This study investigated a 7-week summer science research apprenticeship program for gifted high school students in U.S. The purpose of the study was to examine the reasons why the high school student participated in the program, the students' perceptions on the benefits of the apprenticeship program, and to investigate mentors' perceptions on assessment and mentorship of the students' projects. For this study, laboratory works and group meetings were observed, students' journal and research products were analyzed, and interviews were administrated with student apprentices and some mentors. The result revealed that the main reasons of students' participation were to perform research with university professionals, to understand the scientific research, and to explore their college/career decisions. Students' participation was strongly associated with their internal motivation and interests. The students perceived the benefits of the apprenticeship program as providing them with the experience of the nature of real scientific research, of learning of scientific knowledge on the focus area, and wiser college/career decisions. Students' projects were assessed and guided through on-going interactions and cognitive apprenticeship between mentors and student apprentices.
The purpose of this study was to compare science teachers' perceptions with students' perceptions about the important aims of laboratory activities in science instructions, to identify whether there was a difference between them. For the purpose, the two questionnaires were designed; for secondary science teacher and secondary student. The samples selected in each group were 108 middle school teachers, 109 middle school students, 104 high school teachers, and 110 high school students. The survey responses from each group were analyzed through multiple response method. The results indicated that science teachers selected the science process skills as important aim of laboratory activity whereas students selected the ability for creative problem-solving and the central tendency of teachers' responses about certain item-science process skill was relatively higher than students' responses about certain item-the ability for creative problem-solving. From these results, we found there was the difference between teachers' perception and students perception about the important aims of laboratory activities in science instructions.

This study investigated the effect of subject classroom system by examining students' perceptions of science discretion class, which was newly developed as Science Mathematics specialized subject classroom system. Science discretion subject proceeded through inquiry experiments in the subject classroom, applying both block scheduling and divided classes. Surveys were conducted twice in order to find out what the students thought about science discretion subject and subject classroom class. The results have shown that students considered that the teachers have prepared with enhanced enthusiasm and the classes have become more interesting. The satisfaction level for experiment centered subject was very high (84%) and significantly higher in case of science-oriented course students (p<.05) and upper level students (p<.01). In addition, most of the students thought favorably about block scheduling and divided classes.
The purpose of this study was to explore high school teacher's and students' perceptions of learning difficulties of the ‘chemical bond' unit of the Chemistry II in the 7th national curriculum. The participants in this study were consisted of a teacher and his students(85) from the Chemistry II classrooms: they all answered to the questionnaire, and then some students and the teacher were interviewed individually. The results showed that there were big differences between the teacher's and his students' perceptions of 1) the most difficult unit for understanding; 2) concepts they learned; and 3) the most difficult concept for understanding in the classroom. Students thought that electro-negativity unit was the most difficult to understand while teacher thought molecular structure unit was the hardest unit to teach. And teacher taught all 32 subjects of chemical bond unit to students, but some students could not remember they learned all of them. Most difficult parts for students to understand were ‘Coulomb force' and ‘dipole moment', while the most difficult part for the teacher to teach was ‘the conceptual difference between atomic bond and intermolecular force'. The reasons caused the students' learning difficulties were analyzed and discussed based on the interview data, and then further study was presented.
The purpose of this study was to examined the effects of different grouping according to the levels of students' achievement in science cooperative learning on students' science academic achievements, science-related attitudes, perceptions of science learning environment and self-efficacies. The results of this study can be summarized as following. First, the homogeneous grouping was more effective than the heterogeneous grouping in improving the science academic achievements of high academic ability students. Second, the homogeneous grouping was more effective than the heterogeneous grouping in improving the science-related attitude of students, especially for low academic ability students. Third, both the homogeneous grouping and the heterogeneous grouping improved the perceptions of science learning environment of students. For low academic ability students, the homogeneous grouping was more effective. Fourth, the homogeneous grouping was more effective than the heterogeneous grouping in improving self-efficacies of students, especially for middle and low academic ability students.

