Biocompatible Hydroxy apatite (HAp) coatings on metallic substrate by plasma spray techniques have been developed. Long-term credibility of plasma spray HAp coatings has been evaluated in physiological saline by electrochemical measurements. It was found that the corrosion resisitance of SUS316L based HAp/Ti conbined coatings was excellent even after more than 10 weeks long-term immersion. It was shown that postal heat treatment improved both the crystallinity and corrosion resistance of HAp. By lowering cooling rate during heat treatment process, less cracks produced in HAp coating layer, which lead to higher credibility of HAp during immersion in physiological saline. The ICP results showed that the dissolution level of substrate metallic ions was low and HAp coatings produced in this research can be acceptable as biocompatible materials. Also, the concentration of dissolved ions from HAp coatings with postal heat treatment was lower compared to those from samples without postal heat treatment. The adherence of HAp coatings with Ti substrate and other mechanical properties were also assessed by three-point bending test. The poor adhesion of HAp coating to titanium substrate can be improved by introducing a plasma spray titanium intermediate layer.
Dense $BaMgAl_{10}O_{17}:Eu^{2+}$ phosphor particles with a spherical shape have been synthesized through spray pyrolysis method using basic aluminum nitrate precursor as a spray solution. This $BaMgAl_{10}O_{17}:Eu^{2+}$ particles prepared by the spray pyrolysis have shown the stronger emission intensity compared to the commercially-available $BaMgAl_{10}O_{17}:Eu^{2+}$. However, thermal stability of the BAM:Eu b lue phosphor is very poor due to changing from $Eu^{2+}$ to $Eu^{3+}$ at the thermal process, so brightness of the phosphor decreases. To improve the thermal stability of the dense BAM:Eu phosphor, the spherical BAM:Eu particles were coated with pure $BaMgAl_{10}O_{17}$ layer using the hydrolysis reaction in a solution system. The synthesized powders were characterized by XRD, SEM and PL. On the other hand, the emission properties of the BAM:Eu phosphors coated with $BaMgAl_{10}O_{17}$ layer before and after thermal treatment at $500^{\circ}C$ for 30 min were estimated under VUV excitation. The brightness of the coated phosphor was higher than that of the uncoated phosphor. Also, the coating thickness of BAM layer in the BAM:Eu particles was optimized.

A Cu-15Ag-5P filler metal (BCuP-5) is fabricated on a Ag substrate using a high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) thermal spray process, followed by post-heat treatment (300℃ for 1 h and 400℃ for 1 h) of the HVOF coating layers to control its microstructure and mechanical properties. Additionally, the microstructure and mechanical properties are evaluated according to the post-heat treatment conditions. The porosity of the heat-treated coating layers are significantly reduced to less than half those of the as-sprayed coating layer, and the pore shape changes to a spherical shape. The constituent phases of the coating layers are Cu, Ag, and Cu-Ag-Cu3P eutectic, which is identical to the initial powder feedstock. A more uniform microstructure is obtained as the heat-treatment temperature increases. The hardness of the coating layer is 154.6 Hv (as-sprayed), 161.2 Hv (300℃ for 1 h), and 167.0 Hv (400℃ for 1 h), which increases with increasing heat-treatment temperature, and is 2.35 times higher than that of the conventional cast alloy. As a result of the pull-out test, loss or separation of the coating layer rarely occurs in the heat-treated coating layer.
Cold spray deposition using Titanium powder was carried out to investigate the effects of powder morphology and powder preheating on the coating properties such as porosity and hardness. The in-flight particle velocity of Ti powder in cold spray process was directly measured using the PIV (particle image velocimetry) equipment. Two types of powders (spherical and irregular ones) were used to manufacture cold sprayed coating layer. The results showed that the irregular morphology particle appeared higher in-flight particle velocity than that of the spherical one under the same process condition. The coating layer using irregular morphology powder represented lower porosity level and higher hardness. Two different preheating conditions (no preheating and preheating at $500^{\circ}C$) were used in the process of cold spraying. The porosity decreased and the hardness increased by conducting preheating at $500^{\circ}C$. It was found that the coating properties using different preheating conditions were dependent not on the particle velocity but on the deformation temperature of particle. The deposition mechanism of particles in cold spray process was also discussed based on the experimental results of in flight-particle velocity.

