This paper describes the development of a thigh wearable robot for power assistance during stair climbing. In the wearable robot developed in this study, high-power BLDC motors and high-capacity harmonic reduction gears are used to effectively assist the thigh muscle during stair climbing. In particular, normal ground and stair are distinguished accurately by using wireless smart shoes, and the stair climbing assistance is performed by activating the actuators at an appropriate time. Impedance of the hip joint was effectively reduced by performing friction compensation of the gears, and a wearing adjustment mechanism was designed to fit the robot to the thigh by conveniently modifying the width and tilting angle of the robot using set collars. Consequently, the performance of the developed thigh wearable robot was verified through stair climbing experiments with EMG measurement.

This paper is about the development of an automatic stair climbing trolley for carrying loads without manpower. The design of tri-wheeled structure and center of mass enable the trolley to move on flat ground and also to ascend stairs by self-balancing. The overall design enables the trolley to avoid collision to walls when the trolley rotates on domestic landings. When the camera recognizes the stair, the sensor measures distance from the trolley to the stair. Then the trolley can move to align itself in the middle of the stair and it starts climbing. It can ascend to a specific floor based on the floor number entered by the user. As a result, the automatic stair climbing trolley is expected to help humans by protecting from accidents of dropping loads and saving their power. It is also expected to use for various purposes such as delivering packages, moving and carrying heavy loads in buildings without elevator.
In this paper, we propose the Autonomous Stair-climbing system based on data from ToF sensors and IMU in developing stair-climbing robots to passive wheelchair users. Autonomous stair-climbing system are controlled by separating the timing of landing gear operation by location and utilizing state machines. To prove the theory, we construct and experiment with standard model stairs. Through an experiment to get the Attack angle, the average error of operating landing gear was 2.19% and the average error of the Attack angle was 2.78%, and the step division and status transition of the autonomous stair-climbing system were verified. As a result, the performance of the proposed techniques will reduce constraints of transportation handicapped.

A new gait detection system using both FSR (force sensing resistor) sensors and a gyrosensor was developed to detect various gait patterns. FSR sensors were put in self-designed shoe insoles and a gyrosensor was attached to the heel of a shoe. An algorithm was also developed to determine eight different gait transitions during four gait phases: heel-strike, foot-flat, heel-off and swing. The developed system was evaluated from nine heathy mans and twelve hemiplegic patients. Healthy volunteers were asked to walk in various gait patterns: level walking, fore-foot walking and stair walking. Only the level walking was performed in hemiplegic patients. The gait detection system was compared with a optical motion analysis system and the outputs of the FSR sensors. In healthy subjects, the developed system detected successfully more than $99\%$ for both level walking and fore-foot walking. For stair walking, the successful detection rate of the system was above$97\%$. In hemiplegic patients, the developed system detected approximately 98% of gait transitions. The developed gait phase detection system will be helpful not only to determine pathological gait phases but also to apply prosthetics, orthotics and functional electrical stimulation for patients with various gait disorders.

In this study, a new gait phase detection system using both FSR(Force Sensing Resister) sensors and a gyrosensor was developed to detect various gait patterns. FSR sensors were put in self-designed shoe insoles and a gyrosensor was attached to the posterior aspect of a shoe. An algorithm was also developed to determine eight different gait transitions among four gait phases: heel-strike, foot-flat, heel-off and swing. The developed system was compared with the conventional gait phase detection system using only FSR sensors in various gait experiments such as level walking, fore-foot walking and stair walking. In fore-foot walking and stair walking, the developed system showed much better accuracy and reliability to detect gait phases. The developed gait phase detection system using both FSR sensors and a gyrosensor will be helpful not only to determine pathological gait phases but to apply prosthetics, orthotics and functional electrical stimulation to patients with gait disorders.

Recently, the advanced development of smart devices has increased the interest in health-care, and many people are paying more attentions to disease prevention than disease treatment. Among these prevention methods, the bare body movement has received much attention, and especially walking exercise is attracting much attention because it is enjoyable without any restrictions on place and time. Walking exercise is generally divided into two types: walking on the ground and climbing the stairs. Walking up the stairs consumes much more calories compared to walking on the ground. These walking exercises have the advantage that they can be easily performed by male and female without special equipments or economic considerations. However, there is a lack of applications and systems that accurately determine such walking and stair walking and measure momentum according to stair walking. In this paper, we designed and implemented a real-time walking status analysis system using smartwatch's, pedometer, smartphone's barometer and beacons.
Moving assistant devices for people who are difficult to move are becoming electric-powered and automated. These moving assistant devices are not suitable for moving stairs at which the height between floor surfaces is different because these devices are designed and manufactured for flatland moving. An electric-powered and automated moving assistant device should change direction or stop when it approaches stairs in a movement direction. If the user or automatic control system does not change direction or stop in time, a moving assistant device can roll over or collide with stairs. In this paper, we propose a stairs detection method by using oblique distance measured by one sensor tilted to flatland. The method proposed in this paper can detect upward or downward stairs by using a difference between a predicted and measured oblique distance in considering a tilted angle of a sensor for measuring an oblique distance and installation height of the sensor on a moving object. Before the device enters a stairs region, if our proposed method provides information about detected stairs to a device's controller, the controller can do adequate action to avoid the accident.

This paper provides the results from evaluating the stiffness of Hi-Form joint by an experiment and the system identification method using the dynamic modal data, and the reasonable modeling method of Hi-Form joint which is proposed for improved stair construction recently. Based on the crack pattern and load-displacement relationship and the damage distribution, it can be judged that Hi-Form joint can't fully transfer the forces between the elements linked, and we propose that the joint is modeled as a element which have a stiffness with 50% decrease.

This paper presents a step length estimation algorithm for Pedestrian Dead Reckoning using linear calibrated ZUPT (zero velocity update) with a foot mounted IMU. The IMU consists of 3 axis accelerometer, gyro and magnetometer. Attitude of IMU is estimated using an inertial navigation algorithm. To increase accuracy of step length estimation algorithm, we propose a stance detection algorithm and an enhanced ZUPT. The enhanced ZUPT calculates firefighter's step length considering velocity error caused by sensor bias during one step. This algorithm also works efficiently at various motions, such as crawling, sideways and stair stepping. Through experiments, the step length estimation performance of the proposed algorithm is verified.
In the view of the fact that mobile robot in nuclear facilities should be able to turn in narrow space, go over obstacles, and climb stairs for the inspection and maintenance, a robot, named as KAEROT, is developed. It adopts 2DWIS (2-Driving Wheels, 1-Steering) and has three planetary wheels that are composed of two star-like arms and three small wheels. The experiments were carried out in two locomotion methods; (1) by controlling the rear wheel speed as a function of steering angle, and (2) by using inclination and stair-detection sensor to control the position of planetary and small wheel. The developed robot moved on the floor with stability. Results from the experiment on the rectangular obstacle as well as the computer simulation showed a feasibility on the stairs.
