Studies on the Degree of Likings for Each Units of School Mathematics (학교수학의 각 영영에 대한 선호도 연구)

  • School mathematics are composed of five major units of numbers& algebraic expressions, equations & inequalities, functions, figures, and statistics & probabilities. But if we look into the general activities of mathematics teachers in their class, they rather do not take into account students\` cognitive and affective traits or degree of difficulty which each of the unit has. For successful teaching of mathematics, teachers should take into consideration many affective items which influence the students\` scholastic achievement. Among them student\`s liking for the mathematics is commonly accepted as the most important factor for successful learning. In this study, with the five units of school mathematics, we investigated the students\` degree of likings for each unit. To fined out whether there are any differences in students\` likings for the mathematics, between regions and kind of schools, we classified the population according to the locations and kinds of schools. To do this, we divided the whole region into four parts such as Seoul, large city, medium city and town. Moreover, we partitioned the whole secondary school students into four groups of middle school students, vocational high school students, pro-science students of academic high schools, and pro-liberal arts students of academic high schools. From each partition, we sampled similar size of experimental groups which came up to total 1260 students. Analysing the answer sheets which the students responded about the questionnaire, we investigated the following questions using the ANOVA test. 1. Is there any differences in the trend of likings for each unit between the regional classifications? 2. Is there any differences in the trend of likings for each unit between the classifications of secondary schools? 3. What trends of changes are there in the degree of likings for each unit according to the rising of students\` grade?

  • In this paper I present the teaching strategies and methods of programming education based on the learning style which teachers can apply it to their class on condition that learning style can classify their students' preferences about learning strategies and methods. Recent related researches that prove the differences about student's specific abilities based on their learning styles could never help teachers design and do their teaching of programming in the class. Therefore this study about teaching strategies and methods of programming education will be necessarily. I propose the teaching strategies and methods of programming education based on the learning styles as a results of questionnaire to some professors of computer science education in university. Then, I design and do programming education in the experimental class in order to verify the availability of the proposed teaching strategies and methods. After teaching in class, I evaluate the statistical results of students' achievement test of programming. This study has some restrictions about small number of class and periods of teaching programming, but it will be a good case study about teaching strategies and methods of programming education based on the learning style.

Association between Stress and Nutritional status of High School Students in Chungbuk using Nutrition Quotient for Korean Adolescents (충북지역 일부 고등학생의 스트레스 상태와 청소년 영양지수를 이용한 영양상태와의 관련성)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between stress levels and eating habits in adolescents. Methods: A total of 453 male and female high school students were surveyed to ascertain their stress levels, Nutrition Quotients for Korean Adolescents (NQ-A), and stress-related eating behavior. Results: The average age of the subjects was 18 and they were mostly from nuclear families. Their average daily conversation time with their parents was between 10 to 30 minutes. The average sleep time for female students was observed to be less than that of male students. The satisfaction level of academic achievement of female students was significantly lower than that of the male students (P < 0.001). The average stress level score for female students was 2.7 out of 5, which was significantly higher than the male student's score of 2.4 (P < 0.001). The eating speed of male students was related to stress levels. Both male and female students ate more and craved spicy food when under stress. All male and female students had significantly ascending NQ-A scores rising in the order of stress from 'low level' to 'medium level', to 'high level' (P < 0.001). There was a significant negative correlation between the stress score and the NQ-A score adjusted for general characteristics (r = -0.29, P < 0.001). Conclusions: Since stress and NQ-A were negatively correlated in high school students, higher stress levels can be associated with irregular eating habits and negative eating behavior. Therefore, stress management and nutrition education focusing on stress status are needed for adolescents.

Development of Modules in Earth Science for the Enhancement of Scientific Inquiry Skills (중학생의 탐구 능력 향상을 위한 지구과학 모듈의 개발)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop teaching modules related to Earth Science courses in order to enhance scientific inquiry skills of middle school students. A 'process skill-centered' module was developed to induce scientific process skills, while students explore specific scientific context. A module consists of several activities, and each activity focuses on a specific science process skill. Modules were designed such that the skills would improve depending on the completion of the module. To evaluate the effectiveness, field workshops for middle school science teachers were done twice. Science teachers, who were participants of the workshop, commented that the activities in each module were suited to enhance students' interest in science. They noted that scientific inquiry skills would be developed from each activity. Students responded that the activities in the modules were interesting, and it was a good experience to do them by themselves. Students were the focal point in class, not teachers. This enabled teachers to evaluated each student's achievement level, and provide a proper feedback. Hence, applying these modules in classes should enhance the students' scientific inquiry skills.

