This study was done to analyze the contents of food and nutrition information in daily newspapers. Articles in four newspapers(Chosun, Donga, Hankook, Joongang Ilbo) published during November 2003 to April 2004 were monitored. In analysis, 216 articles were used. Classifying the articles by topics, cuisine/cooking $(19.4\%)$ and food/ nutrition related to diseases $(18.1\%)$ were most common. Articles regarding food sanitation or safety, obesity and diet accounted for $12.5\%$, respectively. Other topics in articles included food culture$(11.1\%)$, balanced meals/eating habits $(10.6\%)$ and functional foods $(7.9\%)$. About $77\%$ of articles were written for unspecified persons. Regarding the types of articles, news articles made up $44\%$ of monitored articles, followed by feature articles $(14.8\%)$, advertisement by articles $(12.9\%)$, serials by professionals $(11.6\%)$, and information of daily life $(8.8\%)$. Nineteen percent of articles did not have specific sources, while $20.8\%$ were based on interviews with professionals. Other sources of articles included research reports $(14.8\%)$, field reports $(12.1\%)$ and literature $(8.8\%)$. Contents analysis showed that four-fifth of articles were evaluated as 'contents and titles are consistent', 'not difficult to understand', 'contents are not exaggerated', and 'information is not overgeneralized'. Seventy-one percent of articles were evaluated positively on increasing awareness regarding food/nutrition, while $56.5\%$ were evaluated as providing practical information. The major problems in articles were 'intentional or indirect advertisements of specific items/companies' ($74.6\%$ of articles applicable), 'lacking in scientific basis/explanation' $(65.3\%)$, 'presenting unbalanced information due to focusing on specific area' $(46.7\%)$, 'unclearness of contents' $(38.4\%)$, and 'lacking in explanation of technical terms' $(35.2\%)$. To provide reliable information, stating the sources of articles clearly and supplementing the articles with scientific basis and balanced information on specific topics are needed. It is also necessary to explain the contents and technical terms clearly and to reduce the contents of intentional, indirect advertisement in nutrition-related articles.
The purpose of this study was to investigate Bone Mineral Density(BMD) and affecting factors on BMD of college women in Seoul. The subjects were 47 healthy college women aged 18-25 years. Antrophometric and body fat measurements were performed by Bioelectrical Impedance Fatness Analyzer(Tanita TVF 202). Blood pressure and pulse frequency were measured. Dietary intakes and general living habits were examined through questionnaires and nutrient intakes were analyzed by Computer Aided Nutritional Analysis(CAN) program for professional. Serum total cholesterol, TG(triglyceride), HDL-cholesterol, total protein, albumin, GOT, calcium were measured by Spotchem(SP-4410). Serum osteocalcin and alkaline phosphatase(ALP) were measured to monitor bone formation. BMD of lumbar spine(L2-L4), right hip(neck, ward's triangle, trochanter) and right forearm were measured by Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry(DEXA). Muscle strength was measured by examining leg flexion strength(right and left), leg extension power(right and left), handgrip power(right and left) and back strength. All data were statistically analyzed by the SAS PC package program. BMD of college women was normal(by WHO, 1994). Their muscle strength was bad(by national fitness guidebook, 1995). Only a mall number of them exercised (32.6% of subjects). There was no significant difference among BMD, muscle strength and % body fat(p<0.05). There were significant differences between BMD and total cholesterol as well as TG and VLDL-cholesterol(p<0.05). Total cholesterol was associated with decreasing BMD of the right forearm(p<0.05). TG and VLDL-cholesterol are associated with increasing BMD of right hip ward's triangle(p<0.05). There were significant differences among BMD, ALP and serum total protein. ALP was associated with decreasing BMD of the right forearm(p<0.05). There were significant differences between BMD and Ca as well as between Na and K intakes (p<0.05). Intakes of Na and K were associated with decreasing BMD of the right forearm (UD)(p<0.05). There were significant differences between in BMD and pulse frequently and serum albumin (p<0.05). Serum albumin is associated with increasing BMD of L3-L4(p<0.05), right hip neck(p<0.05). %Body fat, TG, VLDL-C, Ca intake, pulse frequency and serum albumin were associated with increasing BMD(p<0.05). Intakes of Na and K, ALP, total cholesterol, total cholesterol, total protein and height are associated with decreasing BMD(p<0.05). Overall results indicate that Ca intake but to be moderate in protein and Na intakes in order to increase BMD. Body exercise was recommended to increase BMD as well.

