Reflecting the growing importance of nanomaterials in science and technology, controlling the porosity combined with well-defined structural properties has been an ever-demanding pursuit in the related fields of frontier researches. A number of reports have focused on the synthesis of various nanoporous materials so far and, recently, the nanomaterials with multimodal porosity are getting an emerging importance due to their improved material properties compared with the mono porous materials. However, most of those materials are obtained in bulk phases while the spherical nanoparticles are one of the most practical platforms in a great number of applications. Here, we report on the synthesis of the core-shell silica nanoparticles with double mesoporous shells (DMSs). The DMS nsnoparticles are spherical and monodispersive and have two different mesoporous shells, i.e., the bimodal porosity. It is the first example of the core-shell silica nanoparticles with the different mesopores coexisting in the individual nanoparticles. Furthermore, the carbon and silica hollow capsules were also fabricated via a serial replication process.

Reactive Powder Concrete (RPC) is an ultra high strength and high ductility cement-based composite material and has shown some promise as a new generation concrete in construction field. It is characterized by a silica fume-cement mixture with very low water-binder (w/b) ratio and very dense microstructure, which is formed using various powders such as cement, silica fume and very fine quartz sand (0.15~0.4mm) instead of ordinary coarse aggregate. However, the unit weight of cement in RPC is as high as 900~1,000 kg/㎥ due to the use of very fine sand instead of coarse aggregate, and a large volume of relatively expensive silica fume as a high reactivity pozzolan is also used, which is not produced in Korea and thus must be imported. Since the density of RPC has a heavy weight at 2.5~3.0 g/㎤. In this study, the modified RPC was made by the combination of ternary pozzolanic materials such as blast furnace slag and fly ash, silica fume in order to economically and practically feasible for Korea's situation. The fire resistance and structural behavior of the modified RPC exposed to high temperature were investigated.
The age of electric vehicle is coming. One of the most important problems to be solved for popularization of electric vehicle is fuel economy. To increase fuel economy of electric vehicles, it is necessary to improve the performance of the battery or the car body should be lighter than now. To solve the problem of the car body, change the car body's material to carbon fiber reinforced composites can be an excellent answer. However, the part made from carbon fiber reinforced composites is vulnerable to accidents due to their high brittleness. In this study, ductile silica fume was added into the carbon fiber composites to enhance toughness. To examine this, various amounts and sizes of silica fume were considered and the toughness enhancement was examined by performing tensile tests.

In this study, the setting time and compressive strength of cement paste composites applied with nano-micro pozzolanic binders were experimental analyzed. The pozzolanic binder was reduced initial and final setting time and the compressive strength was increased. Micro silica was effective in decrease the initial setting and final setting time and impressing the compressive strength. When two or more cement binders were used, the using of silica fume and a small amount of nano silica at reduced the setting time to 62-64 % to OPC cement and the compressive strength was increased to 117 %. A small amount of mixing the nano silica was effect to pore filling and pozzolanic activation. However, the addition of a chemical admixture should be considered when mixing table design because pozzolanic binders high specific surface area causes a decrease in cement composites flow.
$MO-SiO_2$ (M = Zn, Sn, In, Ag, Ni) binary silica gels were synthesized by sol-gel method and their structural change with the kind of metal ions was characterized by XRD, FT- IR and $^{29}$Si-NMR. Although X-ray analysis showed partial recrystallization of $AgNO_3$ in $Ag-SiO_2$gel, crystalline phase formed by the bonding between metal ion and the silica matrix didn't appear in all $MO-SiO_2$ gels. The FT-IR analysis showed that Zn, Sn and in partially formed Si-O-M bonding in silica matrix and made an shift of absorption peak to by Si-O-Si symmetrical vibration. In addition, $^{29}Si-NMR$ studies showed that Zn, Sn and In didn't affect sol-gel process of silica and were linked with non-bridging oxygen of the linear silica structure, which formed imperfect network because of low temperature sol-gel process. Ag and Ni make a role of catalysis on sol-gel process, resulting in densifying the silica network structure.