Chemical mechanical polishing(CMP) process is widely used for global planarization of inter-metal dielectric (IMD) layer and inter-layer dielectric (ILD) for deep sub-micron technology. However, as the IMD and ILD layer gets thinner, defects such as micro-scratch lead to severe circuit failure, which affect yield. In this paper, for the improvement of CMP process, deionized water (DIW) pressure, purified $N_2 \; (PN_2)$ gas, slurry filter and high spray bar were installed. Our experimental results show that DIW pressure and $PN_2$ gas factors were not related with removal rate, but edge hot-spot of patterned wafer had a serious relation. Also, the filter installation in CMP polisher could reduce defects after CMP process, it is shown that slurry filter plays an important role in determining consumable pad lifetime. The filter lifetime is dominated by the defects. However, the slurry filter is impossible to prevent defect-causing particles perfectly. Thus, we suggest that it is necessary to install the high spray bar of de-ionized water (DIW) with high pressure, to overcome the weak-point of slurry filter. Finally, we could expect the improvements of throughput, yield and stability in the ULSI fabrication process.

The thermal barrier coating (TBC) for inner wall of liquid-fuel rocket combustor consists of NiCrAlY as bonding layer and $ZrO_2$ as a top layer. In most case, the plasma spray coating is used for TBC process and this process has inherent possibility of cracking due to large difference in thermal expansion coefficients among bonding layer, top layer and metal substrate. In this paper, we suggest crack-free TBC process by using a precise electrodeposition technique. Electrodeposited Ni-P/Cr double layer has similar thermal expansion coefficient to the Cu alloy substrate resulting in superior thermal barrier performance and high temperature oxidation resistance. We studied the effects of phosphorous concentrations (2.12 wt%, 6.97 wt%, and 10.53 wt%) on the annealing behavior ($750^{\circ}C$) of Ni-P samples and Cr double layered electrodeposits. Annealing temperature was simulated by combustion test condition. Also, we conducted SEM/EDS and XRD analysis for Ni-P/Cr samples. The results showed that the band layers between Ni-P and Cr are Ni and Cr, and has no formed with heat treatment. These band layers were solid solution of Cr and Ni which is formed by interdiffusion of both alloy elements. In addition, the P was not found in it. The thickness of band layer was increased with increasing annealing time. We expected that the band layer can improve the adhesion between Cr and Ni-P.

Cold gas dynamic spray is a relatively new coating process by which coatings can be produced without significant heating during the process. Cold gas dynamic spray is conducted by powder sprayed by supersonic gas jet, and generally called the kinetic spray or cold-spray. Cold-spray was developed in Russia in the early 1980s to overcome the defect of thermal spray method. Its low process temperature can minimize thermal stress and also reduce the deformation of the substrate. Most researches on cold-spray have focused on micro scale coating, but our research team tried to apply this method to macro scale deposition. The macro scale deposition causes deformation of a thin substrate which is usually convex to the deposited side. In this research, the main cause of the deformation was investigated using 6061-T6 aluminum alloy and properties of deposited aluminum layer such as coefficient of thermal expansion, Elastic modulus, hardness, electric conductivity were measured. From the result of the analysis, it was concluded that compressive residual stress was the main reason of substrate deformation while CTE had little effect.
In this work, the effect of applied load on the wear behavior of Al/SiC composites was studied. Al/SiC composites were fabricated following the thermal spray process. Dry sliding wear tests were performed on these composites under four different applied loads, i.e., 5, 10, 15, and 20 N. The wear behaviors of the composites under these applied loads were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Under applied loads of up to 15 N, the wear rates of Al/SiC composites decreased with an increase in the applied load because of the formation of an adhesion layer on the worn surface. However in the case of an applied load of 20 N, the wear rate was significantly high because the formation and fracture of the adhesion layer were repeated continuously. These results show that the wear behaviors of the tested composites are significantly influenced owing to the applied loads.
The present study aims to investigate the flow characteristics with respect to fuel type and equivalence ratio in the flame spray coating process. The flame spray flow is characterized by much complex phenomena including combustion, turbulent flows, and combined heat transfer. The present study numerically simulated the flam spray process and examined the gas dynamics involving combustion, gas temperature and velocity distributions in flame spray process by using commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code of FLUENT (ver. 13.0). In particular, we studied the effect of fuel type and equivalence ratio on thermal and flow characteristics which could substantially affect the coating performance. From the results, it was found that the gas temperature distributions were varied with different fuels because of reaction times were different according to the fuel type. The equivalence ratio also could change the spatial flame distribution and the characteristics of coated layer on the substrate.
