The purpose of this study is to develop a faceted classification scheme linked with a thesaurus(FCT) to more effectively organize documents according to subject, by transforming the current Korean Decimal Classification system(KDC) into a faceted classification scheme and linking it with Korea’s National Library Subject Headings. This combination should represent complex subjects more clearly, allow users to change citation order, and facilitate the addition of new subjects to the KDC scheme. Furthermore, by linking a thesaurus to the classification scheme, it is possible to share facets and expand the conceptual level of headings through the thesaurus descriptors.

This study aims to improve subject retrieval by constructing the hypertext-based thesaurus to provide a browsing interface to a thesaurus. The experimental system used IBM 486 DXII as a hardware, C++ language as a programming language and Hangul Window 3.1 version as a user interface. The results of this study are summarized as follows : (1) The experimental hypertext-based thesaurus can be used as an efficient search aid for query formulation for the retrieval of bibliographic information. (2) The initial access to the hypertext-based thesaurus is via a keyword index. This index is consist of all the words used to form thesaurus terms, whether descriptors or nondescriptors. (3) Hypertext-based thesaurus allow bookmark button and history button to alleviating the problem of disorientation. (4) This system allow an end-user to view a rich variety of inter-term relationships and a complete conceptus of associations through the information space in a nonsequential manner.

To search based on the functional classification or provenance is not easy for users, and the key word-based information retrieval presents only simple words matching with the title of the records. The Presidential Archive of Korea developed a subject classification scheme to improve the convenience of searching for various records and came up with a subject thesaurus based on the scheme that utilizes the terms appearing on the title of the records and the terms used by the users who searched the portal or requested information disclosure. This research presents the development process of subject thesaurus. It also presents the utilization methods for records management work and services.

This study compared and analyzed, after extracting the subject titles related to Korea and Japan from the second version of Chinese Classified Thesaurus, the number of titles and characteristics according to the subjects. The analysis result shows that total number of Korea-related titles including proper nouns was 215, which is limited in comparison to that of Japan, in terms of the number and diversity of the subjects. Particularly, the CCT does not accurately reflect the current state of Korea as it uses the word 'Josun' to denote Korea and calls Korean War 'Josun War' as well as only recording it in North Korean history. Meanwhile, Japan-related subject titles include many that show the complicated historical relationship between Japan and China, such as Manchurian Incident and Japan-China War.

This study evaluates representability and comprehensivity of the Theasurus in theeconomics and industry fields of the "General Thesaurus of Newspaper Articles." The methodsused in the study were, first, indexing of the pages covering economics and industry articlesusing the Thesaurus and second, comparing the Thesaurus terms with the words collectedfrom the newspapers articles and glossaries. The study clarifies the following problems whichmight occur in the construction and use of newspaper thesaurus: specificity of the subjectconcepts, separation of component concept, preference relationship between descriptors andentry terms, the methods of recording of proper nouns and allocation of terms among thesubject areas concern.he subject areas concern.

The thesaurus can control the headings in a classification scheme and can serve as an index of the classification scheme itself. In records management, the thesaurus controls functional terms and expands the access point of search to complement the functional classification scheme. In recent years, ISO 25964, the international standard for thesaurus construction, has been revised because of changes in the information environment and the development of thesaurus construction and utilization systems. Part 1 of ISO 15489, the international standard for overall records management, was also amended in 2016. In addition, the Integrated Public Sector Vocabulary (IPSV) in the UK, EuroVoc in Europe, and Functions of New Zealand (FONZ) in New Zealand have been effectively building and linking thesauri to reflect recent trends. In this study, we propose a thesaurus construction guideline for systematic record management in terms of related standards and cases, and suggest an improvement plan for the thesaurus construction guideline in Korea.

The subject heading is an elaborate access tool for subject browsing and searching in information retrieval environment. The purpose of this study is to suggest the applicable facets to subject headings in Korea. First, the concepts of subject and the definitions of facets were investigated in the literature review. Second, six cases including OCLC's FAST, PRECIS, "Thesaurus construction and use", CC $7^{th}$ edition, BC $2^{nd}$ Edition, and UDC $3^{rd}$ Edition were analyzed to focus on configuration of facets as case studies. Based on the results, twenty-two facets were proposed including Topical, Event, Geography, Chronology, Personal and Corporate Name, Title, Form, Genre, Language, and Person facets as 11 top facets. Also, Topical-Thing/Entity and Topical-Action/Status, Part, Kind, Property, Whole, Material, Patient, Product, By-Product and Agent facets as sub-facets of Topical facet.

This study is to develop a new automatic system for the Korean thesaurus browser by which we can automatically control all the processes of searching queries such as, representation, generation, extension and construction of searching strategy and feedback searching. The system in this study is programmed by Delphi 4.0(PASCAL) and consists of database system, automatic indexing, clustering technique, establishing and expressing thesaurus, and automatic information retrieval technique. The results proved by this system are as follows: 1)By using the new automatic thesaurus browser developed by the new algorithm, we can perform information retrieval, automatic indexing, clustering technique, establishing and expressing thesaurus, information retrieval technique, and retrieval feedback. Thus it turns out that even the beginner user can easily access special terms about the field of a specific subject. 2) The thesaurus browser in this paper has such merits as the easiness of establishing, the convenience of using, and the good results of information retrieval in terms of the rate of speed, degree, and regeneration. Thus, it t m out very pragmatic.

The purpose of this study is to develop a thesaurus for women's oral history in modern Korea. Literature review and case studies for four thesauri were performed for this study with which a thesaurus was built based upon the index terms in oral history records. The process of developing the thesaurus consisted of five steps. First, there are 1,784 index terms from the oral history records by 53 modern Korean women were extracted and analyzed. Second, possible terms for the thesaurus were selected through regular meetings with experts in the fields of information organization and women's oral history. Third, relationships between terms were defined by focusing on equivalence, hierarchy, and association. Fourth, after developing a Web-based thesaurus management system, terms and relationships were input to the system. Fifth, terms and relationships were again reviewed by experts from the relevant fields. As a result, the thesaurus comprise of 1,076 terms and those terms were classified to 39 broad subject areas, including proper nouns, such as geographic names, places, person's names, corporate names, and others, and it will be expanded with more oral history records from other people during the same period.

Thesaurus, a well-known form of controlled vocabulary, has been widely used for indexing and searching of information during the last 50 years. There also have been developments of international and national standards to provide guidelines for developing thesaurus in diverse subject areas. In recent years, the revisions of thesaurus-related standards have been made. Among them are ISO 25964 and BS 8723. This article examines the current status of revision of these standards, and discusses its implications. Based on this examination, it suggests functional requirements of thesaurus in the present information environment, and also proposes elements needed for the development of these functions.
