  • When vertical shafts are constructed in soft clay with low strength, there is a risk of basal heave, which causes the excavation surface to heave due to the low bearing capacity of the ground against the imbalance of earth pressure at the excavation surface. Methods of deriving a safety factor have been proposed to evaluate the stability against the basal heave. However, there are limitations in that it is difficult to accurately evaluate the heave stability because many assumptions are included in the theoretical derivation. In this study, assuming that a circular vertical shaft is constructed in soft clay, the existing safety factor equation proposed through a theoretical approach was supplemented. Bearing capacity according to the shaft geometry, inhomogeneity of the soil, and the effect of soil plug were considered theoretically and applied in a previous safety factor equation. A three-dimensional numerical analysis was conducted to simulate the occurrence of basal heave and review the supplemented equation through various case studies. Several series of case studies were conducted targeting various factors affecting heave stability. It was verified that the additionally considered characteristics were properly reflected in the supplemented equation. Furthermore, the effects of each factor constituting the safety factor equation were examined using the results of the numerical analysis performed by simulating various cases. It was confirmed that considering the undrained shear strength increment according to depth had the most significant effect on the calculation of the safety factor.

  • Jurassic granite from Pocheon area were tested to investigate the effect of microcracks on mechanical properties of the granite. Three oriented core specimens were used for uniaxial compressive tests and each core specimen are perpendicular to the axes'R'(rift plane),'c'(grain plane) and'H'(hardway plane), respectively Among vacious elastic constants, the variation of Poisson's ratio as function of the directions was examined. From the related chart between ratio of failure strength and Poisson's ratio, H-specimen shows the highest range in Poisson's ratio and Poisson's ratio decreases in the order of C-specimen and R-specimen. The curve pattern is nearly linear in stage $I\simIII$ but the slope increases abruptly in stage H-3. As shown in the related chart, diverging point of a curve is formed when ratio of failure strength is $0.92\sim0.96$ Stage IV -3 is out of elastic region. The behaviour of rock in the four fracturing stages was analyzed in term of the stress-volumetric strain me. From the stress increment-volumetric strain equations governing the behaviour of rock, characteristic material constants, a, n, Q, m and $\varepsilon_v^{mcf}$, were determined. Among these, inherent microcrack porosity$(a, 10^{-3})$ and compaction exponent(n) in the microcrack closure region(stage I ) show an order of $a^R(3.82)>a^G(3.38)>a^H(2.32)\;and\;n^R(3.69)>n^G(2.79)>n^H(1.99)4, respectively. Especially, critical volumetric microcrack strain($\varepsilon_v^{mcf}$) in the stage W is highest in the H-specimen, normal to the hardway plane. These results indicate a strong correlation between two major sets of microcracks and mechanical properties such as Poisson's ratio and material constants. Correlation of strength anisotropy with microcrack orientation can have important application in rock fracture studies.

  • Many researches on electromagnetic (EM) properties like dielectric constant and conductivity are performed since they can be characterized in nonmetallic cement-based material such as mortar and concrete. However, they are much affected by the moisture so that the behaviors of EM properties are to be clearly understood. In this paper, measurements for saturation and EM properties are performed for cement mortar specimens with five different water to cement (W/C) ratios including basic tests like compressive strength and porosity measurement. Every saturated specimens are exposed to room condition and the changes in EM properties caused by decreasing saturation are analyzed. In the saturated condition, higher measurement of EM properties are evaluated in the specimens with higher porosity, however this relationship is adversely changed with drying process. Since the pores without filled water causes the decreases in EM properties, the measurements show stable and linear increment with the lower W/C ratios. Furthermore, the increasing ratios of EM measurements with W/C ratio are shown with saturation and the relationships between them are derived through regression analysis.

