The purpose of this study is to find the analytic solution for determining the optimal capacity (lot-size) of a batch-storage network to meet the finished product demand under infrequent shutdowns. Batch processes are bound to experience random but infrequent operating time losses. Two common remedies for these failures are duplicating another process or increasing the process and storage capacity, both of which are very costly in modern manufacturing systems. An optimization model minimizing the total cost composed of setup and inventory holding costs as well as the capital costs of constructing processes and storage units is pursued with the framework of a batch-storage network of which flows are susceptible to infrequent shutdowns. The superstructure of the plant consists of a network of serially and/or parallel interlinked batch processes and storage units. The processes transform a set of feedstock materials into another set of products with constant conversion factors.A novel production and inventory analysis method, the PSW (Periodic Square Wave) model, is applied. The advantage of the PSW model stems from the fact it provides a set of simple analytic solutions in spite of a realistic description of the material flow between processes and storage units. The resulting simple analytic solution can greatly enhance a proper and quick investment decision at the early plant design stagewhen confronted with diverse economic situations.

The purpose of this study is to find analytic solution of determining the optimal capacity (lot-size) of multiproduct acyclic multistage production and inventory system to meet the finished product demand under the constraint of finite intermediate storage. Intermediate storage is a practical way to mitigate the material flow imbalance through the line of supply and demand chain. However, the cost of constructing and operating storage facilities is becoming substantial because of increasing land value, environmental and safety concern. Therefore, reasonable decision-making about the capacity of processes and storage units is an important subject for industries. The industrial solution for this subject is to use the classical economic lot sizing method, EOQ/EPQ(Economic Order Quantity/Economic Production Quantity) model, incorporated with practical experience. But EOQ/EPQ model is not suitable for the chemical plant design with highly interlinked processes and storage units because it is developed based on single product and single stage. This study overcomes the limitation of the classical lot sizing method. The superstructure of the plant consists of the network of serially and/or parallelly interlinked non-continuous processes and storage units. The processes transform a set of feedstock materials into another set of products with constant conversion factors. A novel production and inventory analysis method, PSW(Periodic Square Wave) model, is applied to describe the detail material flows among equipments. The objective function of this study is minimizing the total cost composed of setup and inventory holding cost. The advantage of PSW model comes from the fact that the model provides a set of simple analytic solutions in spite of realistic description of the material flows between processes and storage units. the resulting simple analytic solution can greatly enhance the proper and quick investment decision for the preliminary plant design problem confronted with economic situation.
Mathematical models have been developed in which storage-relaease processes of pollutants are modeled to explain storage effect of variations of flow and channel geometry on mixing and transport of polluted releases in natural channels including low flow conditions. The models were tested by using the laboratory dispersion data. Comparisons between concentration-time curves predicted by using the proposed model incorporating two different submodels show that Storage-Diffusion Model seems to be superior in explaining physical processes inside the storage zone to the Storage-Exchange Model even though accuracies of simulation results by two models are about the same. The proposed model shows significant improvement over the conventional one-dimensional dispersion model in predicting natural mixing processes in open channels.
As a trend toward multi-product batch processes is increasing in Chemical Process Industry (CPI), multi-product batch scheduling has been actively studied. But the optimal production scheduling problems for multi-product batch processes are known as NP-complete. Recently Ku and Karimi [5] have studied Simulated Annealing(SA) and Jung et al.[6] have developed Modified Simulated Annealing (MSA) method which was composed of two stage search algorithms for scheduling of batch processes with UIS and NIS. Jung et al.[9] also have studied the Common Intermediate Storage(CIS) policy which have accepted as a high efficient intermediate storage policy. It can be also applied to pipeless mobile intermediate storage pacilities. In spite of these above researches, there have been no contribution of scheduling of CIS policy for chemical batch processes. In this paper, we have developed another MSA for scheduling chemical batch processes with searching the suitable control parameters for CIS policy and have tested the this algorithm with randomly generated various scheduling problems. From these tests, MSA is outperformed to general SA for CIS batch process system.

