This paper addresses the method for the shape design sensitivity analysis of the buckling load in the continuous elastic body. The sensitivity formula for critical load is analytically derived and expressed in terms of shape variation, based on the continuum formulation of the stability problem. Though the buckling problem is more efficiently solved by the structural elements such as beam and shell, the elastic solids are considered in this paper because the solid elements can be used in general for any kind of structures whether they are thick or thin. The initial stress and buckling analysis is carried out by the commercial analysis code ANSYS. The sensitivity is computed by using the mathematical package MATLAB using the results of ANSYS. Several problems including straight and curved beams under compressive load, ring under pressure load, thin-walled section and bottle shaped column are chosen to illustrate the efficiency of the presented method.
This study presents algorithms for determining the fuzzy critical loads of planar steel frame structures with fixity factors of beam - column and column - base connections are modeled as triangular fuzzy numbers. The finite element method with linear elastic semi-rigid connection and Response Surface Method (RSM) in mathematical statistic are applied for problems with symmetric triangular fuzzy numbers. The ${\alpha}$ - level optimization using the Differential Evolution (DE) involving integrated finite element modeling is proposed to apply for problems with any triangular fuzzy numbers. The advantage of the proposed methodologies is demonstrated through some example problems relating to for the twenty - story, four - bay planar steel frames.
The maximum ductility and cumulative ductility of connection joints of Buckling-Restrained Braced Frames (BRBF) are critical to the structural overall performance, which should be matched with the BRB ductility. The two-story and one-span BRBF with a one-third scale was tested under cyclic quasi-static loading, and the top-flange beam splice (TFBS) rotational connections were proposed and adopted in BRBF. The deformation capacity of TFBS connections was observed during the test, and the relationship between structural global ductility and local connection ductility was studied. The rotational capacity of the beam-column connections and the stability performance of the BRBs are highly relevant to the structural overall performance. The hysteretic curves of BRBF are stable and full under large displacement demand imposed up to 2% story drift, and energy is dissipated as the large plastic deformation developed in the structural components. The BRBs acted as fuses and yielded first, and the cumulative plastic ductility (CPD) of BRBs is 972.6 of the second floor and 439.7 of the first floor, indicating the excellent energy dissipation capacity of BRBs. Structural members with good local ductility ensure the large global ductility of BRBF. The ductile capacity and hysteretic behavior of BRBF with TFBS connections were compared with those of BRBF with Reduced Beam Section (RBS) connections in terms of the experimental results.

This paper presents a design technique of steel structures subjected to static and dynamic loadings using practical nonlinear inelastic analysis software. The beam-column approach using the stability functions and the plastic hinge concept enables the software to suitably predict second-order effects and inelastic behavior of beam-columns. For dynamic analysis. the incremental from of the equation of motion is solved by the use of a step-by-step numerical integration procedure in which the assumption of constant acceleration over a small time step is employed. The accuracy of the analysis program is validated using the results of ABAQUS program and experimental tests. A user-friendly graphic interface of the software is developed to facilitate the modeling process and result interpretation of the problem. A design example of large span bridge is presented to detail the direct design process using the practical advanced analysis software.
The nonlinear behavior of a connection has an influence on the behavior (the $P-\Delta$ effect) and the stability of a steel unbraced frame when a semi-rigid connection is applied as a beam-to-column connection. Therefore, the effects of a connection's non-linear behavior on the behavior and stability of a steel unbraced frame were investigated using second-order inelastic analysis, after which the main influence factors and their behavioral tendencies were studied. The study results showed that the nonlinear behavior of a connection directly affects the stability of a steel unbraced frame, and that the main influence factors are the rotational stiffness of the connection and the location of a semi-rigid connection.

This paper studies on dynamic and stability behavior of a clamped-elastically restrained nanobeam under the action of a nonconservative force with an emphasis on the influence of surface properties on divergence and flutter instability. Using the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory incorporating surface effects, a governing equation for a clamped-elastically restrained nanobeam is derived according to Hamilton's principle. The characteristic equation is obtained explicitly and the force-frequency interaction curves are displayed to show the influence of the surface effects, spring stiffness of the elastic restraint end on critical loads including divergence and flutter loads. Divergence and flutter instability transition is analyzed. Euler buckling and stability of Beck's column are some special cases of the present at macroscale.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the stability of tapered columns with general boundary condition(translational and rotational elastic support) at one end and carrying a tip mass of rotatory inertia with translational elastic support at the other end. The column model is based on the classical Bernoulli-Euler beam theory which neglects the effects of rotatory inertia and shear deformation. The governing differential equation for the free vibrations of linearly tapered columns subjected to a subtangential follower force is solved numerically using the corresponding boundary conditions. And the bisection method is used to calculate the critical divergence/flutter load. After having verified the results of the present study, the frequency and critical divergence/flutter load are presented as functions of various nondimensional system parameters.
During an earthquake, soils filter and send out the shaking to the building and simultaneously it has the role of bearing the building vibrations and transmitting them back to the ground. In other words, the ground and the building interact with each other. Hence, soil-structure interaction (SSI) is a key parameter that affects the performance of buildings during the earthquakes and is worth to be taken into consideration. Columns are one of the most crucial elements in RC buildings that play an important role in stability of the building and must be able to dissipate energy under seismic loads. Recent earthquakes showed that formation of plastic hinges in columns is still possible as a result of strong ground motion, despite the application of strong column-weak beam concept, as recommended by various design codes. Energy is dissipated through the plastic deformation of specific zones at the end of a member without affecting the rest of the structure. The formation of a plastic hinge in an RC column in regions that experience inelastic actions depends on the column details as well as soil-structure interaction (SSI). In this paper, 854 different scenarios have been analyzed by inelastic time-history analyses to predict the nonlinear behavior of RC columns considering soil-structure interaction (SSI). The effects of axial load, height over depth ratio, main period of soil and structure as well as different characteristics of earthquakes, are evaluated analytically by finite element methods and the results are compared with corresponding experimental data. Findings from this study provide a simple expression to estimate plastic hinge length of RC columns including soil-structure interaction.

An analytical procedure is presented for the determination of the buckling load and the buckling temperature of a straight, slender, geometrically perfect, axially loaded, translationally and rotationally restrained steel column exposed to fire. The exact kinematical equations of the column are considered, but the shear strain is neglected. The linearized stability theory is employed in the buckling analysis. Behaviour of steel at the elevated temperature is assumed in accordance with the European standard EC 3. Theoretical findings are applied in the parametric analysis of restrained columns. It is found that the buckling length factor decreases with temperature and depends both on the material model and stiffnesses of rotational and translational restraints. This is in disagreement with the buckling length for intermediate storeys of braced frames proposed by EC 3, where it is assumed to be temperature independent. The present analysis indicates that this is a reasonable approximation only for rather stiff rotational springs.

For a shear-deformable beam-column element subjected io non-conservative forces, equations of motion and a finite element formulation are presented applying extended Hamilton's principle. The influence of non-conservative force's direction parameter, internal and external damping forces, and shear deformation and rotary inertia effects on divergence and flutter loads of Beck's columns are intensively investigated based on element stiffness, damping and mass matrixes derived for the non-conservative system.
