The present study provides descriptions of the cellular associations of the seminiferous epithelium cycle in the Crocidura shantungensis. The cycle of the seminiferous epithelium was divided into 14 stages, and developing spermatids were subdivided into 15 steps. The Golgi phase occurs the first two steps, and the cap phase had the next four consecutive steps. The acrosomal and maturation phases were consisted of steps $7\~14$, and the remaining one step consisted the spermiation phase. The Ad type of spermatogonia was observed whole stages, and Ap, In and B spermatogonia were observed from stage II to stage VI. The preleptotene, leptotene and zygotene of primary spermatocytes were observed from VII to XIV stages, and pachytene spermatocyte was observed from I to XII stages. The diplotene spermatocyte was observed XIII stages, and meiotic figures and secondary spermatocytes were observed stage XIV. Our results provide the foundation for a variety of future studies of the spermiogenesis of C. shantungensis.
The purpose of this study was to examine preferential unit planning components of high-rise residential buildings across family life cycle stages. The questionnaire survey was adopted in this study, and 110 cases were used for data analysis. Based on the age of the oldest child, the family life cycles used in the study were divided into four stages: early childhood, elementary school, adolescence, and adulthood. The findings showed that the preference of the unit planning components across the stages was distinct; families in the stage of early childhood and adolescence had the growing needs for spatial features, and regarded living-related features as important. Families in the stage of adulthood tended to have larger spaces. It was noticed that unit planning components needed to be more differential when the combined effect of both family life cycle stages and housing size was considered.
The objective of this study was to evaluate glucosinolate (GSL) profiles and variation of total and individual GSLs concentrations within seedling (0-14 days) and growth stages (0-15 weeks) of Korean Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa L. ssp. pekinensis). Ten GSLs (progoitrin, glucoraphanin, glucoalyssin, gluconapin, glucobrassicanapin, 4-hydroxyglucobrassin, glucobrassicin, 4-methoxyglucobrassicin, neoglucobrassicin and gluconasturtiin) were identified from Korean Chinese cabbage. In general, total GSL content significantly decreased during seedling (from 92.89 to $35.26{\mu}mol{\cdot}g^{-1}$ DW) and g rowth stages ( from 74.11 to $1.97{\mu}mol{\cdot}g^{-1}$ DW). Gluconapin was the highest in seeds and in the germination period ($73.1{\mu}mol{\cdot}g^{-1}$ DW) and declined gradually from 73 to 15% during seedling stages. The level of the major aliphatic GSLs, gluconapin and progoitrin, tended to decrease sharply, whereas levels of indolic GSLs (4-methoxyglucobrassicin, glucobrassicin) and aromatic GSLs (gluconasturtiin) were found to increase generally at the beginning of growth stages.
The immature stages of Nephrotoma virgata Coquillett (Diptera, Tipulidae) are described. Detailed illustrations of the immature stages are provided. It is the first to deal the immature stages of the genus Nephrotoma in Korea.
Chthamalus challengeri Hoek was collected from intertidal rocks to rear the larvae from hatching through nauplius to cyprid in the laboratory. Larval development consists of six nauplius stages and a cyprid. Unilobed labrum with a prominent protuberance and the frontolateral horns folded under the anterior cephalic shield margin are diagnostic features through all nauplius stages. The posterior border of the cephalic shield bears no posterior shield spines in nauplius stages IV-Ⅵ. There is a specific hispid seta in the fourth group of the antennal endopodite. Morphological features such as the cephalic shield, labrum, abdominal process, antennules, antennae and mandibles in all nauplius and cyprid stages are illustrated and described. The numerical setations of the antennule are found to aid in the intraspecific identification of barnacle nauplius stages without dissection. The keys to each stage of the barnacle larvae in Korean coastal waters are provided based on the reared nauplii of seven species: Pollicipes mitella Octomeris sulcata, Chthamalus challengeri, Balanus albicostatus B. trigonus, B. amphitrite, and B. improvisus inhabiting Korean coastal waters.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the features of Korean infants' vocalizations according to the stages models. A total 88 infants, whose ages range from 1 to 18 months, participated in this study. This age is a critical period for vocal development. However, the study of infants' vocalizations has typically focused on children over the age of two. Because of restrictions related to the study of younger infants, from birth to the age of two, it is usually difficult to investigate what are the major features of their vocal development. Therefore, this study provides documentation and analysis of the features of infant vocalization and their vocal development stages. The results shows that the stages model of Oller & Lynch (1992) might be adapted for Korean infants' vocal development. Furthermore, the features of the infants' vocalization are not linearly appeared one stage to the next stage, but are overlapped (Koopmans-van Beinum & van der Stelt, 1986; Nathani et al., 2006; Oller, 1980; Stark, 1980; Vihman, 1996).
