한국과 미국 중학교 교과서의 통계 영역 수학과제가 제시하는 통계적 추론에 대한 학습기회 탐색 (How middle-school mathematics textbooks of Korea and the US support to develop students' statistical reasoning)

  • This study attempts to examine statistical tasks in the middle-school mathematics textbooks of Korea and Connected Mathematics 3 [CMP] of the US in terms of an opportunity-to-learn for statistical reasoning. We utilized an analytical framework consisting of types of context, statistical reasoning level, cognitive demand of the tasks, and types of student response. The findings from the task analysis suggested that Korean textbooks focused on finding answers by applying previously learned algorithms or formulas and thus provided students with very limited opportunities to experience statistical reasoning. Also, the results proposed that the mathematical tasks in statistics unit of CMP3 offer more essential and complex tasks that promote students' conceptual understanding of various statistical ideas and statistical reasoning in a meaningful way.

Science communication matters: An exploratory study of academic public engagement in Vietnam using Bayesian statistics

  • The overarching purpose of this study is to examine the current status of academic public engagement in Vietnam. Data were obtained from a survey with 245 university lecturers, and descriptive statistics were used jointly with Bayesian statistics as tools for analysis. This study reveals that a significant proportion of university lecturers are not involved in public engagement, neither through the public press (66.5%) nor social media (49%). Those who have been active in public engagement use the public press and social networks to communicate science, with the latter being more used than the former. In addition, this study also pointed out that experienced scientists tend to engage with the public press, while early-career researchers often choose social networks. The findings of this study provide implications for higher education policymakers and administrators.

  • Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT) also known as sleeping sickness, is a neglected tropical vector borne disease caused by trypanosome protozoa transmitted by bites of infected tsetse fly. The basic reproduction number, R0 derived using the next generation matrix method which shows that the disease persists in the population if the value of R0 > 1. The numerical simulations of optimal control model carried out to determine the control strategy that can combat HAT under the minimum cost. The results indicate that, the use of both education campaign, treatment and insecticides are more efficient and effective to eliminate HAT in African community but too costly. Furthermore, the cost-effectiveness of the control measures (education campaign, treatment and insecticides) were determined using incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) approach and the results show that, the use of education and treatment of infected people as the best cost effective strategy compared to other strategies.

THE USE OF ANECDOTES IN TEACHING THE INTRODUCTORY STATISTICS FOR THE PROSPECTIVE TEACHERS

  • Anecdotes can produce an emotional and simple response that decreases stress and anxiety in a classroom. The use of anecdotes in building concepts of statistics can support an effective way of teaching and learning statistics. Particularly, we demonstrate several anecdotes including pictures as the medium of image that are designed to motivate statistical ideas by placing them at the beginning of a lecture and by appealing to prospective teachers weighed down. Our purpose is that under the constructivist view, prospective teachers have an opportunity effectively to teach statistical concepts using humorous anecdotes and to experience significant beliefs on identifying some frequent misconceptions in statistics. At this procedure, the anecdotal teaching practice is concerned with describing and evaluating many humorous anecdotes we have found useful in teaching introductory statistics. We hope that this paper can be helpful to prospective teachers who will teach students such topics as descriptive statistics, sampling, and hypothesis testing.

Minard의 정보맵과 함께 하는 스토리텔링을 이용한 데이터시각화 교육 (Data visualization education using the storytelling with Minard's figurative map)

  • Minard의 정보맵은 1812년 나폴레옹의 러시아침공을 묘사한 정보그래픽스로서 Tufte (1983)가 극찬하였던 그림이다. 이 정보그래픽스를 데이터시각화교육에서 스토리텔링 소재로서 활용할 수 있다. 본 논문에서 Minard의 정보맵을 시작점으로 하여 스토리텔링을 이용한 데이터시각화 교육에 대하여 4개의 주제(정보그래픽스, 정보디자인, Minard, 나폴레옹의 러시아침공)별로 언급하였다.

