  • In this study, Indonesia low rank coal, which has moisture content of around 26%, is dried less than 5% by using a laboratory-scale (batch type) steam fluidized-bed dryer in order to produce the low-moisture, high rank coal. Normally, CCS (carbon capture and storage) process discharges $CO_2$ and steam mixture gas around $100-150^{\circ}C$ of temperature after regeneration reactor. The final purpose of this research is to dry low rank coal by using the outlet gas of CCS process. At this stage, steam is used as heat source for drying through the heat exchanger and $CO_2$ is used as fluidizing gas to the dryer. The experimental variables were the steam flow rate ranging from 0.3 to 1.1 kg/hr, steam temperature ranging from 100 to $130^{\circ}C$, and bed height ranging from 9 to 25 cm. The characteristics of the coal, before and after drying, were analyzed by a proximate analysis, the heating value analysis and particle size analysis. In summary, the drying rate of low rank coal was increased as steam flow rate and steam temperature increased and increased as bed height decreased.

  • The recycling of titanium turning scraps requires the removal of cutting oil and other contaminants remaining on the surface. In this study, an experiment was conducted in which titanium scraps were cleaned by a combination of ultrasonic immersion-steam cleaning and subsequent drying at high temperature. To determine the removal mechanism of cutting oil, the contact angle between titanium surface and cutting oil was measured. The result confirmed the optimum condition of the immersion solution of the titanium turning scraps. In the case of immersion cleaning of Na4P2O7 aqueous solution, the degree of carbon removed in the cutting oil was the highest at 50℃, and it was confirmed that the carbon content obtained from the combination of steam cleaning and ultrasonic immersion-steam cleaning was lower than that from steam cleaning after ultrasonic immersion. The oxidation and decomposition behaviors of cutting oil were investigated using Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and the result was applied in the high temperature drying process. From the results of the high temperature drying tests, it was concluded that 200℃ is the optimal drying temperature.

  • Effects of different drying processes, such as hot air drying (HA), superheated steam with hot air drying (SHS/HA), and superheated steam with far infrared radiation (SHS/FIR), on the properties of cherry tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum var. cerasiforme) were studied. Characteristics of dried cherry tomatoes were determined by examining the water content, internal microstructure, and rehydration capacity under different drying processes. Moreover, ascorbic acid (AA) and lycopene levels were also measured to evaluate thermal damage caused by drying. Cherry tomatoes dried using both SHS/HA and SHS/FIR had water content and water activity similar to those of intermediate moisture food, indicating partial dehydration after combined drying processes. Although AA and lycopene levels decreased drastically after drying, tomatoes dried using SHS/FIR showed the lowest losses of AA and lycopene among samples. Cherry tomatoes dried using SHS/FIR showed a less compact internal cell structure than that of cherry tomatoes dried using HA and SHS/HA, resulting in the highest rehydration capacity. These results suggest that a combined drying process such as SHS/FIR is more effective than conventional hot air drying for the production of partially dried cherry tomatoes with improved quality attributes.

  • For the purpose of developing a safe & hygienic manufacturing method to acquire low levels of benzo(a)pyrene in black and red ginseng products, this study investigated the effects of steam- and dry-processing temperatures on benzo(a)pyrene production in ginseng. By the red ginseng with a fix dry-process temperature of $50^{\circ}C$ and setting the steam-process temperature between $80{\sim}120^{\circ}C$, an extremely small amount(0.1 ppb) of benzo(a)pyrene was produced, indicating there was no relationship between the steam-temperature and benzo(a)pyrene production. On the other hand, when the red and black ginseng were steamed at the fixed temperature of $100^{\circ}C$ and dried at various temperatures between $50{\sim}120^{\circ}C$, the amount of benzo(a)pyrene produced was closely connected with the dry-temperature, and increased with higher drying temperatures. Upon repeating the steam and dry process nine times, in which the steam-temperature was set at $100^{\circ}C$ and the dry-temperature at $50^{\circ}C$, higher amount of benzo(a)pyrene were produced in red and black ginseng, respectively, with increasing steam- and dry-processing time. However, the level of benzo(a)pyrene still remained extremely small(below 0.12 ppb), showing a maximum amount in the black ginseng that was steamed and dried nine times. This suggests that the fine root of ginseng may be carbonized by increasing the number of times it is steam- and dry-processed. From the above results, this study determined that the optimum temperatures for manufacturing red and black ginseng products with safe levels of benzo(a)pyrene would be a temperature between 80 and $120^{\circ}C$ for steaming and a temperature less than $50^{\circ}C$ for drying.

  • The effects of drum spacing, steam pressure and drum speed on drying rate of minced fish flesh on both single and double drum dryers were studied. Starch additions in the form of tapioca flour up to 2.5% have been found satisfactory for aiding in sheet formation at the doctor blade. When the retention time was adjusted to maintain a constant product moisture, the highest production rate was obtained at the smallest drum spacing and the highest steam pressure within the limits of experimental conditions considered. The operating conditions suitable for producing the flakes with 5% moisture were: 100 kPa (steam pressure), 0.1 mm (drum spacing) and 3 rpm (drum speed). The production rate and overall heat transfer coefficient under these conditions were $12.1\;kg/m^2$hr and 950 $W\;/m^2K$ respectively. The drying data were fitted well to the conventional drying model, namely $MR\;=\;A\;\exp\;(-k{\theta})$, resulting in the various drying constants depending the operating conditions.

