  • La/sub 2/3-x/Li/sub 3x/□/sub 1/3-2x/TiO₃ compounds with x=0.13 and 0.12 were prepared by slow cooling (x=0.13) and rapid quenching (x=0.12) into the liquid nitrogen after sintering at 1350℃ for 6 h. Their crystal structure has been determined by Rietveld refinement of both the powder neutron and X-ray diffraction data. From neutron diffraction data, we found that the main phase was not tetragonal (P4/mmm), but trigonal (R3cH). The refinement of neutron diffraction for the slow cooled samples were in a good agreement with a new model; a mixture of trigonal (R3cH, 45.7 wt%), tetragonal (p4/mmm, 37.0 wt%), and Li/sub 0.57/Ti/sub 0.86/O₂(pbnm, 17.2 wt%), but the quenched sample was found not to contain tetragonal (p4/mmm). X-ray diffraction data couldn't be well fitted because of the Poor scattering factor of lithium ions and the similar reflection patterns among trigonal (R3cH), tetragonal (p4/mmm), and cubic (Pm3m). We also knew that one transport bottlenecks is destroyed by one La vacancy in the case of trigonal (R3cH).

  • The result of design and Partial fabrication of a 1 MVA single phase high temperature superconducting(HTS) transformer for power distributions are presented in this paper. The HTS windings are wound as double pancake windings which have advantages of uniform distribution of high voltage over the windings. the rated primary and secondary voltages are 22.9 kV and 6.6 kV respectively. Four HTS tapes are wound in parallel for secondary windings considering the rated currents of the transformer. The HTS windings will be cooled down to 65 K by natural convection of sub-cooled liquid nitrogen using a single-staged GM-cryocooler in order to make the stability of the HTS windings better. The iron core is designed as shell type and isolated from the liquid nitrogen by an FRP cryostat which have a room temperature bore. After the complete fabrication of the total HTS transformer system, performance test of the transformer will be carried out.

  • The superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) is an electrical power system device that detects the fault current automatically and limits the magnitude of the current below a certain safety level. The SFCL module does not have any electrical resistance below the critical temperature, which facilitates lossless power transmission in the electric power system. Once given the fault current, however, the superconducting conductor exhibits extremely high electrical resistance, and the magnitude of the current is accordingly limited to a low value. Therefore, SFCL should be maintained at a temperature below the critical temperature, which justifies the cryogenic cooling system as a mandatory component. This report is a study which reported on the cooling system for the 154 kV-class hybrid SFCL owned by Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO). Using the cryocooler, the temperature of liquid nitrogen (LN2) was lowered to 71 K. The cryostat was pressurized to 5 bars to improve the dielectric strength of nitrogen and suppress nitrogen bubble foaming during operation of SFCL. The SFCL module was immersed in the liquid nitrogen of the cryostat to maintain the superconducting state. The performance test results of the key components such as cryocooler, LN2 circulation pump, cold box, and pressure builder are shown in this paper.

  • The superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) consists of superconducting coil for limiting the fault current and cryogenic cooling system for keeping the coil in superconducting condition. The study on the insulation design for superconducting coil and cryogenic cooling system should be elaborately performed to develop a high voltage SFCL. In this paper, insulation design of solenoid coil for 13.2kV/630A SFCL is performed through the AC dielectric breakdown test and lightning impulse dielectric strength test. The dependence of dielectric characteristics on the magnitude of liquid nitrogen pressure is also investigated. Through the investigation, it is verified that dielectric characteristics of sub-cooled nitrogen are strongly enhanced by the pressurization. The electrical insulation design of 13.2kV/630A SFCL is performed by applying the experimental results. The successful insulation design for development of 13.2kV/630A SFCL is confirmed by AC dielectric breakdown tests.

  • A high gradient magnetic (HGM) separator prototype with the $2^{nd}$ generation high temperature superconducting (2G HTS) magnetic system operated in sub-cooled nitrogen is presently under development at NRC "Kurchatov Institute" (Moscow, Russia). The main goal of the project is an attempt to shift away from the complicated liquid helium cryostats towards simple cryocooler-based nitrogen cryogenics as much more convenient for HGM separators industrial applications. Using of commercial HTS tapes allows to get a sufficient level of magnetic fields and extraction forces with low energy consumption. The expected operational parameters of the device are 1.2-1.5 T in the empty operational gap and up to 3 T on the ferromagnetic filters. In this paper we briefly describe the design of the HTS rotary separator prototype with the horizontally oriented rotor axis and propose different types of ferromagnetic filters intended for weakly magnetic ores enrichment.