  • 대학 입학전형은 각 대학의 교육목적에 맞고 그 교육목표를 이룰 수 있는 적합한 인재상에 부합하는 학생들을 선발하는 것에 있다. 그리고 최근 입학사정관제의 도입으로 학생의 잠재력을 발굴하여 선발하는 전형을 정착시키려는 노력을 하고 있다. 이 점에서 과연 다양한 평가방식이 학생들의 질적 특성까지 반영하여 그들의 잠재력이 잘 평가되는지, 또 전형요소에 따라 계열, 모집단위 등의 특성에 맞는 학생들이 제대로 평가되고 있는지에 대하여 통계적 타당성을 검증할 필요성이 있다. 대학학업성취도를 바탕으로 하여 여러 요인들의 영향력을 통계적 방법으로 분석한다.

Appearance-Order-Based Schema Matching

  • Schema matching is widely used in many applications, such as data integration, ontology merging, data warehouse and dataspaces. In this paper, we propose a novel matching technique that is based on the order of attributes appearing in the schema structure of query results. The appearance order embodies the extent of the importance of an attribute for the user examining the query results. The core idea of our approach is to collect statistics about the appearance order of attributes from the query logs, to find correspondences between attributes in the schemas to be matched. As a first step, we employ a matrix to structure the statistics around the appearance order of attributes. Then, two scoring functions are considered to measure the similarity of the collected statistics. Finally, a traditional algorithm is employed to find the mapping with the highest score. Furthermore, our approach can be seen as a complementary member to the family of the existing matchers, and can also be combined with them to obtain more accurate results. We validate our approach with an experimental study, the results of which demonstrate that our approach is effective, and has good performance.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify the factors affecting the chemotherapy medication errors made by new nurses and to use the results as basic data for the development of a chemotherapy medication nursing education program for new nurses. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted with 189 new nurses working at a general hospital and a tertiary general hospital in Korea. The data collection period was from January 11 to February 7, 2021. The data collected during this study were analyzed using the IBM SPSS statistics version 25.0 program. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, independent t-test, ANOVA, and logistic regression analysis. Results: One factor influencing chemotherapy medication errors was new nurses' educational needs (odds ratio=.18, p=.005). As educational needs increased, the probability of making errors in medication was reduced by .18. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop a chemotherapy medication education program tailored to the educational needs of new nurses by considering the education period, method, and content, with a focus on the content with high demand from new nurses.

한국판 통계에 대한 태도 검사(K-SATS) 타당화 (Validation Study of Korean Version of Survey of Attitudes Toward Statistics(K-SATS))

  • 전통적으로 대학에서 개설되는 통계학 강좌의 지향점은 통계적 지식과 기술의 습득 여부에 주된 초점이 맞추어져 있었다. 그러나 최근 연구에서 통계에 대한 태도와 같은 비인지적 요인이 통계학 성취도에 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타나 통계 학습에 대한 긍정적인 태도의 함양이 통계 지식 및 기술의 습득 못지않게 중요한 통계학 강좌의 과제로 부각되었다. 이에 해외에서는 통계에 대한 태도를 측정하는 검사의 개발 및 타당화 연구가 많이 이루어졌으나 국내는 아직 미비한 실정이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 통계에 대한 태도를 가장 타당하게 측정하고 있다고 평가되고 있는 SATS-36(Survey of Attitudes Toward Statistics-36; Schau 등, 1995)을 우리나라 대학생들의 특성에 맞게 수정한 한국판 통계에 대한 태도 검사(K-SATS)를 타당화하고자 하였다. 예비분석 결과 원척도의 6요인이 아닌 흥미, 가치, 인지적 역량, 용이성, 노력의 5요인 구조가 한국 학부생 및 대학원생들에게 적합한 것으로 나타났으며, 본 검사 분석 결과 K-SATS의 신뢰도와 구인타당도가 확인되었다. 또한 K-SATS의 전체 혹은 하위 척도별 점수에서 성별, 강좌 수준, 학위 과정, 전공 계열에 따라 학생들의 통계에 대한 태도에 유의한 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 연구 결과를 토대로 한국판 통계 태도 검사가 추후 연구와 교수방법에 주는 시사점에 대해 논의하였다.
