  • In this paper we implemented a field-sequential stereoscopic endoscope system that can generate stereoscopic images with different perspective depth using LCD stutter. Re stereoscopic image is generated from stereoscopic adapter that has LCD shutter. We have compared the stereoscopic depth of a field-sequential stereoscopic endoscope system with that of the conventional endoscope system. And the implemented system is verified by evaluation the field-sequential stereoscopic image on a Monitor. This system will be use to medical instruments in time.

  • This paper discusses a method for precise depth detection in stereoscopic images. The geometry of a stereoscopic camera and a display system is presented. It was found that there exists a difference between the calculated depth and the perceived depth of objects. For precise depth detection, the proposed registration method is investigated and proved by experiment in stable condition.

  • Recently, RGB images and depth maps have been supplied to academic fields. The depth maps are utilized to the generation of stereoscopic images in the diverse formats according to the users' preference. A variety of methods that use depth maps have been introduced so far. One of applications is a medical field. In this area, the improvement of the perceptual quality of 2D medical images has gained much interest. In this paper, we propose a novel scheme that expands the conventional method to 3D stereoscopic image, thereby achieving the perceptual depth quality improvement as well as 3D stereoscopic perception enhancement at the same time. For this, contrast transformation as well as depth darkening are proposed and their performance is validated through the subjective test. Subjective experiments peformed for stereoscopic enhancement as well as visual fatigue validate that the proposed method achieves better 3D perception than the usage of the original stereoscopic image and suggests the limitation in terms of the visual fatigue.

  • This paper proposes an algorithm for creating stereoscopic video from a monoscopic video. A viewer uses depth perception clues called a vanishing point which is the farthest from a viewer's viewpoint in order to perceive depth information from objects and surroundings thereof to the viewer. The viewer estimates the vanishing point with geometrical features in monoscopic images, and can perceive the depth information with the relationship between the position of the vanishing point and the viewer's viewpoint. In this paper, we propose a method to estimate a vanishing point with edge direction histogram in a general monoscopic image and to create a depth map depending on the position of the vanishing point. With the conversion method proposed through the experiment results, it is seen that stable stereoscopic conversion of a given monoscopic video is achieved.

  • The development of stereoscopic display hardwares and 3D authoring softwares expands its application areas from particular virtual simulation applications to general movies, games, advertising applications. However, the binocular-based 3D stereoscopic images cause fatigue to viewers. Recent performed many research results about the binocular stereoscopy's depth perception and viewers' fatigue are derived from experimental users studies. In some results, watching and making guidelines for 3D stereoscopic imaging contents are introduced. The 3D stereoscopic-related contents have the contradictory aspects, which are audiences' pursuit of a tolerable minimum fatigue and producer's its of excessive depth changes for providing viewers' immersion. This paper provides user experiments and analysis data in aspects of 3D depth changes. For use of producers, a safety zone and translational velocity of 3D depth changes are introduced. Also, on the viewer side, we present the depth change adaptation time by using an EEG device.

  • Stereoscopic Images provide depth information with the relative distances between the objects in the images. There are many different ways to extract disparity maps from the visible spectral images. For the infrared spectral range, the same approach cannot be utilized for the innate low resolution and colorless features because typical methods require corresponding features between the images. The authors suggest a new approach that makes use of image segmentation to obtain depth information for stereoscopic millimeter-wave images. For image segmentation a selective visual attention model based on the theory of a feature-integration of attention is used. Experimental results show the proposed method provides reasonable depth information for object shape recognition and display.

  • Recently, advancement in the visual technology has lead to the further development of the three dimensional (3D) imaging systems. The visual perception to view a pair of images simultaneously, is a crucial factor to build a stereoscopic 3D image. In this paper, we present the depth cues between the intensities of the two images when viewing with both eyes. Due to this stereoscopic effect, objects at different distances from the eyes differ in their horizontal positions, giving the depth cue of horizontal disparity. By simple image processing technique, we also present the binocular disparity map between the two images. A median filter has been used to filter out all the noises occurring in the disparity map image.

  • In this paper we propose real-time cocersion methods that can convert into stereoscopic image using depth map that is formed by motion detection extracted from 2-D moving image and region segmentation separated from image. Depth map which represents depth information of image and the proposed absolute parallax image are used as the measure of qualitative evaluation. We have compared depth information, parallax processing, and segmentation between objects with different depth for proposed and conventional method. As a result, we have confirmed the proposed method can offer realistic stereoscopic effect regardless of direction and velocity of moving object for a moving image.

  • Conventional stereoscopic (3D) displays using binocular parallax generate unnatural conflicts between convergence and accommodation. Those conflicts can affect the ability to fuse binocular images and may cause visual fatigue. This study examined time-series changes in visual fatigue and depth sensation while viewing stereoscopic images with changing parallax. We examined the physiological changes, including the subjective symptoms of visual fatigue, when viewing five parallax conditions. The time-series results suggest that 2D and 3D images produce significantly different types of visual fatigue over the range of binocular disparity.
