  • Hollow fiber membrane using CTA polymers were prepared by the phase separation method for the separation and purification of biogas and the hollow fiber gas separation membrane modules with the effective surface area of 0.17 $m^2$ were prepared. The pure gas permeation properties of membrane modules for methane, oxygen and carbon dioxide were measured. The permeance of $CO_2$ and $CH_4$were 0.46 GPU and 18.52 GPU, respectively, therefore, the high $CO_2$/$CH_4$ selectivity of 40.4 was obtained. The separation and purification test for 4 different simulated mixed gases were carried out after the pure gas test and the gas concentration and flux of the permeate at the various stage-cut were measured from the 1 stage, 2 stage, and 3 stage cascade of membrane modules. In the 1 stage test, the concentration of $CH_4$ increased as the increase of the stage-cut, while the $CH_4$ recovery efficiency ratio decreased. In the 2 stage test, the $CH_4$ recovery efficiency ratio increased compared to the 1 stage. The 3 stage test was employed to reduce the loss of $CH_4$ in biogas and the result showed less than 5% of $CH_4$ recovery loss.

  • This study was carried out to find the plant succession stage on highway cut-slopes. In order to analyze succession stage, plant survey with belt transect method was carried out in 1989 and 1995 at Joongbu-highway cut-slopes. The results could be summarized as follows ; The mean plant coverage of cut-slope was 78.3%. Plant coverage of Lower part area was higher than that of upper part area. Pioneer herb species on cut-slope were Miscanthus spp., Arundinella spp., Artemisia spp. etc., and pioneer woody species were Rubus crataegifolius, Robinia pseudoacacia, Pueraria thunbergiana, Pinus spp. etc. Also, among the introduced turf grasses, Eragrostis curvula is the pioneer species. Due to short of maintenance works, Zoysia japonica which has been planted by sodding work was found to decrease or diminish gradually. The ratio of pioneer stage plants, domestic and introduced herb species, seems to decrease, while the ratio of woody species which are advanced stage plants seems to increase. Maintenance works are needed to management and monitoring of plant succession on cut-slope, and use of herb and woody species will be effective.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of shipping temperature and harvesting stage on the quality and vase life of cut flower in standard chrysanthemum 'Baekma' for export. Cut flowers harvested at flowering stage 4 were stored for 24 hours at $5^{\circ}C$, and then quality and vase life were evaluated after simulated shipping for 48 hours at 5, 20, and $35^{\circ}C$. In addition, cut flowers harvested in flowering stage 1 to stage 6 were evaluated after simulated shipping for 72 hours at $5^{\circ}C$. As shipping temperature increased, $CO_2$ concentration inside the box rapidly increased, and $O_2$ concentration greatly decreased. The vase life of cut flowers was extended by 3 days and chlorophyll content of leaves, fresh weight, solution uptake, and flower diameter were better maintained in $5^{\circ}C$ shipping than in 20 or $35^{\circ}C$ shipping. The vase life of cut flowers harvested at flowering stage 1 or 2 was extended by 5.2 or 5.5 days compared to those harvested at flowering stage 6, more 6. The fresh weight was lower and flower diameter was smaller by 1.3 or 2.5 cm in cut flowers of flowering stages 1 through 3 than flowering stages 4 through 6. In addition, the cut flowers of flowering stages 4 through 6 showed higher solution uptake than those of flowering stages 1 through 3. These results suggest that shipping at $5^{\circ}C$ of cut flowers harvested at flowering stage 4 is preferential for promoting vase life and quality of cut flower in standard chrysanthemum 'Baekma' for export to Japan.

  • Two varieties of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L cv. Pioneer and Beaver) and timothy (Phleum pratense L cv. Climax and Joliette), grown at different locations in Saskatchewan (Canada), were cut at three stages [1=one week before commercial cut (early bud for alfalfa; joint for timothy); 2=at commercial cut (late bud for alfalfa; pre-bloom head for timothy); 3=one week after commercial cut (early bloom for alfalfa; full head for timothy)]. The energy values of forages were determined using three approaches, including chemical (NRC 2001 formula) and biological approaches (standard in vitro and in situ assay). The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of forage variety and stage of maturity on energy values under the climate conditions of western Canada, and to investigate relationship between chemical (NRC 2001 formula) approach and biological approaches (in vitro and in situ assay) on prediction of energy values. The results showed that, in general, forage species (alfalfa vs. timothy) and cutting stage had profound impacts, but the varieties within each species (Pioneer vs. Beaver in alfalfa; Climax vs. Joliette in timothy) had minimal effects on energy values. As forage maturity increased, the energy contents behaved in a quadratic fashion, increasing at stage 2 and then significantly decreasing at stage 3. However, the prediction methods-chemical approach (NRC 2001 formula) and biological approaches (in vitro and in situ assay) had great influences on energy values. The highest predicted energy values were found by using the in situ approach, the lowest prediction value by using the NRC 2001 formula, and the intermediate values by the in vitro approach. The in situ results may be most accurate because it is closest to simulate animal condition. The energy values measured by biological approaches are not predictable by the chemical approach in this study, indicating that a refinement is needed in accurately predicting energy values.