This study was undertaken to investigate the interrelationships between the degrees of skeletal maturity of cervical vertebrae and the hand-and-wrist in skeletal Class III malocclusions. In 185 skeletal Class III malocclusions (male 62, female 123) having the lateral cephalogram and hand-wrist radiogram which were taken on the same day, 6 skeletal maturity stages of cervical vertebrae were compared with 11 skeletal maturity indicators of the hand-and-wrist. On the basis of findings of this study, the following results were obtained: 1. The stages of cervical vertebral maturity are one of the methods possible to assess the individual maturity. 2. Mean ages of male and female were obtained in each cervical vertebral stage. 3. Cervical vertebral stages 1 and 2 are considered to the accelerative growth phase, cervical vertebral stages 3 and 4 are corresponded to the peak height velocity, and cervical vertebral stages 5 and 6 were observed to occur during the decelerative phase of growth after peak height velocity in both sexes. 4. In cervical vertebral stages 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, the degrees of skeletal maturity of cervical vertebrae in males were more retarded than females. 5. There was the high correlation between the degrees of skeletal maturity of cervical vertebrae and hand-and-wrist.
Background: To identify the prevalence of different stages of smoking and differences in associated risk factors. Materials and Methods: Thos longitudinal study started in February 2011 and the subjects were 2552 form one students aged between twelve to thirteen years of from 15 government secondary schools of Kinta, Perak. Data on demographic, parental, school and peer factors were collected using a self-administered questionnaire. We examined the effects of peer, school and parental factors on the five stages of smoking; never smokers, susceptible never smokers, experimenters, current smokers and ex-smokers, at baseline. Results: In the sample, 19.3% were susceptible never smokers, 5.5% were current smokers 6% were experimenters and 3.1% were ex-smokers. Gender, ethnicity, best friends' smoking status, high peer pressure, higher number of relatives who smoked and parental monitoring were found to be associated with smoking stages. Presence of parent-teen conflict was only associated with susceptible never smokers and experimenters whereas absence of home discussion on smoking hazards was associated with susceptible never smokers and current smokers. Conclusions: We identified variations in the factors associated with the different stages of smoking. Our results highlight that anti-smoking strategies should be tailored according to the different smoking stages.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify factors associated with the stages of change in medication adherence in patients with hypertension. Methods: Participants were 323 patients with hypertension. Sociodemographic/medication-related characteristics, stages of change, processes of change, self efficacy and decisional balance were self-administered. Results: Stages of change were significantly different according to gender, age, job and living arrangement. A multinominal logistic regression analysis has revealed that gender, age, living arrangement, self-liberation, and self-efficacy were significantly associated with the precontemplation stage. Age and self-liberation were significantly associated with the contemplation stage. Gender, age, living arrangement, and self-liberation were significantly associated with the preparation stage. Gender and helping relationship were significantly associated with the action stage. This model explained 52.0% of the stages of change in medication adherence. Conclusion: The tailored intervention strategies based on the stages of change may be needed for improving medication adherence in patients with hypertension.
The structure and dynamics of Korean red pine stands established in the riparian zone were studied in the Tsang stream in Mt. Seorak National Park, in east-central Korea. Pine stands were classified into four successional stages, the initial, establishing, competitive, and stabilizing stages, based on the age distribution of a dominant tree, Pinus densiflora, the vegetation stratification, and the microtopography of the riverine environment. The stages usually corresponded to disturbance frequencies, depending on the horizontal and vertical distances from the watercourse. Stands of the initial and establishing stages lacked tree or subtree layers, or both. As stands progressed through the developmental stages, soil particle size became finer and moisture retention capacity was improved. The stand ordination reflected the developmental stage, and the species ordination differentiated species specializing in relatively dry and wet habitats. The results of the analysis of vegetation dynamics provided ecological information which will be useful for understanding the developmental processes of vegetation established in riparian zones. Species diversity indices usually increased across developmental stages, following the typical pattern for successional processes. We discuss the importance and necessity of riparian vegetation in Korea, where most riparian forests have disappeared due to excessive human land use.