Effects of Physical Living Environment on the Social Interaction and Perceived Sense of Community among Students in University Dormitory (대학기숙사 물리적 주거공간환경이 기숙사 거주학생들간 인지된 공동체의식 및 사회적 교류에 미치는 영향 연구)

  • College students living in university dormitory continuously experience unique physical and social living conditions, being away from their hometown and loving families. Most college students has engaged in a very limited social activities in dormitory area. Studies have shown that sense of community(SOC) is closely related to students' social activities. However, few research have examined the relationship between physical environment and sense of community. Therefore, this research aims to evaluate the effects of physical environment of dormitory on students' perceived sense of community and their social interaction. Extensive literature review found that developing social interaction and building a sense of student community improve students' overall residential satisfaction with dormitory and personal academic growth. Survey on A university dormitory and Chi square analysis (${\chi}^2$) indicated that each group's individual characteristics such as gender, grade, living period, and personality were statistically significant on the level of SOC at the level of p=.01. Individual analysis of SOC showed that sense of belonging was higher than shared emotional connection, which means certain level of intervention is needed. Pearson correlation analysis validated that there exists statistically significant relationship between physical environment and SOC. Further it also found that the most important predictor in facilitating social interaction were comfortable, quiet, and enough social space around the dormitory.

The Development of 'Korea's Science Education Indicators' (한국의 과학교육 종합 지표 개발 연구)

  • The importance of science education for cultivating the competencies required by an intelligent information society is gradually being strengthened. The government's roles and responsibilities for science education are stipulated by laws and policies in Korea. In order to systematically support science education, continuous monitoring of related policies is essential. This study aims to develop indicators that can be used to systematically and continuously monitor the national policies on science education in Korea. To achieve this goal, we first derive the framework for the indicators that has two dimensions (learner and science education context) and three categories (input, process, and outcome) from literature reviews. In order to derive the components and subcomponents of the indicators, the contents of science education-related indicators developed in Korea or abroad were reviewed. In order to verify the suitability and validity of the framework and components of the initial indicators, a two-round Delphi method was conducted with 25 expert participants with five different professions in science education. Finally, three components of the 'input' category (student characteristics, teacher characteristics, and educational infrastructure), three components of the 'process' category (science curriculum implementation, science educational contents and programs implementation, and teacher professional development program implementation), and five components of the 'outcome' category (science competency, participation and action, affective achievement, cognitive achievement, and satisfaction) were derived. An instrument to collect data from students, teachers, and institutions was developed based on the components and subcomponents, and content validity and internal consistency of the instrument were analyzed. Korea's Science Education Indicators developed in this study can comprehensively measure the current status of science education and is expected to contribute to a more efficient and effective science education policy planning and implementation.

A Study on RN Students′ Education Satisfaction Toward RN-to-BSN Programs (간호학사 편입학과정(RN-BSN)생들의 특성 및 교육만족도 조사)

  • This study was undertaken to investigate the general characteristics of students, which include the degree of satisfaction, motives of admission, the recognition of advantages and disadvantages, opinion of students on self-directed learning, and planning and anticipatory effects after graduation. Data was collected through a questionnaire survey over a period of four months, from May 1997 to August 1997. The subjects used for this study consisted of 322 RN students sampled from six RN-to-BSN programs in Korea using the census sampling method. Statistical methods employed for this study included discriptive statistics, M ANOVA, and F-test. The results of the study are as follows 1. The RN students' motives of admission to RN-to-BSN programs were ‘for personal advancement’, ‘to earn a BSN degree’, and ‘for professional development’ in this order. 2. The RN students' responses to the advantages of RN-to-BSN programs were ‘acquisition of new knowledge and a BSN degree’ and ‘to gain professional thinking and a broader view’, while as the disadvantages of RN-to-BSN programs were ‘geographical isolation of institutions’, ‘limitation of information’, and ‘underdeveloped school environments’ in this order. 3. The survey based on opinions toward self-directed learning showed that there was a need of detailed guidelines for self-directed learning. Most agreed that it was a very effective learning method for a RN student, and the self-directed learning method Increases motives for learning. 4. The students' anticipatory effect after graduation were ‘self-achievement’, ‘development of professional skills’, and ‘admission to post-graduate school or programs to study abroad’. 5. The students were very satisfied with the quality of faculty members, and satisfied with the quality of lectures and teaching. However, students were unsatisfied with rented lecture rooms, and very unsatisfied with self-directed learning methods. 6. School nurses showed higher statistical significances in the need for teaching material and anticipatory effect after graduation than other RN students working in hospitals and public health agencies. Also, school nurses, public health nurses, and industry nurses showed higher statistical significances in motives of admission than RN students working in hospitals. Further more, staff nurses, school nurses, and industry nurses showed higher levels of satisfaction toward a RN-to-BSN programs than nurses in higher positions, such as administrators or directors of nursing. 7 City residents were more satisfied with RN-to-BSN programs than rural residents. Otherwise, the rural residents had higher motives for admission, a bigger need for teaching materials, and recognition of the disadvantages of RN-to-BSN programs than city residents. Finally, RN students who earned below a monthly income of ₩1,000,000 showed higher motivation for admission than those who earned more than ₩1,000,000.

