  • There are uncertainties about the seismic load caused by seismic waves, which cannot be predicted due to the characteristics of the earthquake occurrence. Therefore, it is necessary to consider these uncertainties by probabilistic analysis. In this paper, procedures to develop a fragility curve that is a representative method to evaluate the safety of a structure by stochastic analysis were proposed for cut slopes. Fragility curve that considers uncertainties of soil shear strength parameters was prepared by Monte Carlo Simulation using pseudo static analysis. The fragility curve considering the uncertainty of the input ground motion was developed by performing time-history seismic analysis using selected 30 real ground input motions and the Newmark type displacement evaluation analysis. Fragility curves are represented as the cumulative probability distribution function with lognormal distribution by using the maximum likelihood estimation method.

  • The slope failure due to the rainfall infiltration occurs frequently in Korea, since the depth of the weathered residual soil layer is shallow in mountainous region. Depth of the failure surface is shallow and tends to pass near the interface between impermeable bedrock and soil layer. Soil parameters that have a significant impact on the instability of unsaturated slopes due to rainfall infiltration inevitably include large uncertainties. Therefore, this study proposes a probabilistic analysis procedure by Monte Carlo Simulation which considers the hydraulic characteristics and strength characteristics of soil as random variables in order to predict slope failure due to rainfall infiltration. The Green-Ampt infiltration model was modified to reflect the boundary conditions on the slope surface according to the rainfall intensity and the boundary condition of the shallow impermeable bedrock was introduced to predict the stability of unsaturated soil slope with shallow bedrock under constant rainfall intensity. The results of infiltration analysis were used as inputs of infinite slope analysis to calculate the safety factor. The proposed analysis method can be used to calculate the time-dependent failure probability of soil slope due to rainfall infiltration.

  • In this paper, we present the performance analysis of a multi-path searcher operating over Rayleigh fading channels when multiple transmit antennas are employed in the down-link of W-CDMA system. The simulation results for the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) for 1, 2, and 4 transmit antennas are presented to corroborate the theoretical analyses. We also propose a procedure to find the optimum parameters of double-dwell serial searcher according to the number of the multiple transmit antennas. Our analyses and simulations indicate that post-detection integration is not necessary when the number of transmit antennas is more than two. Finally, we found that increasing transmit diversity order does not necessarily improve the detection performance when the received pilot signal strength is relatively low. Therefore, this gives us a practical criterion on increasing transmit diversity order.

  • Just as infill material can reduce the shear strength of a rock joint, a layer of soft material between concrete and the surrounding rock socket can reduce pile shaft resistance of drilled shafts socketed in rocks. This can also result from construction methods that leave smeared or remoulded rock or drilling fluid residue on the sides of the rock sockets after concrete placement. The nature of the interface between the concrete pile shaft and the surrounding rock is critically important to the performance of the pile, and is heavily influenced by construction practice. Characteristics of the concrete-rock interface, such as roughness and the presence of the soft materials deposited during or after construction can significantly affect the shaft resistance response of the pile. In this study, we conducted the parametric study to examine the performance characteristics of drilled shafts socketed in smeared rock under the vertical load with the code of finite difference method of FLAC 2D. As the results of the current research, the parameters that affect the settlement of the pile head and the ultimate unit shaft resistance could be identified.

  • A study of the damage evolution laws for ductile materials was carried out to predict the ductile fracture behavior of a marine structural steel (EH36). We conducted proportional and non-proportional stress tests in the experiments. The existing 3-D fracture strain surface was newly calibrated using two fracture parameters: the average stress triaxiality and average normalized load angle taken from the proportional tests. Linear and non-linear damage evolution models were taken into account in this study. A damage exponent of 3.0 for the non-linear damage model was determined based on a simple optimization technique, for which proportional and non-proportional stress tests were simultaneously used. We verified the validity of the three fracture models: the newly calibrated fracture strain model, linear damage evolution model, and non-linear damage evolution model for the tensile tests of the asymmetric notch specimens. Because the stress evolution pattern for the verification tests remained at mode I in terms of the linear elastic fracture mechanics, the three models did not show significant differences in their fracture initiation predictions.

  • Laser welding is a high-density energy welding method. Hence, deep penetration and high welding speed can be realized with lower heat input as compared with conventional welding. The heat input of a CW laser welding is determined by laser power and welding speed. In this study, bead and lap welding of $0.5mm^t$ pure titanium was performed using a fiber laser. Its weldability with laser power and welding speed was evaluated. Penetration, bead width, joining length, and bead shape were investigated, and the mechanical properties were examined through tensile-shear strength tests. Welds with sound joining length were obtained when the laser power and welding speed were respectively 0.5 kW and 2.5 m/min, and 1.5 kW and 6 m/min, and the weld obtained at low output presented better ductility than that obtained at high output.