Objectives: Ginseng has a long history of being used in insomnia treatment and there is some evidence from animal studies of its sleep-enhancing property. From this, it can be assumed that ginseng has sleep-promoting effect in humans. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Korean red ginseng on change of sleep architecture in humans. Methods: A total of 20 healthy young males with regular sleep and wake habits and without any psychiatric nor cognitive problems were selected based on review of sleep questionnaires and sleep diaries they completed followed by an interview with a board-certified psychiatrist. The subjects were randomly assigned to red ginseng or placebo for 2 weeks of trial. The total daily dose of ginseng was 4,500 mg. The polysomnographic recordings were made at baseline and at 2 weeks after. The effects of red ginseng and placebo on sleep were assessed by comparing the changes in polysomnographic variables between the two groups. Results: A total of 15 subjects, 8 from red ginseng group and 7 from placebo group, were included to undergo polysomnographic procedures. The red ginseng group showed tendencies to increase stage 3 sleep (p=0.087) and to decrease stage 2 sleep (p=0.071) from the baseline compared with the placebo group. Conclusion: Korean red ginseng tends to increase deep sleep and decrease shallow sleep. Our result is in line, at least in part, with previous findings that Korean red ginseng increased total and NREM sleep in rats. Further studies with higher ginseng dosage, larger sample size and longer trial duration should be conducted to confirm the sleep stabilizing and balancing effects of Korean red ginseng.

The primary cause of missing teeth vary depending on the region. The loss of posterior teeth is mainly due to dental caries, whereas that of the anterior teeth occur primarily due to trauma at the age of standing and walking and secondarily from the rampant dental caries. Particularly, reduction of the arch length in the cases of premature loss of primary teeth may compromise the eruption of succedaneous permanent teeth. This may result in crowding and impaction of the permanent teeth, and asymmetry of arch, thus a careful consideration for space maintenance should be made in such cases. Space maintainer is required in the case of premature loss of primary posterior teeth, because space loss result from the approximate and centrifugal movement of the neighboring teeth. Generally, in the case of primary incisor, space loss occurs when 1) tooth contact is relevant, 2) crowding in primary dentition is present, and 3) a primary incisor is lost before the eruption of primary canine. Contrarily, in the case of primary dentition with interdental space, space loss will not be observed, mostly when a primary incisor is lost after the eruption of primary canine. Thus, using a space maintainer in cases of premature loss of primary incisor has been introduced primarily not for the purpose of space maintaining but for an aesthetic purpose, prevention of parafunctional oral habits such as tongue thrust, and of pronunciation. Additionally, few case studies have been reported of space loss in cases of premature loss of primary incisor. This study is to report cases of the space loss following the premature loss of primary incisors observed in children.
This study was based on the information provided by 1,180 elementary school children (630 boys and 550 girls) of 5th or 6th grade in Changwon and Gimhae of Gyeongnam province. They were asked about perception and preference for rice foods by questionnaires. The purpose of this survey was to find the way of encouraging rice intake and preference which is currently getting lower because of increasing simple westernized eating habits, and to provide basic information needed for inheriting and improving our traditional rice-based dietary culture. The results are summarized as follows. Most of subjects (91.2%) thought that steamed rice is better than bread for own health. The reason why they chose to eat steamed rice was 'because it is good for health' (61.2%), and 'because it is staple food item that we eat everyday' (26.4%). Seventy one percent of girls and 52.7% of boys gave the answer 'because it is good for health' as the reason for eating steamed rice. The reasons for the importance of the rice-based dietary culture were 'because of its superior nutritional value' (40.8%), and 'because it is our traditional eating culture' (28.6%). While significantly more girls (42.9%) answered as 'because of its superior nutritional value', more boys (39.0%) answered as 'because it is our traditional dietary culture'. More boys (59.0%) preferred noodles than girls' (54.7%), and fruits were preferred more by girls than boys as substitution foods for steamed rice showing significant difference (p<0.01). They wanted rice product developed in the forms such as Ssalamyun (29.8%), Ssalmandoo (24.1%), rice noodles (20.6%), and rice bread (15.6%). The preference score on rice products of subjects was one dish meals (4.27) and drinks (4.26), snacks (3.72), convenience foods (3.61), and steamed rice (3.44) in order. Preferred food showing points over 4 were Ssalbap (plain steamed rice) (4.29) in steamed rice type food, Kimchi bokeumbap (4.56), Bokeumbap (4.55), Bibimbop (4.45), Omelet rice (4.44), Kimbap (4.42), Ddukkuk (4.33), Curried rice (4.33), Jajangbap (4.28), and Ddukmandookuk (4.24) in one dish meal type food, Samgak Kimbap (4.26) in convenience type food, Songpyun (4.48), Injulmi (4.18), Teokbokki (4.71), Ddukkochiguyi (4.46), and rice cookies (4.24) in snack type food, and Shikhye (4.61) and Misugaru (4.28) in drink type food. Based on these results, it may be said that elementary school children think the rice-based diet is good for health and this dietary culture should be inherited and developed not only in a traditional aspect but also in a nutritional aspect. Therefore, more studies are needed to develop various forms of rice food products and cooking recipes.
