  • Factor analysis was applied to the phenotypic correlation matrix of 15 linear type traits (scored linearly 1 to 50 points) for 2035 Holstein cows of 38 sires computed from data collected between 1988 and 1992 in Beijing Shuangqiao Farm and Beijing Xijiao Farm. The 15 linear type traits were stature, body strength, body depth, dairy form, rump angle, rump length, rump width, rear leg side view, foot angle, fore udder attachment, rear udder height, rear udder width, udder cleft, udder depth and teat placement rear view. The first four components accounted for 49.1% of the total variance in type scores. Factor 1 reflected strong cows, with deep bodies, with long and wide rumps, and tall in stature. Factor 2 reflected cows with well attached fore udders, wide rear udders and whose udders were supported by strong suspensory ligaments with close teat placement. Factor 3 reflected cows with good dairyness, sickled in the hocks, high rear udders and udder floors above the hocks. Factor 4 reflected cows with sloping rumps from hooks to pins and with steep foot angle. Principal component and factor analyses are useful to clarify the relationships among type traits.

  • SiC composite materials are usually used to very high temperature condition such as thermal protection system materials at space vehicles, combustion chambers or engine nozzles because they have high specific strength and good thermal properties at high temperature. One of the most widely used fabrication methods of SiC composites is the chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) process. During the process, chemical gases including Si are introduced into porous preform which is made by carbon fibers for infiltration. Since the processes take a very long time, it is important to reduce the process time in designing the reactors and processes. In this study, both the gas flow and heat transfer in the reactors during the processes are analyzed using a computational fluid dynamics method in order to design reactors and processes for uniform, high quality SiC composites. Effects of flow rate and heater temperature as process parameters to the infiltration process were examined.

  • Cu-Co-Si based alloy has a strengthening mechanism for Co2Si intermetallic compounds deposited on the copper matrix after aging treatment and the solution treatment has a key influence on the strength and electrical conductivity of the final products. In this paper, the Cu-1.6%Co-0.38%Si alloy was fixed at the time and the solution treatment temperature was set at a temperature in the range of 800 to 950℃, and the change in mechanical properties was observed by fixing the temperature at 950℃ and changing the time. The microstructure was observed using an electron microscope and an optical microscope, and the changes in hardness, electrical conductivity, and bending workability after aging treatment were investigated. When the solution treatment time is less than 20 seconds, the solution treatment is not sufficient and the formation of precipitates contributing to the increase in hardness decreases and the hardness decreases after the aging treatment, and in more than 50 seconds, the hardness decreases due to the coarsening of the grains and the bending workability got worse.

  • In this study, seven R/C beams, designed by the steel fiber with ground granulated blast furnace slag and recycled fine aggregate were constructed and tested under monotonic loading. In the material development, micromechanics was adopted to properly select the optimized range of the composite based on steady-state cracking theory and experimental studies on the matrix and interracial properties. Experimental programs were carried out to improve and evaluate the structural performance of the test specimens: the load-displacement, the failure mode, the maximum strength were assessed. Test results showed that test specimens (BSSR-20, 40, 60, 80) were increased the maximum load carrying capacity by 2~9% and the ductility capacity by 10~22% in comparison with the standard specimen (BSS) respectively. And the specimens (BSSR-100) was decreased the maximum load carrying capacity by 5% and the ductility capacity by 44% in comparison with the standard specimen (BSS) respectively.

  • In purpose of introducing the inverse magnetostrictive properties into the structural ceramics, $Al_2O_3$ based nanocomposites dispersed with nano-sized Ni-Co particles were studied. The composites were fabricated by the hydrogen reduction and hot-pressing of $Al_2O_3$ and NiO-CoO mixed powders. The mixtures were prepared by using Ni- and Co-nitrate $(Ni(NO_3)_2\;{\cdot}\;6H_2O\;and\;Co(NO_3)_2\;{\cdot}\6H_2O)$ as source materials for the Ni-Co particles. Microstructural observations revealed that nano-sized Ni-Co particles were dispersed homogeneously at $Al_2O_3$ grain boundaries. High strength above 1 GPa was obtained for the $Al_2O_3/10$ wt% Ni-Co nanocomposite fabricated by a controlled powder preparation process. The inverse magnetostrictive response to applied stress was obtained due to the presence of dispersed Ni-Co particles, which indicates a possibility to incorporate new functions into the structural ceramics without loosing the mechanical properties.

