A biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) sensor loaded with Candida sp. was designed and constructed for the quick measurement of the concentrations of biologically assimilable organic substances dissolved in water. The sensitivity of the sensor was higher for glucose, acetic acid, aspartic acid and glutamic acid than that for lactose, sucrose and lactic acid. The sensitivities of BOD sensors loaded with $Zn^{2+}$ tolerant and intact strains were almost identical while the sensitivity of sensor loaded with Cd$^{2+}$ tolerant strain was considerably lower. The sensitivities of the sensors loaded with intact or $Zn^{2+}$ tolerant strains did not change with the concentration of $Cd^{2+}$ in the aqueous solution while the sensitivity of the sensor loaded with $Cd^{2+}$ tolerant strain decreased slightly. The sensitivities of the sensors loaded with intact strain, $Zn^{2+}$ or $Cd^{2+}$ tolerant strains were not affected by the concentration of $Zn^{2+}$ in the aqueous solution.n.

In this paper, we implemented a polarimetric strain sensor using a Sagnac birefringence interferometer composed of a polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber (PM-PCF). By changing the length of the PM-PCF employed as the sensor head of the proposed sensor, the length dependence of the strain sensitivity was investigated. With respect to 5.0-, 7.5-, and 10.0-cm-long PM-PCFs, strain measurements were done in a measurement range of $0{\sim}6m{\varepsilon}$, and strain sensitivities of ~2.04, ~1.92, and ${\sim}1.73pm/{\mu}{\varepsilon}$ were obtained, respectively. If an ideal PM-PCF with no length dependence of a modal birefringence is used for the proposed sensor, the strain sensitivity is independent of the length of the sensor head (PM-PCF). In the practical PM-PCF used in experiments, however, a shorter PM-PCF has a higher length dependence of the modal birefringence due to its imperfectness and nonuniformity of the internal structure, resulting in a higher length dependence of the strain sensitivity.
An experiment has been conducted to measure the impact of UV radiation sensitivity on dermatophytes (Microsporum boullardii) by different UV radiation exposure time interval (1 min, 2 min 5 min, 10 min and 20 min) in degradation of keratin (Feather) in growth promoting substances of protein, cysteine, cystine and methionine from 7 to 28 days of incubation period. Mutant strain caused maximum weight loss with 1 minutes of UV radiation exposure at 21 day and mutant strain became immune in sensitivity at 14 days for decomposition of feathers. Maximum protein caused at 21st days with 20 minutes U.V radiation exposure and immune sensitivity had deducted with other UV radiation exposure time. On 28 days, mutant strains became immune with all exposure times, Whereas maximum methionine caused at 21st days with 20 minutes UV radiation exposure. Maximum cysteine caused at $14^{th}$ day with 5 minutes UV radiation exposure and mutant strain showed immune response at all time periods. Cystine production was also followed by cysteine at 21 day and also showed complete immune response with 1 and 2 minutes UV radiation exposure at7 and 14 days. Thus mutant strain of Microspornm boullardii can be used as a biotechnological tool for production of growth promoting substances.
The companion paper presents a new three-parameter model for the uniaxial rate-sensitive material response, which is based on a bilinear static stress-strain relationship with kinematic strain-hardening. This paper extends the proposed model to trilinear static stress-strain relationships for steel and concrete, and discusses the implementation of the new models within an incremental-iterative solution procedure. For steel, the three-parameter rate-function is employed with a trilinear static stress-strain relationship, which allows the utilisation of different levels of rate-sensitivity for the plastic plateau and strain-hardening ranges. For concrete, on the other hand, two trilinear stress-strain relationships are used for tension and compression, where rate-sensitivity is accounted for in the strain-softening range. Both models have been implemented within the nonlinear analysis program ADAPTIC, which is used herein to provide verification for the models, and to demonstrate their applicability to the rate-sensitive analysis of steel and reinforced concrete structures.

