In this paper, a structural design method of a smart tuned mass damper (TMD) for a retractable-roof spatial structure under earthquake excitation was proposed. For this purpose, a retractable-roof spatial structure was simplified to a single degree of freedom (SDOF) model. Dynamic characteristics of a retractable-roof spatial structure is changed based on opened or closed roof condition. This condition was considered in the numerical simulation. A magnetorheological (MR) damper was used to compose a smart TMD and a displacement based ground-hook control algorithm was used to control the smart TMD. The control effectiveness of a smart TMD under harmonic and earthquake excitation were evaluated in comparison with a conventional passive TMD. The vibration control robustness of a smart TMD and a passive TMD were compared along with the variation of natural period of a simplified structure. Dynamic responses of a smart TMD and passive TMD under resonant harmonic excitation and earthquake load were compared by varying mass ratio of TMD to total mass of the simplified structure. The design procedure proposed in this study is expected to be used for preliminary design of a smart TMD for a retractable-roof spatial structure.
The purpose of this study is to demonstrate and verify the application of phase-control absolute-acceleration-feedback active tuned mass dampers (PCA-ATMD) to multiple-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) building structures. In addition, servo speed control technique has been developed as a replacement for force control in order to mitigate the negative effects caused by friction and inertia. The essence of the proposed PCA-ATMD is to achieve a 90° phase lag for a structure by implementing the desired control force so that the PCA-ATMD can receive the maximum power flow with which to effectively mitigate the structural vibration. An MDOF building structure with a PCA-ATMD and a real-time filter forming a complete system is modeled using a state-space representation and is presented in detail. The feedback measurement for the phase control algorithm of the MDOF structure is compact, with only the absolute acceleration of one structural floor and ATMD's velocity relative to the structure required. A discrete-time direct output-feedback optimization method is introduced to the PCA-ATMD to ensure that the control system is optimized and stable. Numerical simulation and shaking table experiments are conducted on a three-story steel shear building structure to verify the performance of the PCA-ATMD. The results indicate that the absolute acceleration of the structure is well suppressed whether considering peak or root-mean-square responses. The experiment also demonstrates that the control of the PCA-ATMD can be decentralized, so that it is convenient to apply and maintain to real high-rise building structures.
A hybrid control system is presented for seismic-resistant building structures with and without soil-structure interaction (SSI). The hybrid control is a damper-actuator-bracing control system composed of passive and active controllers. An intelligent algorithm is developed for the hybrid system, in which the passive damper is designed for minor and moderate earthquakes and the active control is designed to activate when the structural response is greater than a given threshold quantity. Thus, the external energy for active controller can be optimally utilized. In the control of a multistory building, the controller placement is determined by evaluating the optimal location index (OLI) calculated from six earthquake sources. In the study, the soil-structure interaction is considered both in frequency domain and time domain analyses. It is found that the interaction can significantly affect the control effectiveness. In the hybrid control algorithm with intelligent strategy, the working stages of passive and active controllers can be different for a building with and without considering SSI. Thus SSI is essential to be included in predicting the response history of a controlled structure.
The variable structure controller is designed such that in sliding mode, the system moves along the switching plane in the vicinity of the switching plane, thus it is robust because it is not affected by the parameter fluctuations of the plant. However, a controller based on a variable structure may not meet the desired performance when it is commanded to track any input or is exposed to disturbances. This study proposes a sliding mode controller that follows the IVSC (Integral Variable Structure Control) approach with ELO (Extended Luenberger observer) to solve this problem. The proposed sliding mode control is applied to the velocity control of the hydraulic motor. The sliding plane was determined by the pole placement, and the control input was designed to ensure the existence of the sliding mode. The feasibility of modeling and controller are reviewed by comparing with conventional proportional-integral control through computer simulation using MATLAB software and experimenting on the cases of significant plant parameter fluctuations and disturbances.