  • Recently, aerospace structures have lightweight trend in order to reduce the cost of fuel and system, Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) can give the ability to reduce weight at 20~50% as the substitution of metal alloy, and there are advantages such as high Non-rigid, specific strength and anti-corrosion, but it is difficult to prove its destruction properties due to heterogeneous structure and anisotropy. In this study we designed specimen, inducing distinguishing destructions of material (for example, matrix crack, fiber breakage, and delamination) by using the Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) which is used in a real aircraft, to apply acoustic emission technique to aerospace structures. And we gained data via tensile testing and acoustic emission technique, from which each fault signal was classified respectively by using AE parameters and waveform.

  • The studies of particulate reinforced composites have been conducted for many years. The nanocomposites to be studied vigorously in recent years are one of them. We fabricated and studied multi-walled carbon nanotube(MWNT)/epoxy composites which may be useful as matrix for continuous fiber-reinforced composites. We investigated tensile properties of MWNT/epoxy composites as a function of MWNT concentration, which were prepared by the fabrication method established in this study. Tensile stiffness and strength increased 19% at 0.5 wt% and 12% at 0.2 wt%, respectively. We observed the reaggregation phenomenon of MWNTS during curing, which should be controlled to obtain higher tensile properties.

  • It is well known that the polymer matrix composite materials have good specific strength, making them appropriate for use in transport vehicle. Since the property of composite materials can be obtained only after manufacturing parts, the property depends on greatly on the fabrication process, which is different from metallic system. Therefore, in order to use composite materials for aircraft, the certifying agency requires a robust database with extensive tests and proof of the process unlike metals. Recently developed material qualification methodology by NCAMP (National Center for Advanced Materials Performance) has been accepted by FAA and EASA and can be applied to type certificate reducing time and cost of developing a composite materials database for aircraft application. This paper summarizes a study to establish the composite materials database to apply the NCAMP methodology to composite materials characterization for composite aircraft and to provide the effective materials database through Aerospace Composite Materials Data Center to be approved by Korea Civil Aviation Certification Agency.

  • Two-phase Al-21Ti-23Cr alloy containing 20 vol.% $\textrm{Cr}_{2}\textrm{Al}$ as a second phase in the $Ll_2$ matrix is located in the two- phase region of the Al- Ti- Cr phase diagram at $1150^{\circ}C$, while in the three-phase region at $1000^{\circ}C$. Based on this result, the mechanical properties of the A1-21Ti-23Cr alloy were enhanced through the refined precipitation of the third phase in the $Ll_2$ matrix by aging the alloy below $1000^{\circ}C$. It was observed that a several ,m of the third phase precipitated in the $Ll_2$ matrix through aging at $800^{\circ}C$ and $1000^{\circ}C$, but the precipitation was not observed below $600^{\circ}C$. Furthermore, the third phase was more finely precipitated at $800^{\circ}C$ than at $1000^{\circ}C$. Although the third phase precipitated at $800^{\circ}C$ and at $1000^{\circ}C$, the compressive yield strength increased rapidly at $800^{\circ}C$ only. This is probably attributable to the refined precipitation of the third phase in the $Ll_2$ matrix. It is expected that the precipitation of the third phase. which was confirmed to be the TiAlCr phase, improves the mechanical properties by preventing crack propagation in the $Ll_2$ matrix.

  • Proteoglycan is highly hydrophilic and negatively charged which enable them attract the water. The objective of study was to investigate the effects of Proteoglycan on microtensile bond strength of dentin adhesives and on architecture of dentin collagen matrix of acid etched dentin by removing the chondroitin sulphate attached on Proteoglycan. A flat dentin surface in mid-coronal portion of tooth was prepared. After acid etching, half of the specimens were immersed in 0.1 U/mL chondroitinase ABC (C-ABC) for 48 h at $37^{\circ}C$, while the other half were stored in distilled water. Specimens were bonded with the dentin adhesive using three different bonding techniques (wet, dry and re-wet) followed by microtensile bond strength test. SEM examination was done with debonded specimen, resin-dentin interface and acid-etched dentin surface with/without C-ABC treatment. For the subgroups using wet-bonding or dry-bonding technique, microtensile bond strength showed no significant difference after C-ABC treatment (p > 0.05). Nevertheless, the subgroup using rewetting technique after air dry in the Single Bond 2 group demonstrated a significant decrease of microtensile bond strength after C-ABC treatment. Collagen architecture is loosely packed and some fibrils are aggregated together and relatively collapsed compared with normal acid-etched wet dentin after C-ABC treatment. Further studies are necessary for the contribution to the collagen architecture of noncollagenous protein under the various clinical situations and several dentin conditioners and are also needed about long-term effect on bond strength of dentin adhesive.