  • In recent times, gas insulated medium voltage (MV) circuit breakers (CB) form a vital component in power system network, considering its advantages such as reduced size and safety margins. Gas insulation characteristics of circuit breakers are generally measured by lightning impulse (LI) test according to IEC standard 60060-1 as a factory routine test. Considering the environmental issues of $SF_6$ gas, many research works are being carried out towards the mixture of $SF_6$ gases for high voltage insulation applications. However, few reports are only available regarding the LI withstand and streamer propagation characteristics (at both positive and negative polarity of waveform) of $SF_6/N_2$ gas mixture insulated medium voltage circuit breakers. In this paper, positive and negative polarity LI tests are carried out on 22 kV medium voltage circuit breaker filled with $SF_6/N_2$ gas mixture at different gas pressures (1-5 bar) and at different gas mixture ratios. Important LI parameters such as breakdown voltage, streamer velocity, time to breakdown and acceleration voltage are evaluated with IEC standard LI ($1.2/50{\mu}s$) waveform. Weibull distribution analysis of LI breakdown voltage data is carried out and 50% probability breakdown voltage, scale parameter and shape parameter are evaluated. Results illustrate that the $25%SF_6+75%N_2$ gas filled insulation considerably enhances the LI withstand and breakdown strength of MV circuit breakers. LI breakdown voltage of circuit breaker under negative polarity shows higher value when compared with positive polarity. Results show that maintaining the gas pressure at 0.3 MPa (3 bar) with 10% $SF_6$ gas mixed with 90% $N_2$ will give optimum lighting impulse withstand performance of 22 kV MV circuit breaker.

  • One area in which composites have been used rather extensively is for fabricating pressure vessel. These structures can be readily manufactured by filament winding, which is, as far as composite fabrication techniques are concerned, a relatively inexpensive method for producing composite structures. Unfortunately, the higher strength material and fabrication costs are not the only disadvantages of fiber-reinforced polymer composites when they are compared to metals. Additionally, these materials tend to exhibit brittle behavior. This is of particular concern when they are subjected to a low-velocity impact during routine handling a significant amount of structural damage can be introduced into the composites. The goals of this paper are to understand the impact damage behavior and identify the effect of surface coating materials on impact resistance in filament wound composite pressure vessels. For these, a series of low velocity impact tests was performed on specimens cutting from the full scale pressure vessel by the instrumented impact testing machine. The specimens are classified into two types with and without surface protective material. The visualization for impact damage is made by metallurgical microscope. Based on the impact force history and damage, the resistance parameters were employed and its validity in identifying the damage resistance of pressure vessel was reviewed. As the results, the impact resistance of the filament wound composites and its dependency on the protective material were evaluated quantitatively.

Especially u-LBS(Ubiquitous Location Based Services) is recognized as one of the most important services. U-LBS is based on the data created by recognizing objects including both human and matters at any time and anywhere. Many researches related with object locating method by using RF are in the process of studying However there are few researches on the location of objects. In this paper we propose the recognition method of the location of objects by using RF and USN technology. In detail, the strength of RF signal is used to recognize the location of objects. Also we discuss about the future work to enhance the recognition rate of location by using a number of conditions including the weather, temperature etc. And Genetic Algorithm is used to get the optimal parameters with which we can get the more exact recognition rate of location.

  • Recent complex battle field demands Network Centric Warfare(NCW) ability to control various parts into a cohesive unit. In path planning filed, the NCW ability increases complexity of path planning algorithm, and it has to consider a communication coverage map as well as traditional parameters such as minimum radar exposure and survivability. In this paper, pros and cons of various propagation models are summarized, and we suggest a coverage map generation method using a Longley-Rice propagation model. Previous coverage map based on line of sight has significant discontinuities that limits selection of path planning algorithms such as Dijkstra and fast marching only. If there is method to remove discontinuities in the coverage map, optimization based path planning algorithms such as trajectory optimization and Particle Swarm Optimization(PSO) can also be used. In this paper, the Longley-Rice propagation model is used to calculate continuous RF strengths, and convert the strength data using smoothed leaky BER for the coverage map. In addition, we also suggest other types of rough coverage map generation using a lookup table method with simple inputs such as terrain type and antenna heights only. The implemented communication coverage map can be used various path planning algorithms, especially in the optimization based algorithms.