Spatial structures as like dome structure have the different dynamic characteristics from general rahmen structures. Therefore, it is necessary to accurately analyze dynamic characteristics and effectively control of seismic response of spatial structure subjected to multi-supported excitation. In this study, star dome structure that is subjected to multi-supported excitation was used as an example spatial structure. The response of the star dome structure under multiple support excitation are analyzed by means of the pseudo excitation method. Pseudo excitation method shows that the structural response is divided into two parts, ground displacement and structural dynamic response due to ground motion excitation. And the application of passive tuned mass damper(TMD) to seismic response control of star dome structures has been investigated. From this numerical analysis, it is shown that the seismic response of spatial structure under multiple support seismic excitation are different from those of spatial structure under unique excitation. And it is reasonable to install TMD to the dominant points of each mode. And it is found that the passive TMD could effectively reduce the seismic responses of dome structure subjected to multi-supported excitation.

In this paper, a novel neural network compensation technique for PD like fuzzy controlled robot manipulators is presented. A standard PD-like fuzzy controller is designed and used as a main controller for controlling robot manipulators. A neural network controller is added to the reference trajectories to modify input error space so that the system is robust to any change in system parameter variations. It forms a neural-fuzzy control structure and used to compensate for nonlinear effects. The ultimate goal is same as that of the neuro-fuzzy control structure, but this proposed technique modifies the input error not the fuzzy rules. The proposed scheme is tested to control the position of the 3 degrees-of-freedom rotary robot manipulator. Performances are compared with that of other neural network control structure known as the feedback error learning structure that compensates at the control input level.
Distributed piezoeletric sensor and actuator have been designed for efficient vibration control of a cantilevered beam. Both PZT and PVDF have been used in this study, the former as an actuator and the latter as a sensor for the integrated structure. We have optimized the position and the size of the PZT actuator and the electrode shape of the PVDF sensor. Finite element method is used to model the structure and the optimized actuators, we have designed the active electrode width of the PVDF sensor along the span of the beam. Actuator design is based on the criterion of minimizing the system energy in the control modes under a given initial condition. Model control forces for the residual (uncontrolled) modes have been minimized during the sensor design to minimize the observation spill-over. Genetic algorithm and sequential quadratic programming technique have been utilized as an optimization scheme. Discrete LQG control law has been applied to the integrated structure for real time vibration control. Performance of the sensor, the actuator, and the integrated smart structure has been demonstrated by experiments.
This paper introduces basic study how to restrain the vibration of a four story shear structure. We have modeled a four story shear structure mathematically and have identified each parameters by experiment. We have gotten a reduced nominal model through modal analyzing method and the $H_{\infty}$ control theory is used in the control system design to get the robust controller. It's shown that the desirable performances is confirmed through the mathematical simulation. And a designed controller applying the $H_{\infty}$ control theory shows the good performance for the impulse disturbance through the simulation results. That is, the robustness of this control system is confirmed for the ability of disturbance rejection and modeling error.
In this paper, we design a vibration control system that includes a 3-D.O.F. mass-spring-damper structure for the analytical model of a building that is excited at the base of this structure by an external dynamic force, and one Active Mass Damper(AMD) on the top of this structure to generate control forces fro attenuation of the structural response. Two robust controllers based on $\mu$-synthesis and H$\infty$ optimal control are designed for the structural system to show that the performance of a control system can be degraded by some parameter uncertainties such as mass, stiffness coefficients, and/or damping coefficients. The performance of the two controllers are compared in terms of nominal performance, robust stability and robust performance by simulations.

This paper is concerned with the vibration control of multi-layer structure for ultra-tall buildings and main tower of large bridge etc. We have modeled the multi-layer structure with the distributed mass system as the lumped mass system of two-degree-of-freedom structure and made experimental equipment. The H$_{\infty}$ control theory is applied to the design of the control system. The designed control system is simulated by computer. As a result, the designed H$_{\infty}$ controller showed good vibration control performance to impact excitation and the good frequency response.e.