An Experiment,11 Study on Implementation of Problem-Oriented Nursing Record (문제제시 간호기록 방법이 간호기록 행위에 미치는 효과에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • Primary function of health record is that as tool of communication between the health processionals with the mutual goal, the promotion of health care standard. Studies have been carried out world over oil tile subject, among those, Weed's Problem-Oriented Health Record is considered a paramount achievement. This study was designed to assess tile possibility of implementing tile problem-oriented health record system through ail experiment in order to provide data for nurse administrators infiltrating reformation of recording system and format. Record of 29 patients admitted at Korea University Hospital, Seoul, from March through June, 1976 for 4 to 14 days were sampled. Nursing notes were recorded by research assistants; senior nursing student trailed extensively by the researcher oil Problem-Oriented Records, oil Problem Oriented Nursing Record format (experimental group) and analysis were carried out comparative, with that of traditional nursing records noted by other nursing personnel (control group) on the same patient. Attitude towards Problem Oriented Nursing Record system and format were attained through questionaries responded by the 51 research assistants. Results are as fellows: Comparative analysis revealed that: 1. Assessment of patients' health problems recorded significantly more in traditional records. 2. Focus of health Problem differed; traditional records slowed significantly higher frequency in medical and procedure as focus while problem oriented records on nursing focus problems. 3. Problem- Oriented records were better organized, Mean value scores of attitude towards Problem- Oriented Records revealed that: Positive value scores on all 4 categories: 1) Assessment of nursing needs, 2) Nursing care planning 3) Patient progress assessment and 4) Tool of teaching and learning revealed that the Problem-Oriented Nursing Record is positively accepted by tile respondents. Recommendation Further experiments on implementation of Problem- Oriented Health Record are recommended: experiment involving all health professionals, in larger scope and longitudinal.

  • The general learning method aims at conveying knowledge by conveying the contents of the learning set to numerous of learners. However, such a method is difficult to induce the interest of the learner, and the unilateral delivery method has a disadvantage in that the concentration of the learner can be lowered and the overall academic achievement can be lowered. In order to solve this problem, the gay learning method which induces the interest of the students themselves is studied, and the gay learning game which combines the education and the game can influence the learning by inducing the interest of the student. In this paper, we propose a method to prevent the forgery and falsification of the blockchain, which has been widely discussed by the 4th Industrial Revolution, as a card game, And suggests ways to contribute to the development of the process.

The Effects of Question-Creation Training on Metacognition, Self-efficacy and Question Levels (문제생성훈련 수업이 중학생의 메타인지와 자기효능감 및 문제 수준에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the instruction with question-creation training, compared with traditional science instructions. The instruction with question-creation training is to give students chances to make questions by themselves based on what they learned before the end of the classes. The four effects of the instruction were studied: students' achievement, metacognition, self-efficacy, and the level of the questions created by the students according to different proficiency levels. Research data was gathered from 65 second grade students at a middle school in Busan. The comparative group was instructed in traditional lecture-type teaching method. The experimental group was instructed with questioncreation training. Students in the experimental group were asked to make 3 questions by themselves and then, to solve their peers' questions about 15 minutes before the end of the classes. Both groups were divided into 3 groups by proficiency level according to the results of last semester's science test. Before the research, a metacognition test and a self-efficacy test were conducted. After the research, an achievement test, a question level test, a metacognition test, and a self-efficacy test were conducted and analyzed by t-test. The research data for question level was analyzed by one-way ANCOVA. The results of this study revealed that question-creation training has a positive effect on student's achievement, metacognition, and self-efficiency. It also showed most of the students have gained an ability to make higher-level questions regardless of their proficiency level due to the increased number of students who made higher-level questions. It also showed that most of the students could gain an ability to make higher-level questions regardless of their proficiency level from the fact that the number of students who made higher-level questions increased in every proficiency level.