This study aimed to identify secondary school students' perceptions of school spaces by researching their place preferences and the reasons for them. For the purpose, we analyzed students' written statements regarding places they like and dislike at school, which were collected from 836 middle and 1,100 high school students enrolled at 4 middle and 4 high schools, respectively. Data were transcribed, encoded, and analyzed so as to be clustered to themes revealing the students' senses of places at school. The results are as follows: (1) for middle school students, the most preferred places had to do with physical activities, including playground, auditorium, gymnasium etc., whereas high school students preferred indoor places such as classrooms; (2) the reasons for like-places were categorized into three themes: functions (physical, social, learning, and everyday activities), emotions (belonging, healing, and aesthetics), and physical characteristics; (3) both middle and high school students regarded restroom as the place that they disliked most; (4) the reasons for dislike-places included physical conditions, atmosphere, person-related, subject-related, and circumstances such as the happening of violence or punishment. These may provide educators, parents, school architects and administrators with practical considerations needed for making school a better place for students at secondary schools.
This study was undertaken to compare meal skipping, snacking, and weight perceptions between students on-campus living alone and off-campus living with parents, in an urban college in the United States. The self-report survey was completed by 219 college students (on-campus=100, off-campus=119) between April and May 2012. Two-thirds (67%) of the respondents skipped at least one meal in the past week, and most participants showed strong desires to lose weight despite their normal/under-weight status. Significant differences between the two groups were obtained for the reason to skip a meal and the type of snack consumed. Compared to on-campus students, significantly higher values were obtained for off-campus students for choosing 'no time to prepare' as a meal skipping reason for lunch and dinner, and 'sweets' as a preferred snack. In addition to the group comparison, multiple regression results indicate that the body mass index (BMI) positively correlates with meal skipping and snacking frequencies. Younger students and female students were determined to have a higher frequency of meal skipping and morning snacking. Future research is required to study the dietary factors associated with living arrangements, to help college students develop healthy eating habits.
This study aims to determine the implications of the efficient and effective implementation of science core competency (ScC) education by examining the state of science core competencies derived from the 2015 revised elementary school science curriculum and analyzing teachers' and students' perceptions. To this end, this paper investigated the reality of reflecting the science core competencies of science textbooks in a group of third and fourth graders from seven elementary schools who passed the test. In addition, in-depth interviews were conducted with four elementary school teachers who participated in qualification textbook selection, and 156 elementary school students were surveyed to determine their perceptions of science core competencies. Findings showed that, first, 1,586 science core competencies were reflected throughout the textbooks, with an average of 227 per textbook and biology being the most salient area. Second, teachers did not understand the difference between previous inquiry activities in textbooks and ScC education. Third, no statistically significant differences were observed in the perceptions of male and female students on science core competencies, the highest average of perceptions being those of scientific thinking ability. From these results, this study concluded that for ScC education to be realized as a curriculum, textbooks must be organized according to the purpose of core competency education, implementing practical changes, and efforts must be directed toward changing the perceptions of individuals who deliver education.

In order to study the effect of the 'General Science' course implemented under the 6th science curriculum, high school students' views about the relationship between science/technology and society and their perceptions of science classroom environment were investigated. Four classes (n = 211) were selected from those completed the 'Science I' course under the 5th science curriculum, and 4 another classes (n = 216) which took the 'General Science' course under the 6th science curriculum were selected. In order to compare students' views about the relationship between science /technology and society. 10 items were selected from the VOSTS (Views On Science-Technology-Society) while considering the 6th science curriculum and the 'General Science' textbooks, and administered at the end of the 'Science I' course and at the beginning and end of the 'General Science' course. In order to compare the perceptions of science classroom environment, the Perceptions of Science Classroom Environment Questionnaire, which was prepared from the Individualized Classroom Environment Questionnaire. the Science Laboratory Environment Inventory, and the Classroom Environment Scale. was also administered at the end of the 'Science I' course and the 'General Science' course. The results indicated that the mean VOSTS score of the 6th-curriculum group was lower than that of the 5th-curriculum group, although the difference was not statistically significant. The decrease in the VOSTS score of the 6th-curriculum group during the 'General Science' course was statistically significant. It was also found that unrealistic views such as 'technology is the application of science', and 'corporations should control science/technology' had been formed during the course. However, the 6th-curriculum group had more positive perceptions of science classroom environment. Educational implications are discussed.