The purpose of this study is to find the analytic solution of determining the optimal capacity of processes and storages to meet the product demand. Recent trend to reduce product delivery time and to provide high quality product to customer requires the increasing capacity of storage facilities. However, the cost of constructing and operating storage facilities is becoming substantial because of increasing land value, environmental and safety concern. Therefore, reasonable decision making about the capacity of processes and storages is important subject for industries. The industrial solution for this subject is to use the classical economic lot sizing method, EOQ(Economic Order Quantity) model, trimmed with practical experience but the unrealistic assumption of EOQ model is not suitable for the chemical plant design with highly interlinked processes and storages. This study, a first systematic attempt for this subject, clearly overcomes the limitation of classical lot sizing method. The superstructure of the plant consists of the network of serially and/or parallelly interlinked processes and storages. A novel production and inventory analysis method, PSW(Periodic Square Wave) model, is applied. The objective function of optimization is minimizing the total cost composed of setup and inventory holding cost. The advantage of PSW model comes from the fact that the model provide a set of simple analytic solution in spite of realistic description of material flow between process and storage. The resulting simple analytic solution can greatly enhance the proper and quick investment decision for the preliminary plant design confronting diverse economic situation.

An inventory control system was developed for multiproduct batch plants with an arbitrary number of batch processes and storage units. Customer orders are received by the plant at intervals and in quantities that are subject to random fluctuations. The objective of the plant operation is to minimize the total cost while maintaining inventory levels within the storage or warehouse capacity by adjusting the startup times, the quantities of raw material orders, and production batch sizes. An adaptive model-based control algorithm was developed that uses a periodic square wave model to represent the flows of material between the processes and the storage units. The effectiveness of this approach was demonstrated by performing simulations.

The determination of completion time constitutes an important step in developing algorithms for short-term production scheduling. Existing completion time algorithms of multi-product batch processes often assume that intermediate storage tanks are always available when it is needed. In this paper, we consider a serial multi-product batch plants with ZW and NIS policy intermediate storge tank. We limit storage residence time and allocated products in the intermediate storage tank to minimize the quality change of the stored material as well as to reduce the clearing time during product change. A set of recurrence relations is suggested to calculate the completion times for the given batch sequence of products on all processing units. Also analytic solution for the suggested model is solved by a graphical method. The effectiveness of these results is proved by a few illustrative examples.
The aim of this study was to find an analytic solution to the problem of determining the optimal capacity (lot-size) of a batch-storage network to meet demand for a finished product in a system undergoing random failures of operating time and/or batch material. The superstructure of the plant considered here consists of a network of serially and/or parallel interlinked batch processes and storage units. The production processes transform a set of feedstock materials into another set of products with constant conversion factors. The final product demand flow is susceptible to short-term random variations in the cycle time and batch size as well as long-term variations in the average trend. Some of the production processes have random variations in product quantity. The spoiled materials are treated through regeneration or waste disposal processes. All other processes have random variations only in the cycle time. The objective function of the optimization is minimizing the total cost, which is composed of setup and inventory holding costs as well as the capital costs of constructing processes and storage units. A novel production and inventory analysis, the PSW (Periodic Square Wave) model, provides a judicious graphical method to find the upper and lower bounds of random flows. The advantage of this model is that it provides a set of simple analytic solutions while also maintaining a realistic description of the random material flows between processes and storage units; as a consequence of these analytic solutions, the computation burden is significantly reduced.
Global warming is considered one of the great challenges of the twenty-first century. In order to reduce the ever-increasing amount of methane (CH4) released into the atmosphere, and thus its impact on global climate change, CH4 storage technologies are attracting significant research interest. CH4 storage processes are attracting technological interest, and methane is being applied as an alternative fuel for vehicles. CH4 storage involves many technologies, among which, adsorption processes such as processes using porous adsorbents are regarded as an important green and economic technology. It is very important to develop highly efficient adsorbents to realize techno-economic systems for CH4 adsorption and storage. In this review, we summarize the nanomaterials being used for CH4 adsorption, which are divided into non-carbonaceous (e.g., zeolites, metal-organic frameworks, and porous polymers) and carbonaceous materials (e.g., activated carbons, ordered porous carbons, and activated carbon fibers), with a focus on recent research.
Changes in antioxidative substances-sesamol, sesamin and sesamolin - and mineral contents of sesame oil during refining processes have been studied to investigate the oxidative stability of oils during the storage at $70^{\circ}C$. Fe, Cu, Mg and Zn were nearly removed from the oil by the degumming process. During storage, the changes of total volatile contents in crude and degummed sesame oil were not noticeable but those in alkali-refined and deodorized sesame oil were increased at early period of the storage. The increases of hexanal and pentanal were most noticeable and their concentration was increased markedly in alkali-refined, bleached and deodorized sesame oil at early period of the storage. During refining processes and storage, sesamin was relatively stable but the content of sesamolin was decreased. The content of sesamol was decreased until alkali-refining process but increased during a bleaching process. The content of sesamolin tended to decrease with increasing of sesamol during storage.