  • In present work, anode support for micro-tubular SOFC was fabricated with outer diameter of 3 mm and characterized with microstructure, mechanical properties and gas permeability. The microstructure of surface and cross section of a porous anode support were analyzed by using SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) image. The gas permeability and the mechanical strength of anode support was measured and analysed by using differential pressure at the flow rates of 50, 100, 150 cc/min. and using universal testing machine respectively. The unit cell composed of NiO-YSZ, YSZ, YSZ-LSM/LSM/LSCF was fabricated and operated with reaction temperature and fuel flow rate and showed maximum power density of $1095mW/cm^2$ on the condition of $800^{\circ}C$. The performance of single cell for micro-tubular SOFC increased with the increasing the reaction temperature due to the decrement of ohmic resistance of cell by the increment of the ionic conductivity of electrolyte through the evaluation of electrochemical impedance analysis for single cell with reaction temperature.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of feeding limestone to high and low Ca layer diets on laying performance and eggshell quality in laying hens. Five hundred and twenty-eight HyLine brown layer allotted to six treatments consisting of high and low Ca diets. Limestone added to two kinds of basal diet with 1, 2 and 3 fold compared to conventional diet. Egg production was not different regardless Ca level and amount of added limestone in overall periods. However, the increment of egg observed in high Ca diet and added 10g limestone group during later period. Ca and limestone intake were increased as increasing feeding limestone. Eggshell strength and thickness were improved in high Ca consumption group. It was concluded that feeding Ca sources to conventional diets was helpful improving eggshell quality and reducing feed cost per egg mass by increasing proportion of Ca intake.

  • The present work develops a method of evaluating thrust deduction and wake for different loads of the propeller using the concerted application of the theoretical tools and experimental techniques. It also shows the applicability of the new method to the design of optimum hull form. Firstly, the problem of hull-propeller interaction was analyzed in terms of inviscid as well as viscous components of the thrust deduction and wake. The wavemaking resistance of a hull and propeller were mathematically represented by sources on the hull surface and sink on the propeller plane, respectively. The strength of sink was determined by utilizing the radial distributions of propeller load and nominal wake. The resistance increment due to a propeller and the axial perturbation flow induced by the hull in the propeller plane were calculated. Especially, the inviscid component of the thrust deduction was calculated by subtraction the wavemaking resistance of a bare hull, the wavemaking resistance of a free-running propeller and the augmentation of propeller resistance due to hull action from the wavemaking resistance of the hull with a propeller. The viscous components of the thrust deduction and wake were estimated as functions of propeller load which were established by the propeller load varying test after deduction the calculated inviscid components. Secondly, an analysis method of powering performance was developed based on the potential theory and the propeller load varying test. The hybrid method estimates the thrust deduction, wake and propeller open-water efficiency for different propeller load. This method can be utilized in the analysis of powering performance for the propeller load variation such as the added resistance due to hull surface roughness, the added resistance due to wind, etc. Finally, the hybrid method was applied to the optimum design of hull form. A series of afterbody shapes was obtained by systematically varying the waterplane and section shapes of a parent afterbody without changing the principal dimensions, block coefficient and prismatic coefficient. From the comparison of the predicted results such as wavemaking resistance, thrust deduction, wake and delivered power, an optimum hull form was obtained. The delivered power of the optimized hull form was reduced by 5.7% which was confirmed by model tests. Also the predicted delivered power by the hybrid method shows fairly good agreement with the test result. It is therefore considered that the new analysis method of powering performance can be utilized as a practical tool for the design of optimum hull form as for the analysis of powering performance for the propeller load variation in the preliminary design stage.