The golden apple snail was introduced to the Korea from Japan as a potential food for people in 1983. It is one of the pests of direct-seeded rice in korea. This study was conducted to investigate rice(Oriza sativa) consumption and the extent of damage by the golden apple snail(Pomacea canaliculata) in direct-sown paddy fields. Food consumption of the golden apple snail was highest at $30^{\circ}C$. When the emergence of the 1st, 3rd, and 5th leave of rice supplied food, the consumption of young(shell height 15mm) and adult golden apple snail(over shell height 30mm) at $30^{\circ}C$ were 19.0/79.8, 11.0/54.5, 5.5/18.5, and 0.0/2.0 individuals, respectively. Young rice seedings(before 5th leaves of rice) are very susceptible to golden apple snail damage because the young, tender leaves and stems favor the snail's feeding habits. The field experiment with four treatments (0, 2, 5 and 10 individuals respectively per 10 $m^2$) was carried out. The most serious yield loss was 16% from the plot with 10 adults released at emergency stage of rice.
This study was conducted to investigate the characteristics of bird community and to suggest a proper way how to manage and protect bird community in Mt. Paldal, Suwon City. The survey was carried out by line transect method from March 1992 to February 1993, and from October 1998 to August 1999. Twenty-seven birds were recorded, and these birds were also classified into 14 species for residents, 8 species fur summer visitors, 4 species for winter visitors and 1 species fur passage migrant in 1992. Twenty-one birds were recorded, and these birds were also belonged to 16 species fur residents, 2 species fur summer visitors, 2 species for winter visitors and 1 species for passage migrant in 1999. In 1992, seasonal change of number of species and individuals showed a typical pattern of temperate deciduous forests, however, seasonal pattern in 1999 was somewhat differed from that of temperate deciduous forest. According to data of migration habits of bird community in same months, percentage of residents were higher in 1999 and that of summer visitors were higher in 1992. In guild analysis of breeding bird community, bush-nesting and foraging guild that utilize the bush layer as nest and food resources showed the decreasing number of species and individuals, also summer visitors did the same decreasing trends from 1983. Therefore, it should be suggest that protection of bush layer for inhabitation of bush-nesting and foraging guild and summer visitors, and it will be considered that construction of green net-work among urban forests such as Mt. Kwanggyo, Mt. Chilbo, Mt. Paldal, Mt. Sukgi and Mt Yeogi in Suwon City.

The questionnaire survey using the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale(CES-D) was conducted to determine the prevalence of depression and related factors in the rural elderly. The subjects were 922 individuals of 60 years of age and over, living in Chonnam province. The results of this study were as follows. The prevalence rates of depression were 14.6% in male and 24.4%, in female. As the age increased, the prevalence rate increased and the rate was higher in non-educational and widowhood group. The prevalence rate was lower in the group of having good health habits and having a good health status. In the regression analysis, significant predictors of the depression were sex, education, physical activity, perceived health status and body image. In conclusion, main, characteristics which had close relationship to depression in the rural elderly were physical function and self-rated health status.
Purpose: This study was done to investigate the prevalence and related factors of Clonorchis Sinensis for inhabitants of the Han riverside area and to identify knowledge related to Clonorchis Sinensis and intended behavioral changes to decrease risk of infection. Method: The data were collected from December 16, 2008 to January 10, 2009. Participants were 555 people who responded to a questionnaire. Frequency, percentage, $X^2$-test, and t-test were used to analyze the data. Results: The prevalence of Clonorchis Sinensis was 7.9% in this population. Related factors for Clonorchis Sinensis were gender (male=10.8%, female=3.6%, p=0.002) and smoking (p=0.007). but habits related to ingestion of alcohol and raw fish were not significant. As for knowledge of Clonorchis Sinensis, the Clonorchiasis group had a mean score of 10.09 $({\pm}3.95)$ of a possible 17 compared to a score of only 8.27$({\pm}4.60)$ for the negative group (p=0.011). The intended behavioral change related to risk of infection, according to presence of infection or not, was significant (p=0.004). Conclusion: These results suggest that Clonorchiasis is still highly endemic in all risk areas such as the Han riverside, indicating that it is necessary to set up effective management programs for patient care and prevention of Clonorchis Sinensis.

Skin properties are influenced by a variety of internal or external factors. This study was conducted to investigate and compare the skin characteristics in Asian women. We evaluated values of skin physical parameters, and then assessed the correlations among the parameters, and regional differences in 1,500 Asian subjects in seven countries (Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, India, China, and South Korea). The values of transepidermal water loss (TEWL), pH, skin hydration, sebum content, skin sensitivity, elasticity, crow's feet wrinkles, and skin brightness were measured. New Delhi's women were observed to have a lower level of hydration in stratum corneum, sebum content, stinging scores, and darker skin color than others. Furthermore, their skin surface pH on all sites is the highest among seven countries. Vietnamese had the lowest pH values in skin surface. Korean and Chinese had generally higher elasticity and fewer wrinkles. Both the skin hydration and TEWL had positive correlations with the stinging test, and there was a negative correlation between wrinkles and stinging test. These results represent that there was no clear trend related to the area or region. Skin physical parameters should be studied along with understanding of regional differences and various factors (skin care habits, lifestyle and personal sensitivity).
