초등학교 수학에서 자료와 가능성 영역은 통계적 과정에서 요구되는 기초적인 통계적 내용을 학습하여 통계의 기초 소양을 기르는 단원이다. 학생들은 실제 자료에서 정보를 추출하고, 이를 표와 그래프로 정리하여 결론을 통계적으로 추론하며, 합리적인 의사결정을 내리는 과정을 경험한다. 본 연구에서는 '그림그래프에서 추론하기' 과제에 대한 초등학교 5, 6학년 학생들의 통계적 소양을 분석하여 초등학교에서 추론 학습 가능성과 통계적 소양의 관점에서 그림그래프의 교육적 가치를 살펴본다. 학생들의 통계적 사고를 길러주는 것은 통계교육에서 중요한 목표이며, 비형식적인 통계 추론의 경험은 이후 학습할 형식적 통계적 추론에 도움을 줄 수 있다. 따라서 '그림그래프에서 추론하기' 과제에서 나타나는 초등학생들의 통계적 소양에 대한 논의는 학교 통계 교육에 유의미한 시사점을 제시할 것이다.

요즘 우리나라 언론매체, 특히 신문이나 잡지 등에서 정보 전달의 목적으로 수치적 정보를 통계 그래픽스로 처리하여 시각화하는 작업이 부쩍 많아지고 있다. 그러나, 상당한 비율의 통계 그래픽스가 잘못 그려지고, 일반 대중에게 잘못 인식되는 통계적 오용이 발생하고 있다. 우리나라 언론매체 중 신문들을 중심으로 이러한 통계적 오용의 type, 빈도, 이해 당사자들 의식구조 등을 설문조사, 신문 및 잡지조사 등을 통하여 자료를 입수해 정리한다. 또한, 통계적 오용이 일어나는 통계 그래픽스를 가지고 대학생들을 대상으로 오용의 영향 정도를 알 수 있는 측도를 정하여 실험을 실시하고, 분석을 행한다. 통계 그래픽스의 오용별로 오용을 방지하기 위한 통계적 규칙을 제시하고, 이해 당사자들의 의식구조를 개조할 수 있는 제도적 장치에 대한 방안을 제시한다.

This paper presents a novel structural damage detection method with a new damage index based on the statistical moments of dynamic responses of a structure under a random excitation. After a brief introduction to statistical moment theory, the principle of the new method is put forward in terms of a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system. The sensitivity of statistical moment to structural damage is discussed for various types of structural responses and different orders of statistical moment. The formulae for statistical moment-based damage detection are derived. The effect of measurement noise on damage detection is ascertained. The new damage index and the proposed statistical moment-based damage detection method are then extended to multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) systems with resort to the leastsquares method. As numerical studies, the proposed method is applied to both single and multi-story shear buildings. Numerical results show that the fourth-order statistical moment of story drifts is a more sensitive indicator to structural stiffness reduction than the natural frequencies, the second order moment of story drift, and the fourth-order moments of velocity and acceleration responses of the shear building. The fourth-order statistical moment of story drifts can be used to accurately identify both location and severity of structural stiffness reduction of the shear building. Furthermore, a significant advantage of the proposed damage detection method lies in that it is insensitive to measurement noise.

Many companies in Korea are paying close attention to Six Sigma to get better business results. And there are numerous success stories on the use of statistical methods in solving problems, improving processes and cutting costs. However, there are many cases in which statistical methods are misused or inappropriately applied. In this paper, the pitfalls to avoid in using statistical methods are discussed. Also the role of statistics in Six Sigma is examined.

Three primary interests frequently raised by mortgage companies are introduced and the corresponding statistical approaches for the default probability in mortgage companies are examined. Statistical models considered in this paper are time series, logistic regression, decision tree, neural network, and discrete time models. Usage of the models is illustrated using an artificially modified data set and the corresponding models are evaluated in appropriate manners.

In this paper, we define the notion of statistical A-summability for double sequences and find its relation with A-statistical convergence. We apply our new method of summability to prove a Korovkin-type approximation theorem for a function of two variables. Furthermore, through an example, it is shown that our theorem is stronger than classical and statistical cases.

This paper analyzes the statistical and scientific entity-aspect model for statistical and scientific databases(SSDB's). The statistical and scientific entity-aspect model(SEAM) is defined an example of the application of the statistical and scientific entity-aspect model is represented. Finally, the statistical and scientific entity-aspect model as a design tool for SSDB is evaluated and the further research areas are suggested.

Widespread of internet causes rapid changes in many areas of statistics such as statistical computation and education. In this paper the efficient methods for statistical software development on the internet environment are introduced. Also the developed examples about monte-carlo permutation tests for two-way contingency tables using Microsoft COM (Component Obejct Model) technology are presented.

The web is one of the most plentiful sources of images. The web has an immediate need for image processing technology in Java. This paper provides a practical introduction to statistical image processing using Java on the web. The paper describes how images are represented in Java and deals with four image processing operations based on basic statistical methods: point processing, spatial filtering, edge detection and image segmentation.