This research is a study on the characteristics of OPC-slag cement using nano-silica solution (NSS) with water-weight substitution method. The new replacement method is a fundamental step to study the behavior of cement with higher NSS replacement rates than previous studies. NSS was replaced by 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50% of the mixing water weight. As a result, the mechanical and microstructural characteristics were improved. This can be summarized in two ways. First, when the NSS is replaced with mixing water, the homogeneous dispersion action of the nano-silica particles is improved. This promotes initial hydration. Second, substitution of NSS with higher density than mixing water reduces w / b. This forms a dense hydration reaction material. The new substitution method did not show any degradation of mechanical and microstructural properties as compared with the results using the powdered nano-silica particles revealed in the previous study. Therefore, it is considered that the method of weight substitution of NSS used in this study can be applied to the formulation of OPC-slag cement.
Assembly of hybrid mesophases through the combination of amphiphilic block copolymers, acting as structuredirecting agents, and silicon sources using low acid catalyst concentration regimes is a versatile strategy to produce large quantities of high-quality ordered large-pore mesoporous silicas in a very reproducible manner. Controlling structural and textural properties is proven to be straightforward at low HCl concentrations with the adjustment of synthesis gel composition and the option of adding co-structure-directing molecules. In this account, we illustrate how various types of large-pore mesoporous silica can easily be prepared in high phase purity with tailored pore dimensions and tailored level of framework interconnectivity. Silica mesophases with two-dimensional hexagonal (p6mm) and three-dimensional cubi (Fm$\overline{3}$m, Im$\overline{3}$m and Ia$\overline{3}$d) symmetries are generated in aqueous solution by employing HCl concentrations in the range of 0.1−0.5 M and polyalkylene oxide-based triblock copolymers such as Pluronic P123 $(EO_{20}-PO_{70}-EO_{20})$ and Pluronic F127 $(EO_{106}-PO_{70}-EO_{106})$. Characterizations by powder X-ray diffraction, nitrogen physisorption, and transmission electron microscopy show that the mesoporous materials all possess high specific surface areas, high pore volumes and readily tunable pore diameters in narrow distribution of sizes ranging from 4 to 12 nm. Furthermore, we discuss our recent advances achieved in order to extend widely the phase domains in which single mesostructures are formed. Emphasis is put on the first synthetic product phase diagrams obtained in $SiO_2$-triblock copolymer-BuOH-$H_2O$ systems, with tuning amounts of butanol and silica source correspondingly. It is expected that the extended phase domains will allow designed synthesis of mesoporous silicas with targeted characteristics, offering vast prospects for future applications.

During the manufacturing of Portland cement, CO2 gas is also necessarily produced through both decarbonation of calcium carbonate and kiln burning. By partially replacing the Portland cement with limestone powder, which is an inert filler in a concrete mixture, CO2 consumption can be reduced in a construction field. This study is to investigate the fundamental durability characteristics of limestone powder added concrete. Experimental variable was the replacement ratio of limestone powder from 0% to 25% with 5% increment. Durability characteristics were investigated by resistance to freeze-thaw, alkali-silica reaction and de-icing chemical in addition to the properties of fresh concrete. From test results, it was observed that the addition of limestone powder did not significantly affect the resistance to freeze-thaw reaction and de-icing chemical. The addition of limestone powder reduced the occurrence potential of alkali-silica reaction by reducing an alkali content in Portland cement.
Amorphous silica nanoparticles are among the most fundamental $SiO_2$ compounds, having implications in diverse geological processes and technological applications. Here, we explore structural details of amorphous silica nanoparticles with varying particle sizes (7 and 14 nm) using $^{29}Si$ and $^{1}H$ MAS NMR spectroscopy together with quantum chemical calculations to have better prospect for their size-dependent atomic structures. $^{29}Si$ MAS NMR spectra at 9.4 T resolve $Q^2,\;Q^3$ and $Q^4$ species at -93 ppm, -101 ppm, -110 ppm, respectively. The fractions of $Q^2,\;Q^3,\;O^4$ species are $7{\pm}1%,\;27{\pm}2%$, and $66{\pm}2%$ for 7 nm amorphous silica nanoparticles and $6{\pm}1%,\;21{\pm}2%$, and $73{\pm}2%$ for 14 nm amorphous silica nanoparticles. Whereas it has been suggested that $Q^2$ and $Q^3$ species exist on particles surfaces, the difference in $Q^{2}\;+\;Q^{3}$ fraction in both 7 and 14 nm particles is not significant, suggesting that $Q^2$ and $Q^3$ species could exist inside particles. $^{1}H$ MAS NMR spectra at 11.7 T shows diverse hydrogen environments, including physisorbed water, hydrogen bonded silanol, and non-hydrogen bonded silanol with varying hydrogen bond strength. The hydrogen contents in the 7nm silica nanoparticles (including water and hydroxyl groups) are about 3 times of that of 14 nm particles. The larger chemical shills for proton environments in the former suggest stronger hydrogen bond strength. The fractions of non-hydrogen bonded silanols in the 14 nm amorphous silica nanoparticles are larger than those in 7 nm amorphous silica nanoparticles. This observation suggests closer proximity among hydrogen atoms in the nanoparticles with smaller diameter. The current results with high-resolution solid-state NMR reveal previously unknown structural details in amorphous silica nanoparticles with particle size.