  • To obtain the basic data for preparing edible or biodegradable film, fish meal protein isolates (FMPI) were prepared through alkaline extraction. And FMPI's properties and the ester compounds permeability of FMPI film were measured. FMPI were extracted under various extracting time with 0.2 N NaOH solution at $60^{\circ}C$, Recovery ratios of FMPI extracted from fish meal were increased with extracting time increasing. Surface hydrophobicity of FMPI extracted for 1 hr showed highest value. Emulsifying activity index (EAI) was increased with the increasement of extracting time but its emulsifying stability index (ESI) showed an inverse results. Viscosity of FMPI solution showed the highest value at pH 2 but showed the lowest value at pH 4, The higher concentration of sorbitol as plasticizer showed the higher ethyl acetate permeability of FMPI film, Ethyl acetate permeability of FMPI films according to kind of plasticizers showed different degree and increased in order as follow: polyethylene glycol, glycerol and sorbitol. Ester compounds having the lower molecular weight showed the higher permeability. Increment of temperature increased the ethyl acetate permeability of FMPI film. FMPI haying higher surface hydrophobicity made FMPI film be higher tensile strength. On elongation of FMPI films, kinds of plasticizer were more effective than surface hydrophobicity of FMPI.

  • In this study, the feasibility of a single-stage thermophilic aerobic process for the treatment of high-strength food wastewater produced from the recycling process of food wastes was examined to substitute anaerobic digestion process. Also, the removal and stability of thermophilic aerobic process were assessed according to the changes of hydraulic retention times (HRTs) and organic loading rates (OLRs). When the OLR increased from 9.2 to $37.2kgCOD/m^3d$, a pH value in R1 (HRT : 5 d) significantly decreased to 5.0, due to the organic acid accumulation. On the other hand, the pH value in R2 (HRT : 10 d) was stable and R2 showed the high removal of COD, organic acid and lipid, even though the OLR increased from 4.6 to $18.6kgCOD/m^3d$. In R1, the COD loading rates for COD removal was suddenly dropped, as the COD loading rate increased from 18.6 to $28.4kgCOD/m^3d$. In contrast, R2 showed that the COD loading rates for COD removal increased with regard to increment in the loading rates of 3.61, 7.05, 9.43 and $12.2kgCOD/m^3d$, indicative of the high COD removal efficiency. Therefore, the results demonstrated that over 10-d HRT, the high concentration of raw food wastewater was efficiently treated in the single-stage thermophilic aerobic process.

  • GAP or GAP-co-BO based energetic thermoplastic elastomers (ETPEs) were synthesized by changing the hard segment content percent in the range of 30~45% by 5% difference. Thermal and mechanical properties of GAP-co-BO based ETPEs were compared to those of GAP based ETPEs. FT-IR results showed that the capability of forming hydrogen bond increases with increasing the hard segment content in GAP/GAP-co-BO based ETPE, and also the GAP-co-BO based ETPEs are stronger than GAP based ETPEs in the hydrogen bond formation. DSC and DMA results showed that the glass transition temperature (Tg) of GAP based ETPEs increased with the increment of the hard segment content, while the Tg of GAP-co-BO based ETPEs was maintained even the hard segment content increased. The storage modulus at room temperature of the GAP-co-BO based ETPEs was higher than that of the GAP based ETPEs. This was due to the strong phase separation behavior of the hard and soft segment of GAP-co-BO based ETPEs, which further resulted in the stronger breaking strength and lower tensile elongation at break point for GAP-co-BO based ETPE than the GAP based one.

  • We describe here an efficient in vitro propagation method of Silene acaulis subsp. arctica (Caryophyllaceae), one of the higher arctic angiosperms, through the multiple shoot regeneration after callus induction from the radicle. The seeds of S. acaulis subsp. arctica collected from Svalbard, the Norwegian Arctic, were germinated and calli were induced from the radicle on solid MS media supplemented with 0.25mg/L 2,4-D and 1mg/L $GA_3$ at both $10{\pm}1^{\circ}C\;and\;23{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ Two weeks after callus induction, the multiple shoots were efficiently regenerated on the MS media supplemented with 0.25 g/L BA and 0.05mg/L HPh. The total biomass increment of regenerated shoots increased most efficiently of S. acaulis subsp. afctica was showed the maximum efficiency in at $23{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ on 1/2 MS salt strength. The multiple regenerated plantlets of S. acaulis subsp. arctics were grown to normal plants on soil.