Light losses in optical fibers are investigated by a fiber optic OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometry) sensor system to develop fiber optic probes for structural strain measurement. The sensing fibers are manufactured 3 kinds of fibers: one is single mode fiber, and second is multimode fiber, and the third is low-cladding-index fiber. Fiber bending tests are performed to determine the strain sensitivity according to the strain of gage length of optical fibers. In the result of this experiments, the strain sensitivity of the single mode fiber was shown the highest value than others. The fiber optic strain probe was manufactured to verify the feasibility of the structural strain measurement. In this test, the fiber optic strain probe of the OTDR sensor could be easily made by the single mode fiber.
To better understand the formation of necking in drawing processes of fibers, strain distributions during drawing processes have been analyzed. For simplicity, one-dimensional incompressible steady flow at a constant temperature was assumed and quasi-static model was used. To describe mechanical properties of solid polymers, non-linear visco-plastic material properties were assumed using the power law type hardening and rate-sensitive equation. The effects of various parameters on the neck formation were matematically analyzed. As material property parameters, strain-hardening parameter, visco-elastic coefficient and strain-rate sensitivity were considered and, for process parameters, the drawing ratio and the process length were considered. It was found that rate-insensitive materials do not reach a steady flow state and the rate-sensitivity plays a key role to have a steady flow. Also, the neck formation is mainly affected by material properties, especially for the quasi-static model. If the process length changes, the strain distribution was found to be proportionally re-distributed along the process line by the factor of the total length change.

This paper is to predict quality deterioration resulting from a caulking process of yoke which is a part of automotive steering system. The caluking is a plastic deformation process involving such as impact of high speed tool, contacts between part and fixtures and strain rate sensitivity of the part material. Elaborate application of finite element method is neccesary to calculate changes of part dimensions because they fall into a level of tolerances. Simple work hardening and strain rate sensitive model is proposed fur the material and applied for the simulation by using Abaqus which is able to cater for elastoplastic rate sensitive material and contacts. Numerical results of test models that represent tensile bar and tensile plate are compared with material data inputs. Dimensional changes for the yoke are calculated from simulations and compared to the mesurements and they show good agreement. The method presented here with the material model proved to be valuable to assess quality deterioration for similar metal forming processes.
The main purpose of this study is to characterize the size-dependent strain rate sensitivity in structural steel using the continue stiffness measurement (CSM) indentation. A series of experiments, such as CSM indentation and optical microscope examination, has been performed at the room temperature at different rate conditions. The results indicated that indentation hardness, strain rate, and flow stress showed size-dependent behavior. The dependency of indentation hardness, strain rate, and flow stress on the indentation size was attributed to the transition of the dislocation nucleation rate and the dislocation behaviors during the indentation process. Since both hardness and strain rate showed the size-dependent behavior, SRS tended to depend on the indentation depth. The results indicated that the SRS was quite high over 2.0 at the indentation depth of 240 nm and quickly dropping to 0.08, finally around 0.046 at large indents. The SRS values at large indentations strongly agree with the general range reported for several types of low-carbon steel in the literature (Chatfield and Rote 1974, Nguyen et al. 2018b, Luecke et al. 2005). The results from the present study can be used in both static and dynamic analyses of structures as well as to assess and understand the deformation mechanism and the stress-state of material underneath the indenter tip during the process of the indentation testing.

A continuum-based design sensitivity analysis (DSA) method fur non-shape problems is developed for geometrically nonlinear elastic structures. The non-shape problem is characterized by the design variables that are not associated with the domain of system like sizing, material property, loading, and so on. Total Lagrangian formulation with the Green-Lagrange strain and the second Piola-Kirchhoff stress is employed to describe the geometrically nonlinear structures. The spatial domain is discretized using the 4-node isoparametric plane stress/strain elements. The resulting nonlinear system is solved using the Newton-Raphson iterative method. To take advantage of the derived analytical sensitivity In topology optimization, a fast and efficient design sensitivity analysis method, adjoint variable method, is employed and the material property of each element is selected as non-shape design variable. Combining the design sensitivity analysis method and a gradient-based design optimization algorithm, an automated design optimization method is developed. The comparison of the analytical sensitivity with the finite difference results shows excellent agreement. Also application to the topology design optimization problem suggests a very good insight for the layout design.

Terzaghi's theory of one-dimensional consolidation is restricted in its applicability to relatively thin layers and small incremental loading. Because it is assumed to infinitesimal strain and linear material function. For this reason, Gibson et al established a rigorous formulation for the one-dimensional nonlinear finite strain consolidation theory. There are some difficulties in the application of finite strain consolidation theory. The developed program consisted of several forms and modules. These forms and modules with graphic-user-interfaced format are used in analysis of consolidation practices. For the purpose of verification of developed program. the results of case study and prediction of developed program are compared. The results of comparison is fairly well with prediction and measured data. And with varying finite strain consolidation parameter, g(e) or λ(e), the sensitivity of predicted values were examined.