  • We prepared composite membrane which was made with polysulfone supported hollow fiber membrane coated with Hyflon AD to eliminate $CO_2$ gas from mixed-gases which were generated in DME manufacturing processes. The performance of module about simulated flaring gas was measured by using manufactured composite membrane. 1-stage evaluation result shows $CO_2$ concentration was below 3% at 1.2 MPa and at Stage cut 0.24 above. In addition $CO_2$ removal rate and $CH_4$ recovery rate was 80% respectively at the same condition. 2-stage evaluation result shows, when the $CO_2$ concentration of product gas was fixed at 5%, recycled $CO_2$ at stage cut 0.074 had the same concentration as the feed gas and the recovery rate of $CH_4$ was 99% at the moment.

  • Aim: To evaluate the relationship between pre-operative CA-125 levels and myometrial invasion in patients with early-stage endometrioid-type endometrial cancer. Materials and Methods: Two-hundred and sixty patients were diagnosed with endometrial cancer between January 2007 and December 2012. Of these, 136 patients with stage 1 endometrioid histologic-type and documented pre-operative serum CA-125 levels were included in the study. Age, preoperative CA-125 level, histologic grade, surgical grade, and presence of deep myometrial invasion were recorded. Additionally, 16, 20, and 35 IU/ml cutoff values were used and compared to evaluate the relationship between pre-operative CA-125 levels and myometrial invasion. Results: The average serum CA-125 level was $35.4{\pm}36.7$ in patients with deep myometrial invasion, and $21.5{\pm}35.8$ in cases without deep myometrial invasion. The relationship between the presence of deep myometrial invasion and CA-125 cut-off values (16, 20, 35 IU/ml) was statistically significant, although the correlation was weak (p<0.05). When the relationship between 16, 20 and 35 IU/ml CA-125 cut-off values and the presence of deep myometrial invasion was studied, specifity and sensitivity values were identified as: 0.60-0.68 for 16 IU/ml; 0.73-0.48 for 20 IU/ml; and 0.89-0.33 for 35 IU/ml. The sensitivity of 16 IU/ml cut-off value was higher when compared to other values. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that preoperative serum CA-125 values maybe used as a predictive test in patients with early stage endometrioid-type endometrium cancer, and as a prognostic factor alone. Further studies should be conducted to identify different CA-125 cut-off values in patients with low risk endometrial cancer.

  • This study was conducted to develop the regulating methods for the optimal harvest stage of new sprout for woody plants, and to clarify the effects of storage condition and period on the growth of new sprout formed of Aralia elata cv. 'Jeongkwang'. Japanese angelica tree were collected in the Jangheung district of Jeonnam on 20. March, 2005, and those cut branches were stored at $5{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ and 80 to 90% of the relative humidity, and were cut in water. Survival rate of cut branches for Aralia elata cv. 'Jeongkwang' was significantly increased when that was used for the cutting after the collection with no storage. And those survival rate was much more increased when that was stored at 80 to 90% of relative humidity than 40 to 50% of relative humidity. Number of new sprouts formed which were not stored immediately after the collection 3.2 to 3.4, and that were stored at cold storage room before cutting and cut on 1. June and 1. August were 5.1 to 5.3. Leaf growth of cut branches cut in water on 20. March started at ten days after cutting, and that on 1. June and 1. August at one to two days after cutting. Slow and mature sprout growth of Aralia elata cv. 'Jeongkwang' which were cut in water were different by the cold storage periods. Nineteen days were needed for the mature growth of sprout when cut in water on 20. March, and thirteen days on 1. August.

  • Poly(ether imide) (PEI)-poly(dimethylsioxane) (PDMS) composite membranes and their modules were prepared, which are capable of selective $CO_2$ separation from the mixture gas. The gas flow rate, concentration, recovery ratio of $H_2$ and removal ratio of $CO_2$ outflowing by stage-cut were characterized at $25^{\circ}C$ and the constant pressure. In addition, to increase the recovery ratio of $H_2$, one stage, two stage series connection, and three stages series + parallel connection tests were carried out. When the stage-cut was 0.32 for the three stages connection operation, the concentration $H_2$ of the produced gas and the recovery ratio of $H_2$ was 97% and 85%, respectively. And also the removal ratio of $CO_2$ was 90% was obtained and the recycled gas concentration was similar with that of the feed gases.

  • A collection efficiency of cyclone is influenced by cut-size and slope of grade efficiency curve. It has been recognized that the collection efficiency is improved when the cut-size is reduced. However, effects of the slope have never been studied so far. In this study, we analyze a relationship between slope of grade efficiency and collection efficiency in two-stage cyclones. In single stage cyclones, higher slope cyclones have high efficiency. On the contrary to single stage cyclone, collection efficiency of two-stage cyclone have the maximum value when the first cyclone has a lower slope and second cyclone is high.

  • A two-stage slit type virtual impactor based on the concept of the single stage virtual impactor has been designed, fabricated, and evaluated for the purpose of concentrating the suspended particles in the air with the size range of 1.8-4.5 .mu.m and handling large flow volume. Monodisperse methylene blue particles have been generated with vibrating orifice aerosol generator (VOAG). The separation efficiency and concentration efficiency have been measured by the UV-visible absorption spectrometry. Previous study for a single stage virtual impactor were used to determine the design parameters such as 50% cut-off sizes and dimensions of the two stage virtual impactor. The separation efficiency curve and 50% cut-off Stokes number(cut-off sizes) are not sensitive to the nozzle Reynolds number, but sensitive to the ratio between the minor flow rate and the total flow rate, The measured concentration efficiency was compared with the maximum concentration efficiency determined by the separation efficiencies of the first and the second stages. The differences between the measured and the maximum concentration efficiencies result from the wall loss due to the deposited particles on the internal walls inside the impactor.
