW structure.

  • In this paper, H-plane filtering-horn antenna operating at millimeter frequency band is proposed with embedded filter and three-layered dielectric lens for frequency selection and maintenance of main beam direction, respectively. The waveguide-typed filter and H-plane sectoral horn antenna are replaced with considerably size-reduced PCB substrate-typed filtering antenna using via fences and several posts. The waveguide-typed filter and H-plane sectoral horn antenna were designed in air-filled waveguide and then combined into size-reduced PCB substrate. For the control of the thickness of dielectric lens, single and multi dielectric lens have been employed. As a result of antenna gain, 8 and 13.5 dBi have been obtained at 41.5 GHz, respectively, from the simulations of single and multi-lens antennas.

  • Post-wall waveguide structures have attracted a great deal of attention for micro- and millimeter-wave applications. One of the waveguide’s applications is a slotted waveguide array. In order to design the slotted array, the characteristics of a slot unit alone on the post-wall waveguide should be investigated. In this paper, a method for extracting the S-parameters of a unit slot is proposed. This simple method requires only two kinds of waveguides: waveguides without a slot unit and waveguides with a slot unit. Three kinds of slot units are fabricated, and the extracted results show a high level of agreement with predicted (simulated) results. With this method, the equivalent slot length can also be found.