  • In this paper, the design of a IMVA single-phase high temperature superconducting(HTS) power transformer with BSCCO-2223 HTS tapes is presented. The rated voltages of each sides of the transformer are 22.9 ㎸ and 6.6 ㎸, respectively The winding of 1MVA HTS transformer is consisted of double pancake type HTS windings, which have advantages of insulation and distribution of high voltage, and are cooled by subcooled liquid nitrogen of 65K. Four HTS tapes were wound in parallel for the windings of low voltage side and the four parallel conductors are transposed. The design of 1MVA HTS transformer, a shell type core made of laminated silicon steel plate is chosen, and the core is separated with the windings by a cryostat with a room temperature bore. The cryostat made of non-magnetic and non-conducting material and a liquid nitrogen sub-cooling system is designed in order to maintain the coolant's temperature of 65K. For electromagnetic analysis of 1MVA HTS transformer, a finite element method of an axis of symmetry is used. The maximum perpendicular component of magnetic flux density of pancake windings is about 0.15T. And through analyzing the magnetic field distribution, an optimal winding arrangement of 1MVA HTS transformer is obtained.

  • The superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) is an electric power device that limits the fault current immediately in a power grid. Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) has been developing a 154 kV, 2 kA SFCL since 2011 to protect power grids from increasing fault current and improve the stability and quality of electric power. This SFCL adopts 2G YBCO wires and operates at 71 K and 5 bars. In this paper, a cooling system for the 154 kV SFCL and its cooling test results are reported. This cooling system uses a Stirling-type cooler to make sub-cooled liquid nitrogen ($LN_2$), which cools the superconductor modules of the SFCL. The $LN_2$ is circulated between the cooler and the cryostat that contains superconductor modules. The $LN_2$ also plays the role of a high voltage insulator between the modules and the cryostat, so the pressure was maintained at 5 bars for high insulation performance. After installation in a test site, the cooling characteristics of the system were tested. In this operation test, some important data were measured such as temperature distribution in $LN_2$, pressure change, performance of the heat exchanger, and cooling capacity of the total system. Consequently, the results indicate that the cooling system operates well as designed.

  • A 1 MV A single phase high temperature superconducting (HTS) transformer was manufactured and tested. The rated voltages of primary and secondary of the HTS transformer are 22.9 kV and 6.6 kV respectively. BSCCO-2223 HTS tape was used for HTS windings of 1 MV A HTS transformer. In order to reduce AC loss generated in the HTS winding, the type of concentric arrangement winding was adopted to a 1 MV A HTS transformer. Single HTS tape for primary windings and 4 parallel HTS tapes for secondary windings were used considering the each rated current of the HTS transformer. A core of HTS transformer was fabricated as a shell type core made of laminated silicon steel plate. And a GFRP cryostat with a room temperature bore was also manufactured. The characteristic tests of 1 MV A HTS transformer were performed such as no load test, short circuit test and several insulation tests at 65 K using sub-cooled liquid nitrogen. From the results of tests, the validity of design of HTS transformer was ascertained.

  • The operational cost for maintaining the superconductivity of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) cables needs to be reduced for feasible operation. It depends on factors such as AC loss and heat transfer from the outside. Effective operation requires design optimization and suitable operational conditions. Generally, it is known that critical currents increase and AC losses decrease as the operational temperature of liquid nitrogen ($LN_2$) is lowered. However, the cryo-cooler consumes more power to lower the temperature. To determine the effective operational temperature of the HTS cable while considering the critical current and AC loss, critical currents of the HTS cable conductor were measured under various temperature conditions using sub-cooled $LN_2$ by Stirling cryo-cooler. Next, AC losses were measured under the same conditions and their variations were analyzed. We used the results to select suitable operating conditions while considering the cryo-cooler's power consumption. We then recommended the effective operating temperature for the HTS cable system installed in an actual power grid in KEPCO's 154/22.9 kV transformer substation.

  • As power demands increase, development of the superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) is being watched with interest. Many types of SFCLs using various superconducting materials have been developed. Especially, the FCL using coated conductor (CC) has been investigated actively at present. CCs have many advantages for the FCL application. YBCO materials used in CCs have a high n-value, and it is relatively easy to choose a matrix of the CC for high resistivity. If the CC has high resistivity, high voltage can be applied to the CC. Then total length of the CC used in SFCL, which has effects on total price and volume of the SFCL, can be reduced. Short circuit tests of two different types of CCs in the liquid nitrogen bath and its sub-cooled condition were performed and analyzed. An effect of high resistivity of the CC and cooling methods on fault current limiting characteristics could be verified in this paper.