  • When the food garbage of general hospital was dried by the rapid steam drying process, the water content was changed to 1.3% from 77.8~82.8%. In this experiment, weight reduction rate was 80%, and electricity consumption was 2.4Kwh. Dried compost from this rapid steam drying process was brown pellets, which was consist of 27.77% crude protein and 3.19% crude fiber. Even though these pellets were slightly short of crude fat and crude ash content, these were analysed as a possible supplementary feed for pig. On the condition of drying food garbage mixed with 5% pulverized chaff, the necessary drying time was shortened by 1 hour, weight reduction rate was 76%, and reduction rate of electricity consumption was 42%. But contents of crude fiber and crude ash were increased to about 2 times. In case of adding new food garbage continuously to the composted food garbage mixed with 3.4% pulverized chaff, weight reduction rate and contents of crude fiber and crude ash were decreased gradually, but contents of crude protein and crude fat were increased. In case of composting food garbage from buffet, both drying time and electricity consumption were reduced, and ingredients of compost were higher than that of assorted feed for pig in the market.

  • Increasing energy costs have caused profitability problems for paper suppliers. Therefore unprofitable lines are being closed down. The actions aiming for improved profits are focused either on cost savings or on increasing the capacity of the remaining machines. The runnability of a paper machine and its total efficiency have a significant effect on energy consumption. Producing one ton of waste paper consumes at least as much energy as producing the same amount of sellable end product. New automation solutions enable significant cost-effective improvements to the total efficiency of a line without large investment projects. The measures focus on minimizing changes, interruptions, interruption recovery times and grade change times. Newest actuators, online quality measurements and wet end analysators create an improvement potential, which can be optimally implemented with the latest machine direction control solutions, based on model predictive control concepts. Equally, drying management is significant to the energy consumption. The newest control strategies optimize the use of various drying actuators for different situations; either by responding to changes as efficiently as possible or by using only the cheapest energy sources in stable situations. An even steam supply, which is vital for paper machines, is achieved with control for the power plant steam network. This makes possible to avoid the delays upon starting the paper machine and assure an even steam supply for the drying section and the actuators. This document describes means which have brought significant energy and raw material savings for paper machines. Metso Automation has provided efficiency improvement packages, which are usually based on optimized control of dry weight and drying in all running conditions. The solutions are based on performance analysis, on which the estimations for improvement potential and the necessary actions are based on. Typically benefits on an annual level have been from hundreds of thousands of euros to over one million euro. For example, variations in dry weight have been decreased more than 50%. The results are presented with a few examples. Additionally, the analysis models, adjustment solutions and the changes in running methods with which the results were achieved, are presented.

  • In this study, the effects of curing procedures on the mechanical properties of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) were investigated. The replacement ratios by recycled coarse aggregate were 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% by mass of natural coarse aggregate. Steam curing was adopted to all recycled aggregate concrete mixtures. Compressive and split tensile strength, water porosity, chloride ions penetration resistance and drying shrinkage measurements were carried out to determine performance of the RACs. From the test results, it was found that the mechanical performance of RAC decreased as the recycled aggregate contents increased. Furthermore, steam curing reduced the compressive and split tensile strength, water porosity and total charge of RAC, especially at the early ages. However, at the later ages, the beneficial effect of steam curing was less prominent. This study clearly showed that initial steam curing could be one of practical methods to improve performance of RAC with higher replacement ratio of recycled aggregate.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of superheated steam drying on physicochemical and microbial characteristics of Korean traditional actinidia (Actinidia arguta) leaves. Actinidia leaves were dried at steam temperature of $350^{\circ}C$ and oven temperature of $150^{\circ}C$ for 40-200 sec. Moisture content and water activity decreased with increasing the drying time, while color values including L, a, and b values and total color difference (${\Delta}E$) increased as drying time increased. The relationship between moisture content and water activity showed an exponential fit with high correlation vlaue ($R^2=0.9909$). Total phenolics and flavonoids content and antioxidant activity such as DPPH radical scavenging activity, ABTS radical scavenging activity, and FRAP assay of dried actinidia leaves increased with increasing the drying time up to 160 sec, but dramatically decreased at drying of 200 sec. The numbers of total areobic bacteria of leaves was not detected at drying time over 120 sec and coliform of all the samples was not detected. As a results, the superheated steam was an very effective drying method of increase to the nutritional and sanitary quality of dried Korean traditional actinidia leaves.

  • The drying test was carried on the globular type cow manure pellet for use in solid fuel applications. The globular type cow manure pellet fuel was sorted according to size by rotatory sieves. The three kind of drying methods such as convection hot-air drying method, infrared ray drying method and superheated steam method were used to dry the globular type cow manure pellet. Among the three kind of drying methods, superheated steam method of dry time was the shortest. The apparent specific gravity and low calorific value of dried cow manure pelltes was about $250{\sim}350kg/m^3$ and above 3,000 kcal/kg respectively. The smaller the particle size of cow manure pellets, the less drying time was required. The time was required very less for drying smaller particle size cow manure pellet when compared to larger size. In the case of the same drying condition, it has been found that reducing the particle size of cow manure fuel pellet is an important factor for shortening the drying time of the livestock manure pellet.
